My A2 "Top spec" project (AKA my Holy Grail)

Hi Steve
Here's a picture of a rear axle that 100% came of an FSI so you can see any differences.

Hi Tony

thanks for that. The guy has just given me the VIN and I checked and that relates to a 1.6 FSI.

The holes in the centrefold the cross piece seemed to relate to a piece that was effectively a shaped plate of lead. Not visible on any TDI I have seen and so I thought it must be a FSI related part (I guess it was some kind of vibration damping function.
the "before" picture (all brown and mucky) was just a library picture he used in the advert. The picture taken after the powder coating is of the actual axle.

i am hoping to get more info from my mechanic tonight. Oh and he mentioned that the ABS sensors don't fit and the disc dust plates don't fit either!!!

It gets stranger by the minute.

Surely there's a part number stamped on the axle somewhere to check?
It might be a 1.6FSi, but from another car in the VAG range?!

My A2 "Top spec" project (AKA my Holy Grail)

And you are more than welcome to check out our 90. But it sounds like you have enough to sort out...

hi steve looking on line at axle images i say the axle you have is NEW GENUINE AUDI A3 8L VW GOLF MK4 POLO 6R LEON rearaxlebeam.jpg

i hope you get it sorted soon-to be honest it sounds like all the new parts you have will be correct once you get an A2 disc axle.

Yes that is identical, I can even see the three holes where the lead weight would be bolted on, as in the axle I have just bought and yes, the fact that the parts are not wrong is a relief at least!!

I feel like the guy in hospital when he doctor said "I have some bad news and some good news"
"The bad news is that we amputated the wrong leg"
I asked what the good news was
"the leg we should have amputated is getting better!"

That sums up how I feel about the good news that the parts should now fit.
But you have to smile and take it on the chin !!!

Anyone want a zinc coated and powder coated A3/ Polo/ Golf rear axle!!!

An update,

I managed to track down a FSI rear axle that was advertised by a member (Zaphodbb) on eBay (thanks).

It was the one from Hilary's car, so now it will be a significant part on "the Project"!!

I have dropped it of at my mechanic, it was in good condition and so I will not be getting it blasted, just power washed and painted.

I now have every other part that goes onto the axle sitting in boxes all brand new (every part even down to brake pipe clips (even the little cross head countersunk screw on that retains the disc).

So when it is done it should last as long as the rest of the car. It seems that the rear axle has the most ferrous metal on the A2 and so with this sorted, the car should last longer than I will.

It won't be done in time for the meal (of course) but it will be good to get this final part of the project finally completed.

I now have the other axle to get rid of (all zinc plated and powder coated) If anyone thinks they could use it they can have it. It looks like it is one from another VAG car (Polo etc.) or it might just be as the seller has stated, the later A2 version that was fitted as a replacement part as late as 2008, who knows.

I had already bought a complete set of discs and pads for the front and rear, or I would have snapped them up !!

Made some changes to the headlamps.

Removed the DRL's (they looked like fairy tree lights and individual LEDs had started to fail).

Removed the ballast resistor from the Bi-Xenons (after it melted its wat out of the headlamp!)
Ruined the "Chrome paint" around the Xenins and so I have temporarily removed them.
Fitted the surrounds that came with my "Joey" headlamps I bought from a member on here, they are painted black and I wasn't sure at first but they seem to suit the Black and White theme, so they are likely to stay.

They came with the Alu Badges on them and again, I wasn't sure if I should leave them on or not, but I kinda like them.

They look far better on your car than they did on mine Steve. They are painted in plasti-cote which is pretty heat resistant so it shouldn't flake.

Cheers, Steve.

I think they will be staying!!

I plan on painting the actual light surrounds all black (I haven't used yours yet)

The problem I had with the surrounds was that I couldn't find a way to split them from the lenses and so the lenses had to be masked hence they were OK but not 100%.

Yes, they are virtually one unit (even though they are two separate pieces, so a bit of careful masking is required.

Steve, I wonder if I could see a photo of your headlights in day-time running and also at night? I am considering the possibility of a pair of "angel-eyes" in each headlight? Am I correct in assuming that you've fully removed your flexible DRL's? I thought that you were keeping them just for the indicator function?

Yes, I removed the flexible DRL's they were just not bright enough and started to fail.

I just kept the controller so that the replacement DRL's still switched off on the side that the indicator was illuminated.

I have tried taking pictures but it doesn't work, the night time ones just look like a blob of light in any pictures and the daytime ones don't show much.

Steve B

The problem of twin "Angel eyes" is that the main beam is not a complete circle.

This is a shot of the DRLs I just removed, showing the problem if you want twin angel eyes.
