Today I.....

My gear change has been stiff since I bought her (3 weeks ago). But last night in the cold it was REALLY stiff, loosened up as she warmed up.
Hoping a gearbox oil flush and change might alleviate things a bit.
Sounds like it may have had the the wrong fluid put in it would recommend the oil from VW/Audi and then you know it’s compatible

It’s got a refurbished rear axle to go on so I’ll do the front brakes at the same time, no Porsche calipers though as you wouldn’t see them! Lol

Heed the advice buy GENUINE Audi gearbox oil.

Although could also be the selector tower bearing has got wet.
I know, I'm dreading that.
Even more possible as the bonnet drain pipe assembly thingy is missing. (Not for much longer though @A2Steve.)

Why "genuine" Audi oil?
Audi don't make oil, I think in the past it was made by Fuchs. Now by Castrol.

For the gearbox oil it is just the "done thing" and Audi oil is always used. It is the same oil they fitted to the gearbox from new and said it was for life. Reality is oil leaks and gets contaminated by water and rust.

Engine oil and gearbox oil very different.

I don't dispute that quality oil is paramount. I'm just saying Audi don't make oils, it's made for them and branded as their own.
It's the same as OE spares. VAG don't own foundries, spares are made for them by a reputable maker.

End of the day it is your car. The genuine Audi gearbox oil is certainly the best way to go. Agree VAG does not make everything but everything fitted to the cars is to Audi spec.

Again that is engine oil and not gearbox oil.
It's also American.
But I don't get your point, thinking it just applies to engine oils.

Thank you Dave, the inside is coming along with the heated cloth seats. It’s a 90 with an MYP, lovely to drive, one of my favourites.
I’ve not seen or heard of another Piedmont red 90 other than mine since I first looked at the A2 roughly 3 years ago, so it’s unlikely many more exist in the U.K. George. Rare indeed.

Just to add to this, both my Touran and the A2 (admittedly both with six speed gearboxes as the A2’s GRJ was swapped out for a PTW) have Redline MT-LV in them in order to improve the gear change. LV stands for low viscosity (and is when compared to OE Audi spec).

The oil itself is supposed to be superior to OE spec and hence still able to offer full protection so best of both worlds - it is considerably more expensive however.

Graham would no doubt not approve and that is fine, I’m just giving you another data point - if I had chosen not to use this specific oil I would probably use an Audi approved / OE oil.

Audi specify a different gearbox oil in the six speed so the one for the A2 is not used. The point I was making is OEM is always the way to go and if not it must be to at least Audi spec.
Ah- I hadn't realised they spec is different. Thanks for clarifying that point Graham.

Today was a quick oil and filter change. Also found there to be a bit of oil around the egr valve so that may need a little investigation.
An old fashion set of ramps are very handy for getting under for the sump plug
