A few pics from my latest mod (open sky)

I was at the point where I was about to put in the engine. The original A2 engine was out of the car, and the engine bay was ready for the new engine. However the flange towards the transmission is different on the Polo engine, so I had to put the A2 engine back in.

It would be interesting to find a DSG transmission that would fit the Polo engine..... :)

Any progress with the engine? Why change the whole thing, wouldn't just new cams and a remap be the same?

It didn't work out. I pulled the old engine out and found a few challenges on the way such as inlet and outlet manifold etc. I was actually seconds from putting in the new engine when I discovered the gearbox flange is different on the Polo engine. I had to put the old engine in again, but I kept the Polo exhaust manifold on it. It's a bolt-on fit and it doesn't have the small catalyc converter as the A2 manifold.

I'm having the MOT done (that's not the name in DK, but for ease of understanding...) next month, so I will find out whether it has caused any problems.

I haven't had the car dynoed, but it feels faster than with the old manifold. Especially the low rev torque feels significantly improved.

interesting !
I'm new to A2's, so excuse me...
You mean that now you have no cat ?
Is the A2 cat part of the exhaust manifold ??
Does a manifold change involve to take the A2 engine out, or can it be done with the engine in situ ?
If the latter, that's a job I can undertake, and I guess a 2nd hand Polo manifold should be pretty cheap...

The A2 has 2 catalyc converters. One very small one in the manifold and another bigger one below the car in the exhaust system. That's why I expect it to be OK with just the bigger one.

It should be possible to replace the manifold without taking the engine out.

Is there no Lambda sensor after the small manifold cat ?
Is the Polo manifold that you've fitted specific to the 100hp version ? (before going to a scrapyard and looking for that part...)

Yes there is a lambda sensor in the A2 manifold. You need to drill a hole in the Polo manifold and weld a new adapter for the lambda sensor in the hole. You should be able to buy one in your local car parts shop. They are standard size.

The manifold I installed on my car is from the 101 HP version. I don't know whether they are different on the other engine versions.

I have installed a body kit since the last pictures, so the car looks much better now.

Have you got photos of this to put on here as the body kits looking like the mod of the moment and being on a silver A2 how did you find the fit ? and how does it look as Ian (driveforward) says the fit takes some work to look good on a silver car (just because you can see the gaps more) than it would on a black or darker coloured car.

This has still got to be the ultimate mod ;)

Cheers Phil

I'll try and post some pics in the near future. The install of the body kit took me a couple of hours and it is a perfect fit. I have no gaps anywhere at all and it looks 100% factory installed. I used duct tape and small wooden blocks to keep it in place while the glue dryed over night.

In fact I bought one more A2 a couple of months ago, and I'm bying one of the body kits for it as well from Dave at Stoke. So far I installed a K&W coil over suspension and 18" wheels as well as a 6 speed transmission (and an MTM ECU chip... 100HP/240NM). It came with a lot of factory options such as open sky, leather, nav sat system, MFSW etc., so it doesn't require a lot of work to "get there".

I don't have to say I LOVE the A2's!!!! :)

Phil, I'd thought with you having access to all that workshop gear, you'd have fitted a body kit by now. :D

Cheers

Your joking, i tryed for two years to get my arch plown in and ended up getting the bodyshop that did my hinges to do it. Were not like a normal bodyshop we don't get time to do are own stuff( to many people take the PI** and spoil it for others), i was trying to use the ramp to do FSD's but a big fat NO, sometimes they are a bit funny

I could probably get them painted sneak them in with another car, still thinking about this as i said, still not sure weather to do them Black to keep that colour line

Watch this space it may come off
