A2 Spare wheel

I have an Audi A2 (1.6 FSI) 2002 registered car. As you all know it does not have a spare wheel. I have had a number of problems when the tyre got punctured - had to tow the car and also the alloys got damaged etc! I am not very happy with the repair kit supplied by Audi. I have checked with Audi dealers and the price for a spare wheel is around £300. I cannot afford it. Is there any places (like a scrap yard/second car shop) that you know where I can get a spare wheel (Wheel size is 185/50/R15). Perhaps some of you may have a spare wheel.
I would very much appreciate your help.

Genuine A2 spacesaver wheels can be had from Ebay for about the £100-120 mark, which is expensive, but a lot less than from Audi direct.

Your statement that the A2 doesn't come with a spare wheel is actually incorrect though - it was a no-cost option from the factory, which is what a lot of original buyers (me included) went for.

If you want to get just any old spare wheel, then you need to look for a 5-stud wheel, with a PCD of 100mm (this limits thinkgs to old style A3s and old style TTs) with an offset of around the 35mm mark.

Keep the overall diameter to less than 600mm and you should be fine.

Cheers,

Mike

Audi A2 Spare wheel

Thanks for your prompt reply. I wasn't aware of the fact that they do supply space saver wheels as I bought my car second hand. Again thanks for that info.
I will tried eBay, I found one but the tyre size is 175/60 /R 15 and mine says 185/50/R16. Will this fit my car? Sorry I am really bad with the car tyre sizes!

The space-saver is a 15" wheel, no matter what you have fitted (16" SE wheels in your case).
Don't forget that it is intended as an emergency wheel, for use up to 50mph only for short periods.

Just imagine what it looks like on my car with 17" wheels!

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks for your reply. So I can use the 175/60/R15 and use as a emergency wheel. Many thanks for you advise and help.

Absolutely - when you do the maths, both wheel/tyre combos come out at 591mm, so perfect fit.

All you'll need is the bracket, 4 bolts and the hand-bolt to secure it in place.

Hi Skipton,

Does a "standard" (non-A2) spacesaver fit on the A2 bracket? I am carrying a spare from a TT, but have not bothered to get a bracket 'cos I assumed it would not fit since the un-inflated A2 spare is smaller diameter........ or am I misinformed?

ScotAlan

Interesting one that Alan,

According to my catalogue, the TT spare is a 3.5J x 18 wheel, but this is almost certainly a typo - some TTs were supplied with 16" rims and the discrepancy would be too much, I think. Also, if this is the case, the chances of your TT spare fitting the A2 are virtually zero!

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Skipton,

The car is not here at the moment, but from memory, the spacesaver is a narrow 16". the offset is marked on it, and is close to 35; I will check those in the morning! The overall diameter is very close to the A2s standard SE wheel and it is definately a 5-stud with a 100mm PCD. Why would it not fit the car?

It is currently strapped down under the false floor, but I would prefer to bolt it down. I had assumed that it would not mate up with the standard bracket.

ScotAlan

From the dimensions you give, I can't see why it wouldn't fit an A2 - I was merely going off the information in the part catalogue, which says the spacesaver is an 18" wheel.

When you get to look at the wheel properly, let me know the markings and I'll let you know of its suitability.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Skipton,

Thanks for that; I'll try it on today and let you know how I get on!

I am quite sure It will fit the car; I was hoping to find out if the original bracket would be any use!

ScotAlan

Hi Skipton,

Wheel is a 3 1/2x16, ET38; tyre is 125/70x16.... seems to be plenty clearance front and rear, although I would always fit the spacesaver on the rear.

Seems like a pretty good match then and I can't see why the original bracket wouldn't work either as the measurements are so close.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi ScotAlan
Don't forget the std A2 spacesaver has a collapsible tyre. If the tyre on your 16" rim is fully inflated then the threaded insert and standard position of the hole in the boot floor may not align. As Skipton said in a previous post, it should be easy enough to modify the bracket and re-drill the boot floor to suit the larger dia wheel.

Cheers Spike

Hi Spike,

Thanks for that; I thought that the "original" A2 spacesaver had a smaller diameter when uninflated, so (presumably!) was carried closer to the boot corner than would be possible with the usual type of spacesaver.

I am kind of known for modding things, but this is theoretically the wifes car, so she has asked me not to alter it; I might get away with fitting the factory bracket, but if it needs altered, I will have no chance!

I had wondered if there might be a way to get it in using a different stud-hole, or something, But without seeing a bracket I can't tell.

I have never even sen an A2 collabsible spare!

ScotAlan

If you DO need to mod the bracket, it'll be just a case of welding a new nut in place of the old one (you can make this out on the bracket photo - it's just to the left of the missing triangle of metal on the bracket).

You'll then have to make another hole in the battery cover, or, if you don't have the bracket currently fitted, make a hole in the appropriate place!

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the advice and the pic link; Wife has been caught out by me going off to do an "engine service" and returning at night with a 2.0l engine fitted in place of a 1300 (Mk2 escort van) or a V8 fitted ( Mk4 Cortina.....and RWD Cavalier)or going out to do tyre pressures and an oil change before a road rally, and coming home a couple of hours later with a half-cage, bucket seats, harnesses and a fire-eater in the family saloon (Series2 Audi 80 Sport) So she has got a little "touchy" about me doing anything to "her" car which involves a "modification"......... For some reason she assumes I will get carried away............

However, it loks from the pics thet the thumb-wheel goes in the centre-hole of the wheel, so I might get away with using a thumb-wheel from an earlier Audi through a stud-hole. this might let me slide the spare over enough to clear the side of the boot.

I would be very grateful if someone could measure how far the hole in the boot floor for the thumbwheel is from the side of the boot!

Thanks in anticipation!

AlanB:)

odd sizes and wheel sensors

If a 15" emergency wheel is fitted to car with 16 " won't different revs cause ABS/traction to "have fits"

Not if the appropriate tyre size is fitted which takes the overall diameter up to that of the standard 16" wheel/tyre combination.

Cheers,

Mike
