That’s what used in mine 😂😂😂😂
Hi Neil,

Yep that’s the very same batch of screws in your current tailgate Sir.

Should be easy to remove when the time comes as I don’t recall actually replacing the bulbs since purchasing this A2.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hello all,

Some of you might be able to guess what I’ve been up to this afternoon/evening judging by the pictures on the a Today I… thread.

The long version of the story is that the A8 D2 wheels that’s I fitted earlier in this thread were a little tired looking so had them powder coated but the finish has tarnished very quickly. I’ll be taking them back to the refurbishment centre in the coming days to see what can be done to improve the finish. In the below picture if you look in the centre first you’ll see what they’re meant to look like. Moving out to what’s on show you’ll see that the finish is quite dark and almost grey:

IMG_8851.jpeg

I’ll show a comparison of the aesthetics further down. Also the centre caps that came with the wheels are well past their best and have been DIY refurbished very badly (not by me I must add) and have been on the hunt for a new set for many months. I was extremely lucky a couple of months ago when someone on eBay was selling a NOS set of centre caps that he purchased for his A8 as spares some 20 years ago. Only this afternoon were they finally removed from the factory packaging. Here’s what’s been fitted for months:

Here’s the NOS items:

IMG_8848.jpeg

I’m sure you’ll agree, there is a massive difference. The first set are ready for file 13 as I have another decent set that came with the recently delivered (by Rick @Rickmeister) wheels.

This set that I picked up from Rick (thank you so much Sir) over the festive period had fresh rubber an hour ago and also fitted the NOS centre cap shown above. Here they are fitted:

In the flesh the aesthetics really are night and day.

Here’s the car again with 2 on the powered coated wheels loose, sure you’ll see how different the colour is:

As these powder coated wheels have rubber with less than 500 miles on them, they will be refinished and make their way onto a certain Azure Blue A2.

Kind regards,

Tom

Looking good @2work

I did they look great in grey, especially against the Jaipur Tom.
But then I do have grey alloys on my Brilliant Red A4.

Hello all,

Some of you may well have seen the latest addition to this stunning A2 on the Today I… thread.

For those of you who haven’t then let me take you back a week or 2. Remember me tinkering with instrument clusters:

A6 C5
IMG_8764.jpeg

A3 8L
IMG_8765.jpeg

Borrowed bits from each to upgrade the A2 cluster. Here are the scales in the standard red LCD cluster before I have worked out how to embed it to read correctly by adjusting the hexadecimal data:

All sorted now so finally have the above white scales in the 3DcolorMFD instrument cluster:

I think this is a glorious ending to this cluster experiment/venture. You can probably imagine the size of the grin on my face right now. I’ll add some pictures later on when the ambient light drops to show how nice the backlit numbering is at dusk. Nothing to show when dark to be honest as the white scales simply look like standard black scales when the ambient light has dissipated.

Kind regards,

Tom

I think it looks great.
With the hand on your hart; how about readability and contrast vs std?
Did you have any use of the A3 8L cluster?
Edited: mistyped A3 8L as S3 8L

Evening Joakim,

I’ll go for a short drive in the next hour or 2 to see how it is at night. Think it’ll be fine though as it’s been in the other Audi’s in the past.

I do have the S3 cluster with the RPM scales that go up to 8k just like the FSI. I’ve also got the C5 Quattro KPH scales which go up to 260 kpm. Both scales are of course in white and wound be spot on for a FSI over in Europe.

Do you have a FSI Sir.

Kind regards,

Tom

I am not man enough for a FSI, haha. My hands are full occupied with work on my 1.4 petrols and 1.2TDI s.

Hello again Joakim,

Follow up as promised:

Been out for a short drive and can confirm that the white scales are spot on in the dark. To be honest they look that same as the standard black scales at night as the white isn’t noticeable until you pass underneath a street light.

I’d say this is a great way of having factory white scales which can be much cheaper than going for the aftermarket custom K-Tec solution which is around £100-£120. The necessary instrument clusters with these scales can be quite expensive as there are some on eBay right now for £100 each but can also be as cheap as £30-£50 each if you keep looking and pounce on a bargain when it presents itself.

I’m extremely happy with what I have now as the cluster looms magnificent. Just need another set of white scales for the Azure Blue Project OEM A2; I’ll keep looking out for a bargain as I’ll certainly not be paying more than necessary so happy to wait until such a bargain steps forward.

Kind regards,

Tom

Morning all,

Whilst feeling guilty neglecting this stunning A2 over the weekend, working on its sibling, I thought it right to give it a little treat. So went ahead and purchased a Whiteline Rear Anti Roll Bar from Awesome GTI:

IMG_8917.jpeg

I’m sure someone mentioned that these can go down to the region of £150 throughout the year but didn’t want to wait.

I would have preferred the H&R equivalent as its appearance looks better but know this Whiteline version is just as good. The problem with the H&R offerings is that the only sell the front by itself. To get the rear you have to purchase both front and rear. Right now I don’t feel the beefier front anti roll bar is required.

So here is the purchase which will be here in a few days:

IMG_8916.jpeg

As I’ll be removing the strut bolt again I think I might’ve well replace the rear shocks at the same time. This will then be a complete rear suspension rebuild to see it hold the road perfectly for the next few years.

I’ll add a few pictures when it arrives and is fitted.

Kind regards,

Tom

Congrats Tom on what to my eyes is the only white dial conversion on any dashboard I’ve ever seen that looks tasteful and a genuine anesthetic improvement over standard!

Morning David,

Yes it’s really quite nice and extremely happy with what I’m presented with when I enter the cabin. The addition of the custom car image in the centre of the cluster just adds even more tasteful aesthetics.

The best part of this upgrade is that the white scales are genuine from an Audi instrument cluster.

Just need to source another set for the OEMA2 now.

Kind regards,

Tom

These look really great, as does the car!

All you need now is to retrofit a towbar and air suspension, and you have every light on the dash functional ;)
Evening,

Indeed you’re correct. I might well add a towbar at some point but think air suspension might be a bit excessive. The very same can be said for all other A2s as they have the same icons within the instrument cluster, you may not have noticed them before though due to the dark colour of the factory scales.

Kind regards,

Tom

Very nice job Tom. Would look very good in Smurf, if you fancy sorting an FSI console?

Morning Bob,

If you was able to source the appropriate instrument cluster then I’d gladly swap the scales over for you Sir.

The instrument cluster you’re seeking is:

8L0920980Q

There are a few on eBay but a little pricey compared to what I paid a few months ago:

IMG_8945.png

As you’ve helped me out in the past by getting me out of a pickle post the demise of my Ebony Black BBY by letting your certain Azure Blue A2 go, then I’m happy to swap the scales over for you all for the cost of turning up with the biscuits if you were to be passing by.

Happy to continue the conversation of WhatsApp Sir. Be good to see you after such a long time.

Kind regards,

Tom
