Today I.....

Update to this - I've found my slim telescoping magnet but with half an hour of very blind poking around I only once managed to snag the bolt onto the end - only for it to get stuck between the engine mount and the belt upon withdrawal and fall down into the lower cam cover somewhere on top of the belt on its lower run (I think)....

I'll study a diagram of the cambelt's path and try again but really the engine mount is in the way so I can't see anything down there.

Something like this might help.
Phone endoscope

If you’re doing it blind I think you’d be very luck to get it out. I did this and decided to take the cambelt cover off. When I found the bolt I don’t think I could have recovered it with a magnet, it had fallen down past the centreline of the crank pulley. An endoscope as suggested above might let you see where it is and that would help a lot. Good luck, I hope you get it out!

How do you get the cover off George? Looks like the engine mount needs to come off?

Upper cover is easy, the lower cover requires the vibration damper to be removed to give access to at least one of the bolts on the lower cover. This can be done through the wheel arch and from below. If that does not let the cover come off then the mount would need to be removed.

Just found this photo from THIS post which is really useful.

Yes I took the engine mount off, if your bolt is above the damper pulley you might be lucky and get it out from the top. I’d be sticking an endoscope in and having a look

Yes it had gone behind the belt bottom pulley itself and the bend in the tool allowed me to poke it far enough past it in order to get at it.

Time seemed to stand still as I carefully and slowly retracted the magnet to get it out!

My A2 had the timing belt set changed on Monday, I even left the car there overnight to make sure all is good. I left them a picture of jacking points, G13 coolant to replace the lost amount, even left notes on the hood, how to open it and place it on the folded rear seats.

On Tuesday morning after paying £430, I was about to drive off, when I'd noticed the front-right center hub release didn't face the valve, but completely opposite! I knew that's not possible to sit properly that way, and when checking, the hub was completely loose and literally fell into my hand! They didn't know the hub sits only 1 way, and they tired to force it and broke 1 side. 1 clip was broken ages ago, still it held great, but now with only 2 holding points, it just falls out. They put a zipper behind it, trying to hold it in place, but that didn't work of course.
I went back, showed them what they did, first they tried to come up with excuses, but then saying they order a part for next Monday. Now I'm waiting and getting ready for probably more excuses as it's not a cheap part.
It's usually a good garage, the engine runs great, even more quiet than before, but if I didn't know how to place the hub correctly, it'd fallen off few streets later and probably drove over it too.
When I left the car there, I actually had a feeling to cycle back and remove the hubs to help them even further, but then I thought how could they mess that up...yeah they actually did 😠

Lord Boots, my good friend has already commented on an inaccurate statement; neither the XJ nor the Honda NSX were the first Aluminium Bodied cars intended for Mass Production...

Got a Half leather/Alcantara set of seats earlier and just finished fitting them. They have electric lumbar but my car didn't have it, is there a way to make them work? Cheers

Nice seats :) You'll want to talk to @timmus about fitting the lumbar wiring. However he's away until the end of the month and already had a huge pile of PM's before he went, so it might take a while for a reply. You're not too far from his base in Lancaster though.

It's fairly easy to power the lumbar motors temporarily, enough to reach a comfortable setting. All you need is two wires at 0v and 12v. Run them from the battery terminals, or it's easier to cut the entire length of the lead off an old 12v gadget and plug it in to the socket by the handbrake. Being careful not to short them against each other, touch the wires to the two terminals in the red connector under each seat to power the switch on the seat base.

Top tip, set them to their full extension / travel and try a few longer drives with them at that setting first - that’s how I had them set in Akoya and I found that this was the most comfortable setting.

I do miss lumbar in Audrey - in that car I have the earlier sports seats that were not specified with it and have less support there as a result.

car got serviced by someone other than me... new plugs, oil, filter, and air filter. But the post-cat lambda is borked (still original!) so that's up for replacement Monday.... and then it's off to Katsastus and then winter tyres and off the road again.

Today I sorted The issues Jelly failed it's mot on.
1. Offside side lamp dim. Took out led and replaced with yellow looking std bulb.
2. Offside headlamp motor not working. Replaced fuse.
3. Airbag Light on. Plugged in the roof sensor module and cancelled warning. Module had been removed with the headlining.
So other bits...
found nearside headlamp upper mount snapped. Superglue, then hot stapled with 2 staples.
As the headlining is out I decided to fit sound deadening mat. Its 2mm thick so hoping this doesn't impact on the headlining when replaced. At least when the roof is tapped there's just a dull thud now!
Just headlining fittings and re-cover the A and D pillar trims, plus the sun visors. Then fingers crossed it all fits back together!

Hi, is there separate fuses for the headlamp motors? Eg, my right hand, one is moving but not my left one?
