Auto headlight conversion with coming home/ leaving home lights

I missed the 'dash edge on right' I think. I pulled away the door seal but only found a flexible end cap and didn't spot a way through it. It was getting dim so I'll try again in bright light.

If I hadn't taken an hour to fit the new wiper arm it'd have been done better!

Thanks Steve

I Feed the wire through the circular "tube" that the headlight switch slides into and then feed it to the right, I just pull away the door seal at the level of the switch and you can easily feed the sensor through the dash edge on the right. You can then feed the wire up through the door seal to the top of the A pillar and then feed it into the gap at the top of the A pillar trim and stick it on the trim at the top so that it points upwards and to the left slightly.

I was being silly - this was how I'd run the cable too.

The fitting difficulty was not the cable but because the glued light mechanism is at a vey slight downward angle compared to original (it moved during the application of more hot melt glue - this must have softened the alignment 'dabs' I applied before the test fit allowing a little movement.) this means the housing for the rotary switches is slightly low and catches the dash mounting. Just a warning for other chrome ring cutters!

On the bright side - no need for tape to glue the switch in place. The friction and pressure from the tension of the misaligned components holds it in place beautifully and it can be removed with a bit of a pull. It also looks great. Ideal result!

GOOD NEWS !!!

The next batch of Auto Headlamp switches just arrived.

I will work through the thread to make sure I get the next 9 off in sequence (Only 9 because I need to send Allan S the one I forgot to send)

I will post a list here to show who the lucky 9 are, so if you haven't got your name down yet please post on here first.

Only when I have confirmed the list will I be asking for payment and delivery address, I will do that shortly.

Hi,

Have I overlooked you too?

Did you send any address details and payment?

I have added you to the list just so that you wont miss out but please let me know if you still need these?

The problem I have is sometimes ,matching the Forum name to the PayPal payment.

Thanks

Ok,

I have put together a list of people who have asked for the headlight switch from the second batch

The following people can buy one

Sabre74
FHI – PAID
Oneflewover - PAID
67Boris - PAID

I can provide 5 more is others want one, but if I have missed anyone I will need to bump them up the list
If you DO want one, please post on here first before PMing me, so that everyone can see how many are left.

Allan S paid for one in the first batch but didn't receive his (my mistake) that will go off ASAP
Andrew "FHI" has paid and will receive his in the next couple of days
I need Sabre74, Onflewover and 67Boris to let me know if they still want one
The next 5 people can order one and PM me their full name and address and pay the £30 (which includes P&P) via PayPal "Friends and family" using my email address [email protected]

Should there still be strong demand for these I will place a further order.

Just as an aside.
There was a stall at VAG in the manor on Sunday, selling the old style ones for £50 each!!!
That is the strength of this forum, we look after each other.
A2Steve and others also make sure that nobody has to pay full price for anything we need.

This is a GREAT forum and I am proud to be a part of it.

Did my conversion yesterday, quite tricky to get the switch to sit correctly and lock into place.

Problems are meant to be overcome

Indeed and in this case those small problems are worth it, when it is fitted fully with the new icon ring and chrome ring it looks great, I am just ham fisted when it comes to cutting things out.

Steve B

Completed my installation today. Hints for the cutting: rough cut using dremel grout removing tool followed by circular sanding barrel. Use aluminium ring as a template and fine tune sanding of plastic surround for a snug and clean fit.

The chrome ring arrived this morning and so I bit the bullet and had a go at opening up the hole for it and the headlamp switch.

I won't be doing that again! I am hopeless with things like this and end up butchering stuff.

I did manage to cut the hole and thanks to the chrome ring the edges are hidden.

One problem I have is that the switch is recessed a LOT (if I engage the locking mechanism in the switch.

The only way I can get the switch further forward is if I don't worry about it engaging in the locking holes?

Is that the issue everyone else had? If so what did you do to bring it further forward? Just glue it in place?

Doesn't that leave the fascia and switch loose?

For now I will leave it and see what I can do
