A2 Convenience Unit Problems

Hi All, new to this site, so excuse if i make some mistakes

Looks like i need to get a new convenience unit for my Audi A2 1.4 2001. the part number on the unit is 8Z0959433P. however i have been advised by Slough Audi that the part they can supply is 8Z0959433Q and that this should work fine since my part has been discontinued.

So my questions are:

1) is this true? has anyone else come accross this?
2) should i buy a genuine part from Audi or should it be OK to buy a second hand part i have managed to find on ebay - new part number: 8Z0495433Q
3) do i need to get this CCU programmed to work in my car? my remote key fob does not work (hasnt done so for while). i actually have two keys - 1 for the door which does not have a remote fob and 1 for the ignition that does have a remote key fob. The kley for the door has always (untill the CCU died) operated the central locking and while the ignition key remote fob was working the buttons operated the central locking too.
4) do i need to get new remote key fobs?
5) anyone in Slough (or near) that can help?? spent a bit of money with Audi already so really want to keep costs to a minimum

any help with this really appreciated

thanks

Hello Sonza, and welcome to the A2OC...

Central convenience control unit problems are common. In fact, there are about 4 members at the moment who are dealing with CCCU issues.

1). Yes, this is true. The Q unit superseded the P unit.
2). Um... See below.
3). Yes, it'll need to be coded/programmed to your car. The reason your remote central locking doesn't work is because this function is also controlled by the CCCU. CCCUs have a tendency to die in stages, meaning you've actually had CCCU issues for some time.
4). No, your existing remote fob can be programmed to work with the replacement CCCU.
5). The nearest person to you who'll certainly be happy to help is Sarge (username Sarge786). Not only is he a very decent bloke who provides a great-value service, but he's got all the A2-specific knowledge and tools necessary to do the fitting, programming and remote fob matching. He's based in London E17. You can message him through his profile, by clicking here: http://www.a2oc.net/forum/member.php?4229-Sarge786

2) continued...

There is a guy in Germany, Lau, who specialises in fixing faulty CCCUs. He has figured out why they go wrong and replaces the faulty internal components. His repaired units are thought to be more reliable than new units bought from Audi. You can send your CCCU to him and he'll fix it and send it back to you for the grand sum of £75.
The small catch is that, without a CCCU in your car, your car won't lock... even by turning the key in the lock. For you, this may already be the case.
Lau will generally get the repaired unit back to you within 2 weeks.
You can message Lau through his profile, by clicking here: http://www.a2oc.net/forum/member.php?7903-Lau

The club has a spare Q unit that is currently being used to help members with faulty CCCUs. The spare can be used to keep an A2 on the road whilst Lau is doing his work. The queue is currently about 3 people long, meaning that, if you join the queue now, it'll be at least 6 weeks before your car is repaired. This may of course not suit you, but the option is there.

Any further questions, please just ask...

Thanks Tom,

great help... will get onto Sarge and Lau. How do i get onto the waiting list?

apart from not having lockable doors, is there any other downside to not having the CCCU in place?

i actually have another problem too that i didnt list before. I have an EPC light on the car, through reading posts on this site i changed the Brake Light Switch (which was a part i got from German and Swedish) and th light is still comes on intermitantly. will this be because of the CCCU too?

also, i have just changed my battery since the old one apparently wasnt holding a charge - could this be something to do with the ECP / brake light switch? i read on another site that a faulty brake light switch enagages the brakes but doesnt light up the brakes and hence drains the battery.

agains thanks for the help.

The 'queue' is a fairly informal affair at the moment. Those who wish to make use of the lone CCCU should simply write as such on this thread: http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?21350/page5

Yes, you'll lose a few other functions. The interior lights won't work, the button to open the petrol cap won't work, the alarm and its interior sensors won't work, you'll find that the electric windows may behave differently, etc. So many of the car's functions are governed by the CCCU. You'll be able to drive the car, but little else besides.

I have an EPC light on the car... will this be because of the CCCU too?

The EPC (Engine Power Control, if my memory serves) light could be on for all manner of different reasons. I drive a TDI and, as such, I have precious little knowledge of the 1.4 petrol's foibles. Sarge has a 1.4 petrol and will be able to diagnose precisely why the light is on, using his diagnostic computer, and then advise. It will not be related to the CCCU failure.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Tom,

i have bought a CCCU, do i have to get it programmed from an Audi dealer? i have spoken witha couple of garages and ECU tuning specialists and they all say i have to go to Audi. i hope this isnt true.
