Aluminium Fatigue

I had to have a bracket replaced on the inside of my drivers door, dont think it was due to aluminium fatigue. A local garage did the work, once they found out how to remove the door skin!!

On opening and closing my door a loud 'click' could be heard several times, now its fine tho!

There are two reasons for it: Rivets tear off or a plastic role sharpens itself off and therefore has the door catch volumes play.

mine too!

My 2003 A2 1.6FSI has the problem too. At the moment it is just a 5mm rip at the upper corner on the drivers side. It's not much to look at, but with a fingernail you can clearly feel it.

sob!

Hi, new member here.
My girlfriend and I have bought an A2 1.2 TDI 3L (2002-model) a couple of months ago. Generally it is in very good condition, but after reading on this forum I found out that it has the small cracks at both door hinges (it is a Danish model, so driver's seat is to the left). What I have not been able to discern from this thread so far is, what are the long term consequences of this issue? Will the fault develop further, and cause serious damage, or is it more of a psychological/cosmetical matter?

Any update people?

Just went out to the car and opened the passenger door and heard a noise coming from the door when opening/closing. I noticed that the passenger door has got the crack but its worse than the drivers door. Now thats only shown since we found out that there was this problem (two months).

doors

ive have mine rejected under the 3 year warranty so stoke audi are waiting for a response to the 12 warranty claim in the mean time some one hit my car side on so ive had 1 door replaced and it is now modified on the hinge area so 1 door to go.stoke have asked the body shop to save the door so they can show the claims department the crack on my old door.

Tank is going in on Monday for his operation - 4 days apparently!

The warranty claim was accepted with less than a month to go on the warranty, but a badly designed part should be replaced regardless of warranty status.

Cheers.

Mike

What is the proposed solution?

Our was rejected full stop (outside of warrenty and its not corroading sir). I am left with spending money on an independant survey of it. but all that will prove is the door check strap (bar) has streached and the door issue is secondary and therefore not covered.

So..

If the fix is straight forward I can go direct to the body shop and spend some money there..

Just need to know what they need to do (cut-out)

have you had your ones done? erstens
No, it was someone else.
I still was not at the Audi dealer. (yes, I was, but together with two other guis, who haave the same problem and an A2 still in warrenty. So the dealer first wanted to ask for their cars. I will try some times next at an other dealer next my home.)

We have diffenrent informations about the question, who pays for that. Some got new doors.
One had been welded! (at the dealers cost). And others are been told, there is no guarantee on that (ok, but there should be goodwill).

I'm pleased to report that Tank now has a pair of new front doors and that they are of the new design (with the small indentation all around the hinge plate).

SKF bodyshop in Audenshaw have done a superb job and the panel gaps are now better than from the factory!

Tank needs to go back in for the rubbing strips to be replaced, as Audi insist that the old ones are re-used, unless impossible due to damage caused when removing them, which is always the case, as the paint splinters.

The new check straps are of a slightly different design too, but still allow for the door to be opened to the same extent as before.

Once the work is complete, I'll post a few photos, but don't know how well they'll show things due to the paint colour.

If anyone out there is having problems getting the doors done, I would suggest you try an Audi recognised aluminium bodyshop.

Cheers,

Mike

So sounds like any of us without any warrenty are b****red then!!, Audi service is getting worse!!.

Don't throw in the towel Andy - I am still confident that the repair should come under the anti-corrosion warranty, which at 12 years, covers ALL A2s still.

Cheers,

Mike

Fatigue

Hi Guys,
This is my first post and this topic grabbed my attention. Not really sure if I have this problem but the front edge of my driver door catches on the front side panel. It looks like the door has moved 60 mm or so forward so not only is it catching the panel but also lets in a lot of wind noise.
I don't see any cracking but when recently having a repair done the garage mentioned that the door had 'dropped' and this was common on the A2. Any ideas guys?
Got to say I love my A2. :)

Stephen

60mm = 6cms drop = no way!

If that were the case there is no way the door would be able to close! Even if it is 6mm that's a considerable drop.

When I bought my 2003 A2 in September this year, the driver's door was misaligned by about 3mm. It was adjusted by Lincoln Audi and has been fine since. I also got their workshop to check whether there was any sign of cracking/tearing of the door skin around the door hinge plates. Fortunately there was no sign of this - not yet, anyway.

I'd suggest taking your car to your nearest Audi dealers and get them to check the hinge area of all the doors and realign the door that has dropped.

Hope you get things sorted soon.

Crack reported

I took my car to the local Audi dealer and showed them the crack on the drivers side (left). As a repair they recommended welding the crack.
I told them that welding doesn't fix the problem as a long term solution, since the design isn't good from the start. Eventually the door will crack again and welding doesn't make the material any better, just worse.
Apperantly they didn't know of the new door design available until I informed them about it. Doesn't that give you confidence? :)
So, now they are investigating the matter further and I am waiting for them to call me back with more information how to preceed from here.
The left check strap is also making noises and need to be replaced.
The right door isn't showing any crack yet though, and the check strap is fine.
