Today I.....

Not very impressive these days and nowhere near the 200k club, but for this car (literally pulled from a hedge) a little milestone passed today……
Just think - most cars are on their last legs by this mileage, whereas a well looked-after A2 TDi is good for that again - and then some!

Yesterday evening another 165 miles to Calne near Chippenham and then on to Maidenhead were dispatched in the usual efficient order by Audrey with my baby daughter in the back.

I was pressing on in atrocious rainstorm conditions past Swindon, but I’m glad to say the car was rock steady at 75mph - I was glad for the new genuine Audi wiper blade, the new Philips RacingVision +200 headlamp bulbs and the Michelin CrossClimate 2 tyres - especially when I was one of the first motorists to happen across an accident on the M4 as soon as it had happened - A speeding Mercedes had acquaplaned and crashed into the side of a lorry - yet I felt as safe as I would driving any modern car sensibly.

Once again, I am reminded that I almost bought a 2017/18 Skoda Fabia estate for £12k - I’ve spent not far off that on Audrey now, but as insane as that sounds, I’m happy with my choice as the part of me that needs some kind of classic car that I can tinker with is satisfied - yet the side of me that knows I just need a reliable and modern car I can rely on is also satisfied- I’ve never had just one vehicle that met both criteria before!

Audrey is now on 153k miles and I’m looking forward to the next 150k miles over the next 20 years…

Hi

I bought one of these 17mm hex bits for a 1.4 AUA. Same size for drain and top up although I refilled via the reverse light switch as it is more accessible on the AUA

I have no experience with diesels so hopefully someone else will confirm

Hi, today I've tried to change the transmission oil, but looks like the hex bit socket doesn't fit at all, neither the shape or size for my 1.4 petrol.
I've checked the diagram and that should be the drain plug on the picture, on the other side bit higher the fill plug, both look identical.
I couldn't even see any bolts underneath that remotly looks like the hex socket.
Am I looking at the wrong bolts?

I did read something about some having this spline type fitted. Replacements are supplied as hex these days. I added some location pics on this thread

It looks like you have the right location it’s just this alternative spline type. I have no idea what size that will be.

That concludes the oil hasn't been changed for 20 years then, I'll keep the hex anyway, fortunately fits my wrench. Cheers

The bolt type you have requires an M16 Security XYN-Spline socket (hopefully).

Here's an eBay link to the appropriate key to undo the bolts:

I've been searching for this info, thanks a lot!

Mine was pretty black and only about 1.4l came out, so original oil I think and probably never topped up. Luckily no sign of water. I refilled via the reverse light switch at the front of the engine ( shown in pics )

Did 200 miles yesterday evening from Maidenhead to reading, then to Moreton-in-the-Marsh and onto home in Devon. Then my grandmother passed during the night so back the 145 miles to Maidenhead this morning - a pleasant drive that I’ve done many times, but this time was notable for two reasons:

1) I achieved a PB of 70.2mpg according to CDIS at the usual 65-70mph speed. I think this tank average is going to be a PB also as you can see from my tracker:

2) I saw two other A2s, one silver TDI75 on the M3, we travelled in convoy for several miles until I lost him on the M25 and his passenger gave me a broad smile so I assume they are enthusiasts; the other was I think a Merlot or Castle red one with Votex kit on the A4 near Dorney / Burnham. Both looked nice.

I also tried the “3rd gear into the red” turbo cleaning routine on the A303 coming up one of the steeper hills and I couldn’t even spot a whisp of smoke in the rear view, so I assume Audrey’s diet of Millers additive on anything less than Shell or BP is keeping things clean.

Sorry to hear of the passing of your grandmother.

These are really good but on Bose cars they are such a faff to get out from their storage holder (in the drivers footwell, under the carpet), that I tend not to use mine.

I need a method of securing it in the boot under the false floor that straps it down tight there instead so I can get at it without fuss. Any ideas?!

What about using hook and loop (Velcro) strips?

@dj_efk
The Velcro will certainly work. It is how the oil bottle is secured inside the boot. The inflator would then fit nicely under the false floor either to the left or right of the battery access panel on the edge. It would be secure and not obstruct access to the battery either. Other alternative is to place it under the elasticated luggage net.
