What clutch and gearbox problems for 1.2 TDI?

Well Kermit has an issue - eeek

It would appear if I stick it in the STOP section on the gear lever, the hydro pump will not activate as readily as it should - ie it won't!! So leaves you in the parked gear (reverse I think it is) stranded. However disconnect the battery for a wee while & it might fire the pump up or maybe not or just sit & wait until does if your lucky.

I think the problem might be a pressure switch in the hydro system as you can hear the pump/solenoid buzzing very slightly when you would expect the pump to be going off.

Doing the diagnosis thing I get 4-5 gear changes so that side of it is ok it appears, I will have a look at the parks/top switch as well

Bit of an update

The hydro system appears fine, however the clutch slave is what appears to be causing the issue. The buzzing at the pump is dependent on the clutch position/cable adjustment. If its buzzing it wont start.

I'm assuming the clutch slave has a pressure or position sensor???? any ideas

The buzzing is quite normal - it's just the clutch cylinder operating. Does the engine start if the you put the lever into neutral? If so, you probably need a gearbox/clutch basic setting. When was basic setting last done? Should be every 30,000km. You'll need VCDS if you've not already got. Essential for a 1.2Tdi.

Is there a guide or how to for the basic setting?
I looked at ELSA and the procedure looked quite tricky with the adjustment of the nut on the cable and the question of just how to get at the cable.
I guess my car could use a basic setting as it had an issue or two with finding reverse lately.

Instructions in Elsawin or on Ross Tech website (instructions only). You probably need both.

The nuts on the end of the clutch cable are easy to adjust but not very accessible. Things wear out more if you don't do basic settings at the recommended intervals.

With mine I just go not know if/when it was done. I had a 60,000km service done when I bought the car but have no idea if they did the clutch settings when they did this.
I will look again at ELSA and work out where the nut is.

It will do no harm whatsoever to do the basic setting early. When I bought my Lupo 3L new and had it serviced at VW agents before the warranty expired, there is absolutely no evidence that any basic settings were ever done, which is the main reason why I now do almost all my own servicing and probably also the reason why I'm writing this!

Is the basic setting easier as an indoor job?
I am thinking through where to go and how to prepare.

Remove the cover underneath the engine (to adjust gearbox linkage) and put at least one side at the front on an axle stand (use the A2 jack and place the stand(s) under the jacking point(s)), so that you can do the creep setting safely. You'll also need to connect a charger whilst doing the setting to keep the volts above 12. Inside or outside if there is enough room for the former and you can run the engine for the creep setting etc.
