Airbag checks

A2 75 Tdi is in for servicing and MOT today.
The service handbook says I should have the airbags checked by a VAG dealer every 14 years. I'm not sure this has ever been done (2001 vintage). A few questions:

1. Do I need to do this?
2. Does it need to be done by a VAG dealer or could any competent garage (e.g. Honda independent) do it?
3. What is the likely cost?
