Rear ARB now fitted to an A2

good call Dan, now I'm having doubt because I have lots of those trapezoid shaped speed humps that you could ride over them. In the case of the narrow A2, riding dead centre over them and still catching the edges of the 'slope'. The ARB may catch it...

80mm clearance ain't very much. Luckily I don't do that kind of thing, I tend to have problems with snow and that's different.

humps: go measure one, aren't they all similar?

That's what I'm thinking about too - there are hundreds of those darned trapezioid shaped bumps around my way, and with the A2's narrow track you can't quite clear the bump on both sides but I'd worry that the seeming low clearance of the two droplinks would risk fouling?
Perhaps the owners who have installed them so far can clarify?

Folk, sorry for not getting round to doing pictures.
Let me clear something up, speedbumps (including trapezoid) are not a problem. I have lots in Leeds near me and for the last week I have been bouncing off them at every angle to test out the FSD dampers. Not a single metalic sound.

ok, so you're a happy bunny. Hmm. FSDs are deliverable from Awesome, no? Meh, I wanted B6s, but if they're not available and the FSDs *and* an ARB can come at the same time... me wants :D

All I have to do now is convince the wife.....

I want slightly stiffer and sharper handling, would I still notice a good difference in handling with my standard suspension? has anyone fitted this without upgraded suspension I'm very close to buying one and I might not change my suspension if this gives me what I'm looking for:)

You could fit the ARB first and then if you're still after more you could then do the springs/ shocks later? The ARB would be a significantly cheaper first step than the full suspension re-do...

So many upgrades to do, such a limited budget, argh! ARB or 5th gear mod?

Scott, I have the rear arb and will be fitting when weather permits to my SE spec A2. I have as factory suspension so could let you know feedback when done if you haven't already decided to go ahead first..!

Thank you that would be helpful. Would be good to no if its worth getting without a suspension upgrade, hope it is, for both of us

Don't forget that this rear ARB has 3 different "stiffness" settings, via 3 different mounting points to the suspension "arm".
So indeed, this may suit a standard "soft" suspension, and a sport "stiff" suspension aswell.

Yes thats the nice thing about Whiteline bars the adjustable stiffness allows you to alter the characteristics to suit your set up and your driving style. I had one on my S2 and remember settling on the medium. Hard was a bit too twitchy and soft didnt remove enough understeer but medium was the Goldilocks.

Hi Malcom/ other Whiteline users
Was wondering how you were getting on with the Whiteline RARB. Do you still feel it's a transformational mod to the car's handling? Have you tried going up to the medium, or even "hard core" settings on the bar or have you kept it on "soft"?

I called Awesome today (about something else) and very nearly ordered one, but the price with VAT and delivery is now almost £150 so I held off, just felt I needed some more persuading of its merits!

Well its all a matter of opinion. If you enjoy spirited driving and feel you would like better turn in into corners and more grip out of corners the rear ARB is great.

I have used it on a 1.4 petrol which has an all alloy engine and it could be said the handing was very good already. Even I have enjoyed the improvements the ARB has given.

I would like to point out that in a TDI you have a heavy cast iron engine block which will put a greater dent into the cars handling. I would say the ARB should be top of your shopping list if you are the sort of person that truely enjoys driving. The adjustabilities of the ARB just means you can have it to your taste, and its easy to adjust.

Just read all the feed back. They're Great!!!

I have mine on the medium setting since fitted. At the same time I had the weitec and FSD's fitted, so I can't comment on the ARB in isolation.
However as a package, the ride is amazing. Not stupidly sporty (ie uncomfortable), but corners and handles fantastically with virtually zero body roll.

bringing this back from the dead: was there any paperwork with the bar? There's one on the German forum who might be interested, but without TÜV paperwork, it's a €1000 job.
Can someone fill me in?

Bret

I didn't get any paperwork with mine.
It was fitted by Awsome when they did a load of other work (wietecs, FSD, cambelt and front ARB in sept 2009).
I didn'y get any of the guff that might have come in the box with the rear ARB.
Nearly a year on and the A2 with the new suspension continues to make me grin.

Well fitted this at the weekend and this is a great mod finally got the chance today to give it a little bit of a push and i'm very impressed, in is also set to the medium as i couldn't get the bolt through the soft hole (may be it was fate) but not to harsh at all, i got it on discount from the show last weekend, so i'm glad i didn't rush out straight away

Just need to cut down the bolts now should get that done in the morning

Cheers Phil

I agree this is a very good mod and have left mine on the intermediate setting. having just spent 2 weeks driving a (not so) 'Smart' car round Italy getting back in the A2 today was a revelation....
