Project FSI Gold

I have a few boot tools available, and 3x black roller blinds for the boot...
Number plates are easily available off e-bay for very little money and no paperwork required(I didn't tell you that)
Radio code can also be obtained from e-bay, remove the stereo and get the AUZ code off the side of the radio, then send it through to the seller, they will return the code in about 10mins £6 from memory
City Wheels are brilliant, worth every penny.
I'm sure there are members on here that will help you out with spares and techy stuff, nice to see that someone is giving it the attention it deserves.
Andy

Thanks Steve and Andy. I will follow up with you both shortly , may want to get a few items and consolidate postage if poss. Trying very hard to control my costs at the moment. Great to hear the endorsement of City Wheels.

A few more bits for my list

The plastic cover over the tailgate catch/ lock at the very bottom of door - currently missing
jacking hole cover in sill rear near and off sides
Offside bonnet mounting socket ( is that what its called ) which sits atop the wing...
black plastic scuttle - the bits either side on the wing are broken
Fuse lid cover
Is there a spring or rubber bush anything to align the gearlever - seems very unsprung when compared to other A2s

Its amazing how many bits I missed in the excitement of acquiring this A2.

What colour interior is it? I have a soul black fuse cover, and the 'boats' that the bonnet sits in too. Double check that thescuttle bits you are talking about is not just the design of the scuttle, they have a funny little cut out that some folk think is broken, but that is actually the design.
I also have jacking point covers here too for the ns.

Thanks Andy, I need to get a complete list of what I need and then come to you and Steve to see what you have available . Its a Twist interior trim, but the dash is black, but lower is twist.. boot sides is soul black, so i presume load cover should be black ?

Argh, my fuse cover is black, but I do have 3x load covers in soul, so all is not lost at this point, more than happy to work with Steve on the bits you need.

After a vacuum, wipe down, still need a few more cleans and the rug doctor, but looking a lot better, and feeling like a nicer place to be

Morning Neil,

Looking good in there Sir. You’ll be surprised how many years of dirty the Rug doctor with remove on a single pass. Try to loosen the sounded areas first with a shampoo product before hand. I recall the sickening colour of the water after attacking a certain Dolphin Grey TDI a few years ago.

Good luck with this one as I think it’s a great car in the making. Very jealous!

Kind regards,

Tom

Changed Coolant cap for a new one as I had a brand new one already... confirmed coolant level, run for a while, no noticeable change in coolant level and all looks dry around the bottle and visible pipework/ unions. Need to try and get a camera to look behind the engine... Too soon to jump to any conclusions .... not overheating, running fine, no oil water mix or water/ oil mix and cannot see any obvious leak.... will need to monitor .

today I also removed all four wheels from the car, checked discs and pads, and general underbody. All looked good including the front arms... drop links. Jacking points and sills all undamaged . There was some surface rust on the front arms and rear beam. Any thoughts on what would be good to offer a little extra corrosion protection, hammerite , lanoguard or ??? Whilst underneath I also had another good look for any obvious signs of coolant ... thankfully still havent found anything. No oil leaks also. something I wasnt expecting

Now standing on a set of the 15" A2 Alloys, not the best but decent tyres and will do while I get on with refurbs, cleaning . I'll have to make the trip to City Wheels for the refurb, nothing local is anywhere near cost effective , what to do with the centre caps, look genuine , the outer piece appears crimped onto the centre, wondering if I can rewrap these as they dont look like they will clean up... and finally need to decide what new tyres i should fit? Currently on Contis, and budget mix . All worn, starting to perish so need replacing.

Forgive me if I missed it, but have you scanned it yet?
An FSI needs a scan

Bilt Hamber products are favoured over on the Mk1 TT Forum, where there's a lot less aluminium than here!
Mac.

No I havent scanned it with VCDS / VCDS Lite , I have a thinkcar Max2 scanner. Using that it came back with a clean bill of health, only issues were with alarm being triggered, radio, which was off at the time , no other dtcs , on my other FSI which had EML issues it did flag many more DTCs . I had already ordered an ebay vag com cable to get me started , hopefully when this arrives ... its overdue I can do a scan and post .

I'll have a look at Bilt Hamber . thanks for the pointer

Yes you can just strip the shiny ring off the wheel centres. They're the same grey underneath as the centre section.

Will give that a go tomorrow, and see how they look
Seems to be a metal chrome crimped and folded over the edge ...doesnt easily want to come off, without seemingly destroying the cap.... may need to revisit ... Weather is terrible at moment . Not a day to work on the car :( .

I think I did one with a pair of long-nosed pliers and a flat-bladed screwdriver. Just be careful not to gouge the underneath surface on the front side. For corroded rings it's the only real solution without an awful lot of careful work.

Seems too easy to damage the face of the cap when removing the metal. Just wondering if I can sand the corrosion back to clean metal now and then rewrap or paint ? Might try this before trying to pull the cap apart. Either way I need to do something to make them presentable. Seems like copies are available reasonably priced as these things are priced on ebay
