600 miles from a tank???

I am still thinking of popping the 16s back on simply for aesthetics, yes. I would definitely have a play with the tyre pressures on that to find a reasonable balance between ride and rolling resistance. I've got used to the ride on 15s at 42psi now, and my 16s are slightly oversized at 195/50/16, so there's a bit of extra sidewall to play with. But I would imagine I would see a related MPG drop switching to the 16s due to increased wheel weight and tyre width.

True.
Once my 205/45/17 tyres have worn out, I'm going to down-size to 205/50/16, meaning I'll hopefully shed some weight and gain some bounce. Never say never, but I can't see myself going for 15" wheels as they just look too small.
At the end of the day, what's it going to cost you to run the wheels you like? £10 a year? For the sake of looking at my car and thinking "wow, what a beauty", it's worth the small penalty in economy. After all, I got 72mpg running on 17s. :)

Are you still considering going back to your 16" wheels? If you were to run them at a similar tyre pressure, do you think the ride would become unacceptable?

I found 16s at 42-ish psi to be quite harsh (although still usable). The 15s at 45 were a relief (but also note that I went for a non-standard size with a bit extra sidewall). But if you can cope with 17s, then the 16s at high pressure might be fine for you.

I'm coping ok with 17s at the moment, though I have as big a sidewall as possible. Also, I'm running them at 32psi with the Spidan springs, so it's ok for comfort. I'm definitely going to move down to 16s and am hoping that I can up the pressure a bit without a net loss of comfort. The added pressure plus the reduced weight should help my mpg a little, I hope.

I have a 42ltr TDI which I get 620 miles from

I never take the revs over 2000rpm and sometimes go from 3rd gear to 5th.

I anticipate stopping and remove my foot from the gas. i never put the car on neutral as this consumes fuel whereas leaving it in gear consumers zero.

Ive taken pics of the miles I get at the 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 etc fuel makers.

on the 1st quater I get 200-240 miles alone. This is cheating (a little) as I fill up diesel to the maximum, so the car is probably loaded with 43 or 44 litres (inc tank delivery pipe).

The number of miles also depends on the type of driving, city or motorway. I also have a TDi90 which i dont seem to get the same mileage from my TDi75.

Regardless A2's are get for Hypremiling and my dream would be to have a 3L from germany. I want to remove my rear seats from my car to make it lighter but my family and work collegues think im a loser and need professional help!! LOL

please check the post : http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?16910-Miles-to-a-full-tank/page4&highlight=miles+to+full and check the pic on the last post. this is how much Im getting to the 1st quater

Hi Nimz
You should set yourself up with a Fuelly account, like quite a few of the MPG-obsessed members on this site have done (including myself!).

Been following this thread lately so thought I might add my findings for me. Normally get about 380 miles from a tank (34L) Just had a trip to The Lakes (yes very wet) so filled up to the brim, put my tyre pressures to 34psi, (normally have them at 30 psi in SE alloys) and set of and never went over 60, stuck at 50-55 mostly.
Anyhow, returned home and my gauge is on exactly half a tank and covered 294 mile. Not saying I'll get another 294 but will be interesting to see ...... have another trip planned there next week .... weather permitting.

I'm hoping to get 500miles from a tank in Sweden soon, let's see. Relatively low speeds (90-110km/h) and warm weather would help. this is a petrol and small tank, remember ;)

Good Lord! I also have the 34L tank and usually feel pretty smug when I get 210 on half a tank. Which normally equates to 60 MPG so you must be somewhere around 80 MPG !!

Letting the foam settle after the first click, then slowly filling the inlet neck until you can see the fuel level (brimming) will give you another couple of litres I guess.

Venting is when you open the little valve on the right-hand side of the inlet pipe (a couple of inches in) with the tip of the nozzle. It leads to the vapour expansion chamber (which is a hangover from the petrol tanks, because petrol vaporises easily, and diesel doesn't). It's fine to vent a diesel tank (but never vent a petrol tank). That's where the final couple of litres comes from.

I think the tank & pipework capacity is some way above 42 litres (with the larger tank). Using my standard filling technique (first click, let it settle, stop at second click, without opening the vent valve), I have managed to get 41.92 litres in.

Did'nt have The Lakes trip as planned, however been doing a bit of town driving and 2 trips upto Newcastle, light came on at 470 miles ...... so pleased with that.
Son's borrowed it tonight to drive down to Alton Towers tomorrow, ..... now time to worry :-/

I don't know about the A2, but some people have fitted an auxiliary fuel tank to other VAG models. It goes in the boot. The false floor in the A2 could be an interesting location to fit one of these.

Fitting an extra fuel tank in a tdi. That will be so bad its just gotta be good. Apart from the extra weight when fully laden and the engineering challenges it be be one good touring car.

Sunday evening on the way back from "up north", I saw DIS telling me 720km. Since I'd already done 80kms since filling, I figure 500miles is possible from a Petrol with 34l tank. Requirement would be clear roads and 80km/h.

My (new!) DIS was showing me 650miles range not long after a full fill up last week - I've got to 190miles on the first quarter so I'm confident I'll break 600 at least as unfortunately I got stuck in a huge traffic jam yesterday which killed my mpg somewhat!

I managed to pump 43.3 litres of diesel into my tank the other night when the temperature was down around 2C using vent and brim, and the fuel gauge was about halfway between the reserve and showing empty. Can clearly get quite a lot more than 42 litres in if you try hard enough!

At least one German owner has fitted his 1.2Tdi with a 42L tank. That should give him a range of 1360km or more!
