Today I.....

Is it tricky to remove the rear tailgate trim? The alarm has been going off after few seconds when the car is locked, and fault code shows rear glass sensor. I assume connection is damaged/rusty. Cheers

No, it simply pulls off. Try using something plastic and firm to slide under one corner and pull down. Careful it doesn't drop to the floor or the lock release cord may get damaged.

Wooden spatula is awesome especially if curved

As Steve mentioned pop the pull cord out of the trim and remove handle then push the cord inside trim hopefully will avoid damage as they always go crashing to the floor when doing it on your own

I'm running out of garages in this area.

MOT passed 3 days ago, issues mostly caused by rubber boots perishing, which isn't surprise on a 20yo car tbh. 1 major issue was O/S wishbone boot split. The mechanic said, they can't change just the boot(?), as it comes in one piece with wishbone which is £90+1hour labour. With MOT it cost £225.
Today, on my way to work, over 20mph a loud click-click noise can be heard from the wishbone area, so I had to turn back and cycle to work in the rain. I'll put the car on the ramps tomorrow, and see what have they messed up.

They also managed to bend and break 2 alloy cap legs, just like the previous garage last year  even though I told them specially, do not put them back as they need to be aligned precisely.
Of courses they broke some, along with the chipped paint on nearly every alloy 🤬 When I'd confronted them about it, the so-called mechanic said, he forgot what I said about the caps, and I'd just touch-up paint the marks, as it's old paint anyway. Yeah, I was not happy. And he actually had an A2 as a run around, and he still didn't know basic stuff.
Im really fed-up with these bad "mechanics". Any recommendations around Bournemouth area? Cheers

Good Evening,

Two comments.

1. Next time, present the car to the garage with the alloy caps removed prior.

2. You would have had a cast wishbones on a 2001 car and true the bushes are not replaceable and replacement is required. I believe new cast wishbones are no longer available from Audi but aftermarket options are available which I hope was sourced as opposed to the later pressed steel version from Audi, otherwise you end up with sides not matching which sounds wrong to me.

I knew I'd have  , I even called them back, saying not to do that.

So they could've just replaced the dust cover? The cast wishbone itself was absolutely fine and still solid.
I had a look that day, and it's the same style wishbones I've had, one peice, only looks newer and grease around the bushes.

Hello Sylvester.
I share your frustrations on poor mechanics.
When I had my wishbones and driveshaft boots replaced 3 years ago, I didn't leave the wheel centres on.
I also removed the undertray and the wheelarch liners. I know this might not be possible for some owners.
This was partly in the hope the labour charge would be smaller, and I didn't trust them to fit them back properly,
especially as there's some damage to the lower bumper area.
I always like to have all the old, removed parts back, but they'd already thrown them away.
I'm replacing the front discs and pads ( an unnecessary advisory last year in my opinion ), myself now.
I'm fitting Mintex (opinions welcome).
I've found careless work by a previous Essex garage gorilla with the pad sensor connector. Quite likely he was the guy that cross threaded the sump plug previously, and ruined the B-post electrical plug through ignorance of its construction.
I've repaired the pad sensor, and hope it doesn't present a problem.
The MOT is due within a month.
If successful, I need to find a garage in east Kent to do the cambelt etc.
Does anyone know if AT Motors in Dover are still A2 experts? Their website still shows an A2 as a courtesy car,
though it could be well out of date.
Best of luck. Keith.

I assumed because the garage said it was not replaceable there was a problem with what I should have called the ball joint and you did not seem certain. You could ask them exactly why they needed to replace it. Actually £225 for wishbone replacement and MOT including vat(?) sounds quite reasonable to me.

Yes but in fairness the £2 ones are not the best quality it's almost worth buying a quality later bolt on ball joint just for the dust cover, as mentioned the price for the arm with fitting and MOT isn't the worst I have seen but a touch concerning if that side as now started to knock

Collected the new car. Not a happy journey home. Airbag warning light on puncture and increasingly stiff gear change. Might reject it. Bummer.
Oh dear!! It's very quickly becoming hard to find a good one, they're being kept. Seems a lot of trash for sale outside the forum these days. What gearbox is it in your new car?

My gear change has been stiff since I bought her (3 weeks ago). But last night in the cold it was REALLY stiff, loosened up as she warmed up.
Hoping a gearbox oil flush and change might alleviate things a bit.

Today I put Rosie’s new wheels on. Thank you @A2Steve for the idea!
