Temperature gauge woes

A bad stat will kill fuel consumption as the car fuels as if its at cold start the whole time. Same thing happened to me.

I've just bought a 2002 1.4 TDi, and the temp gauge was steady at 80c (no jumping back and forth). It was a 90 mile drive at 12c outside.

Could this be the sender?

A few years ago I had an A4 which had a similar problem, in that case it was the thermostat itself.

Ok, i have just had mine changed and the car seems much less lumpy and noisy when cold so i think it has done the trick!

Does anyone have the part numbers for the stat and the other part mentioned. I'm getting quite high consumption at the moment and prob should replace these parts just in case.

Thanks.

An update on this - the Torque app reports a coolant temperature of 73c (via a bluetooth ELM317 OBDII reader).

Seems odd that the dial temp is 80 but the reported temp is 73, when the target is 90, will be interesting to see what the two report when the thermostat/sender get changed.

I'm getting around 68mpg which I guess is adequate, doesn't show too much damage from the temp problem. Bizarrely Torque shows an mpg of around 20mpg, so I don't know how seriously I should take the other torque figures...

If Torque is showing 20mpg you need to change some of the settings! Have you told it the engine size and fuel type?

I've told it 1.4 litres, but I can't see where the fuel type is set. This is the freebie version of Torque.

Just got back from a 200 miles trip in our 1.6 FSI A2 - During the trip I noticed the temp gauge reading zero, then 90, then zero, then 90 - It was flicking rapidly from one to the other, every 30 seconds or so.

Having read this thread, it seems it could be the thermostat although my symptoms dont seem quite the same as other people's.

I have the same symptoms on 2001 tdi - sometimes reads 90 sometimes 60 and readings in between at random.

Based on advice, went for sensor replacement 1st.

I had a black 2 pin sensor (269415 06-01) and following a lot of searching and 3 visits to Audi dealer worked out that the listed replacement part 059 919 501A (4pin) is an upgrade. This wouldn't fit straight on however owing to incompatible 2 existing connector 1J0 973 702. After a lot of hassle, I worked out you also need new connector 4B0 973 712 and wire 000 979 131 plus shrink wrap. You cut off the old connector and use the wire to solder connect. I connected the other to pins numbered 1 (white/grey wire) & 2 (green/grey wire) on the 4 pin connector. Hope this helps anyone on the same route.

However! … on testing, the gauge still sometimes reads 90 sometimes 60 and readings in between at random.

I am now therefore considering replacing the thermostat as it seems both items give the same symptoms when they play up.

Thanks for posting this. It looks like my car also has the old 2 wire sensor :(

Thought I'd post in an existing thread instead of starting a new one

Just noticed last night in the drive home from work that as I parked up, my temperature gauge said 0... Instantly knew something wasn't right. On the drive into work today noticed that if I was sat in traffic it would be about 60, once I hit the carriage way it would drop to 30 or even 0!

Now, from this thread I'm guessing a good place to start is the temperature sensor? If so, does anyone have part number for it so I can add it to my nice Audi shopping list? It can go underneath the check strap which went on Monday! God that's a horrible noise every time I open and shut the drivers door!

I have a 2001 SE and it must be that time where everything stops working. The amount of little things I've had to replace recently! I won't even mention the clunks I hear from the rear whenever going over bumps

Afternoon everyone,
Ive had tbe temperature gauge woes at 100k miles or thereabouts. It reads about 82 ish and wont go higher i began to suspect it was affectibg my mpg too.
Ive read a few threads and changed the temp sensor a couple of years ago when it really was going dicky.
This was fine until earlier this year when i noticed that it was stuck at 82.
I read what dan b said about thermostat and so changed that and the sensor ( again) this week, both from ECP. Now, having been for a good twenty minute blast around, it still reads 82 ish and I'm stumped. Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Hi.

No thermostat fault will cause the temperature to switch significantly as you have indicated. That is either a faulty sender of a loose connection on the sender.

Totally agree with Steve. Also seem to recall a few club members experiencing early failures of non-genuine temp sensors.

Only fit a genuine VW/Audi green Temperature Sender. Don't save a few pounds by fitting a none genuine part. Do also buy two temp sender retaining clips as there is a very good chance that you will drop one down the back of the engine!

Also fit a new Genuine Thermostat and O-ring. It can be done without removing the Alternator but it is fiddly. I used a Halfords ratchet spanner into which I put a small Torx key held in place with self-amalgamating electrical tape on either side. This still allowed the ratchet to function. It only had a single click of movement but enough to remove and tighten the bolts that hold the composition pipe that houses the Thermostat.
My gauge has maintained an indicated 90 degrees ever since.

Change your antifreeze too if you do not know its age.......again only use VW/audi G12 Plus, Plus Plus or G13.

Thanks mariafel
That bottom bolt is a member of the b'stard family. I have a bit of weepage from it so i willtake the alternator off to make sure its on right enough. Shouldve replaced it last year when i did the alt pulley!
£21 for thermo from audi,
£4 frm ecp after a lot if pratting about
Did lose the clip had to get two more. I knew about the thread trick but you always think you can do it, well at least i do then whoops! Its gone

Thanks Spike. Without this post I would've struggled. Just replaced mine, the part costs £39 now with washer and clip. Not the hardest of jobs I've done. I'm on my lunch hour and it hailed and rained at times. Which was nice!

Forgive me if I have missed something but I can't see a picture.

I'm having to do this for the second time and am having a senior moment.

Cheers
