Webasto

Hi Jupis
Have you considered fitting a Webasto diesel fired coolant heater as used on early TDi's. It works very well and can be fitted with a pre heat controller so the car is warmed up before setting off.
The coolant temp sensors on the A2 are on the water outlet side of the engine and probably won't pick up much heat until coolant starts flowing to the radiator. In addition, I'm sure the ECU checks intake air as well as coolant temps so cold starting should not be affected
Sorry I have no experience of the Defa unit

Cheers Spike

Yes I have the normal webasto without a timer. I have been considering the option of adding the timer but I think for me the electric unit would be more suitable for pre heating because most probably I have electricity easily available anyway. I need to check the price for the unit though.

I wish they would have built an electric heater as powerful as webasto so I could use it for interior heating in the same way as webasto :p But that's just a dream!

... termini?

Anyways, I'm also thinking about this. Looks like the A2 will be the sole car soon. I'd like a Webasto too, in addition to the defa block heater I already have. I'll add a charger to the system and a second battery, so that the Webasto and the hifi run off the second battery, along with a true split charge system.
I'll have to try and find a 140A alternator upgrade (they seem to be rare as hen's teeth) to charge this little lot on the go. It's essentially for the once-twice a week when we need it in winter rather than anything serious, but if I can do this for a small number...

With my previous car I had the problem charger was insufficient for audio + computer system I had running. I had to buy a larger one after the old blew on a sunny summer day :D After that upgrade everything was fine.

Where have you planned to place the "entertainment+comfort" battery?

good question. I think either next to the present battery - and then adding the amps on a false floor is going to be the way to go. OTOH, if I can find an Odyssey, maybe that would fit directly behind the present battery, which would be cool... need to find some of those 175A connectors then, though.

I've installed it and it works just fine. The engine starts beautifully in any temperature and you never need to wait for the glow plugs to heat up.

Now that the summer is coming I'm thinking about engine heaters :) The electrical defa heater for 1.4 TDI's is 411761 (http://www.defa.com/finn_dok_h.php3?merke=AUDI&modell=A2&type=2&lang=3&ndid=) so it seems to me this is a coolant heater not an engine block as for petrol model.

Has somebody installed this product? I guess it circulates the coolant by itself, please correct me if I'm wrong. I heard from my friend that for some cars the heater can cause engine not to start due to temperature sensor being too close to the heater. Does somebody know if there is a risk like this in case of A2?
