New fee structure

Of those proposals, the only ones which I would choose to support are

* Udating the forum software to a more modern platform

* investment with Audi and other partners to preserve long term availability of spare parts

For my two penn'orth, socials, merchandise and so on should be self-funding.

I think its a good idea to have a dash template but not the badges Steve. Have you seen the classic "only fools and horses" when Rodders becomes a member of the "groovy gang". Hopefully verbal exchanges and getting to know one another will reveal our true identities, ta.

Interesting and welcome views. Some narrative and explanation on this might be helpful as the admin team held mixed views on this too.

Firstly merchandising will be self funding if we progress the idea. That is any initial investment will be recouped through a dividend from sales. Till now this was voluntary work carried out by Ben, WoolyA2 and Skipton but there was a lot of work and hidden out of pocket expenses involved. The new concept will be to work through a third party intermediary for any items apart from the club badges. Thus removing the handling issues and retaining the copyright to the club logo.

The social aspect of the forum goes from strength to strength with 30 ish attendees at each event made up of stalwart and new members. That's only a small percentage of the 250 or so people who have donated funds to the club but the social aspect to the forum is our link to other clubs at ADI and AITP and is important for us in that context. We all benefit from the social reports and photo galleries plus the shared knowledge and information that makes its way onto the forum through networking at the socials.

Mike and Vonnie do an amazing and sometimes thankless task as social secretaries with much time and their own money invested in researching locations, venues for meals and providing food at the socials. It'd estimated they spend 50 quid of their own cash on food and drinks for each event and have done for several years now.

To be self funding there would need to be a fee for socials or a charge for the hospitality. We'd also need to finance upkeep and replacement of the gazebos and advertising banners by charging people to attend. It doesn't seem fair all round - and even if you don't and will never attend a social I'd argue that we all benefit from this aspect of the forum for reasons already given.

A final note, would there be objection to us running an annual campaign for a charitable donation - say at Christmas time with members proposing a worthy recipient for some money? We thought this to be very much in keeping with the fraternal nature of A2OC but any opposing views is healthy and correct to assure we get it right.

A definite yes to charity campaigns.
After al, donations would be voluntary.

It is good to feel that as a club we are also supporting good causes.

On the subject of name badges, ok I can see that people might see this as a bit too "childish" (for want of a better word).

I do think that it is great that we are reviewing the options and improvements, it is a fantastic club at the moment and making it even better without losing the current "feel" is to be applauded.

I am sure that there are members (including me) that would be happy to help if we can.

Cheers

I think the point around maintaining spare parts availability from Audi is the most important one for A2 owners going forward, otherwise the community will serve only to be a conduit for breaking cars for parts and overseeing the A2's eventual decline.

I'm more than happy to make another annual donation to keep funds going.

Merchandise is always fun but it's difficult to manage as everyone wants something different and get the quality right whilst keeping costs low - but nice to do if it can be done. E.g. A2OC floor mats :)

I do wonder whether the A2 Forum should actually start to become a "preservation" society in some way - we see a lot of A2s getting written off, broken and killed these days. Should the Forum be attempting to rescue and restore/ save/ preserve some examples now? There are enough people on the forum with the expertise?

PS I would like to attend the occasional social, but those which have taken place when I have been free to attend have been too far away for my comfort. I appreciate that some people will travel from one end of the country to the other, and that I have benefitted from the knowledge accrued by these stalwarts.

I'm comfortable with the idea of using funds in the forum kitty as seed funding for merchandise.

I'm not a fan of adding to the forum kitty to make charitable donations: I prefer to make my own choice about giving and am not influenced by chuggers:).

For clarity annual charity donations if supported would come from existing funds. There would be no additional request for donations.

I had to Google the term 'chugger'.

I am all for charitable giving, its an essential part of society but I already give what I can to my chosen charities, I think donations made to date to the club should be used to the benefit of the club.

Perhaps there could be an annual charity sponsored by the club where people could chose to donate to that charity if they so wish using an icon on the forum.

Hi Steve

Our proposal for charity donations was influenced by a couple of our members loosing their fight against motor neurones and cancer. Initial thoughts of just supporting these specific good causes developed into the idea of giving members the opportunity of nominating other deserving charities. In a way it would be a 'feel good' thing for the Club to participate in but any small donations made would never be at the expense of A2 car related activities.

I do however think your idea of a 'charity icon' is an excellent alternative so lets see what the consensus is among our members

Cheers Spike

Im terribly sorry to hear that, it was before my time on the forum.

In May 2013 it was John Saunders (tourangang) who lost a brave battle against MND. A real gent of the forum and all round good guy.

Before my time in 2007 I think we lost Hollyrescue ( Dick Chown) to cancer. The pages commenting on his passing in the archives are very emotional. He was a part owner of the site and his share passed onto his son Peter ( Chownie) who still owns his dad's A2 and is online occasionally.

We'd thought as well of naming potential annual awards after these guys. A way to preserve the history of the club and celebrate its future too.

So there's the background to the idea. Or maybe we are just sentimental old chuggers! :p

Naming annual awards like that is very respectful and a great thing to do.

I think that a club that gives to charity (however that is done) is something that just seems right ?

Hi Steve i'm(read we) are working on a downloadable template for members to pop on the dash of their A2 at socials with their details and car spec. Should have it for the first socials this year. cheers mike and vonnie

My only concern of this is that with Steves spec his whole windscreen would be covered :)

But seriously this is a great idea.

Something like this for shows, would be easier to identify each other.

In the nicest of ways - we probably are 'nerdy' for having such devotion for these wee aluminium gems and the forum which celebrates them. Just look at some of the comments we receive on other motoring forums.

Cutting around a social with name tags on will fortify that stereotype completely!

Shaking hands and talking works just as well. Plus what about a roll call for a photo to break the ice. Ladies and gentlemen - stand by your motors. (then you'll add faces to usernames)

Bump to keep this a fresh thread for anyone logging in and promote discussion. See #27 onwards.

I knew this thread would follow several lines of discussion and rightly so, therefore for the 2 weeks it's being kept live I will draw attention back to the purpose of the review and invite comment on the funding model. If there are no particular views people feel strongly about to post on here - we would like to encourage as many of you as possible to take part in the poll at the end of next week. This will be closed and anonymous and a good turnout will assure we move forward reflecting the views of a proportional segment of our active community.

Maybe it's me missing something but this thread does not seem to appear in the list of current posts on the home page. The only way I spotted it was when clicking on 'new posts' - which I don't often do.

Could be that many members have not seen this discussion for the same reason.

Cheers Spike

No you're right Spike. I think it's because it's on an older announcement thread and i believe they have a time bar on their place on the home page. I'll ask Ben if he can sort it.
