Bespoke Audi A2 Armrest Bracket and Trim (A6 C5) Group Order

View attachment 84635
I personally think this looks great and at £40 is still a fair price given the time each one is going to take to get ti this. You have to remember that something like this made in China would be made in thousands and so would only cost a few pounds to make. Being made small scale in Paul’s workshop was always going to be costly.

My only concern about the costs is the price of the bloody armrests are shooting up on eBay since they have now become popular ?
Evening steve,

The image you show is of Duncan's A1 fitting which does look superb. I do fully agree with what you say though, which is why an alternative option must be considered to keep the costs down. Whats been produced so far is great but just not quite as elegant as I'd hoped for. Sheet plastic is my next avenue to investigate.

Yes the armrests have annoyingly gone up in price recently.

Kind regards,

Tom

I suspect making the trims from plasticard sheet when there are so many curves in multiple planes to contend with may make it look a little Heath Robinson.
I’m definitely going for the 3D printed version.
Evening Ian,

You could well be right here but we need investigate further afield to at least attempt to keep the costs down for the members who have put faith in us to provide the best possible OEM fashioned finish whist watching the wallet. It may turn out that 3D printing is the only option but have the urge to try something else before production starts.

Members are more than welcome to purchase whats already been worked on whilst I continue to investigate different solutions.

We will get there but its going to take a little longer.

Kind regards,

Tom

Let’s see how the finished and painted 3D Plastics look and compare it to the fabricated from sheet plastic. Also the time involved in cutting / bending / gluing the sheet plastic together needs to be considered
This may be for one or two people but I doubt it will be for many as I think your are really underestimating the job in hand, complex double curves and flat sheet simply do not go in the same sentence

Evening again,

Now that the mention of investigating the use of sheet plastic, here it is:

Screen Shot 2021-08-24 at 23.35.38.png

It's available in different colours but the grey is reported to be a rather good match for a Platinum interior. Black is also available but a Swing and Twist finish will definitely require painting.

To use this plastic sheet it really is starting from the ground up and Graham has been doing this in his own time for the last week or so, progress isn't as fast as he'd like but he has his own life outside of all things A2 to keep in balance.

I'm sure he'll be along soon enough to show the progress already made, it will of course look a little Heath Robinson but will get there once adhered together. The difference is that it can be made to fit into the existing shapes/curves that remain on show on the base of the A6 armrest for an almost seamless look,

I fully appreciate that this approach may not be for everybody but I want to have different options available for a different look along with watching the wallet.

I'll keep trying other options to see whats possible.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hi all,
The wait is over as I have now finalised the design and costings for the 3D printed plastics
The prototype was posted on this threada few weeks ago, and I have not finished, painted and fitted the complete arm rest, bracket and plastics to my own A2
I have incorporated the suggestions from Graham with respect to sawing a little metal from the stem of the C5 armrest and adding a hole for the mounting bolt a little further back, the plastics have also had to be altered to accomodate this, but it does provide better access to the hand brake lever when the arm rest is in the down position
All brackets in batch one will have the extra hole and if you choose to order the plastics then this hole should be used as well as removing the surplus alloy from the Audi stem (2 min job with a hacksaw)

The plastics come in three sections, a couple of reasons for this -
(1) is allows some wiggle room to allow for minor differences in the centre tunnel plastic position in relation to the arm rest bracket and thus the final position of the arm rest
(2) it makes printing the parts feasable

The total print time is 4 hours, which coupled with the plastic filament cost unfortunatly means that the plastics will work out at £35 a set
Ex printer they have the usual 3D printer layer lines, but 20 mins with a DA sander and some car body stopper and they are ready to paint the colour of your choice. I used plasidip spray as it is very near to the soul black soft touch and as a similiar feel to the soft touch
I am NOT providing the plastics finished ready to fit, they will need sanding and painting to your choosen colour. You could choose to simply spray them and leave the layer lines visable.

and this is it fitted to the car

I will be providing brackets in the order at the begining of this thread, about 10 are welded and painted, the other will be completed tomorrow if all goes to plan
if you want plastics as well then there will be a slight delay of up to 2 weeks dependent on volumes as I will need to print them and propose to ship the bracket amd the plastics out together
I would expect postage to the UK to be around £6 signed for

Paul/Tom, please put me down for a set of plastics, to be shipped with my bracket. Time scale is not an issue guys.

Likewise - alternatively if anyone is offering a service to members who aren’t handy (or don’t have much free time on their hands) to get their arm rest looking as good as the one above, I would happily pay generously for their talents.

I was half expecting this request. If you are ok sawing off the excess metal from the arm rest stem then I will fill sand and spray black for £20
I only have black so unable to offer any other colour

I believe so. For two from memory.

The brackets will be done over the weekend for you then it is a case of how many in front of you want the plastics. My printer can only run at a rate of about two sets per day. Working from home as it’s advantages in that I can feed the printer through the day

Paul, I'm at no.16 on the list and I'll say yes please to you finishing and painting the plastics for £20 when you get to my order - black is fine ?

Tom @2work, I think we need another column on the spreadsheets :)

Let me know when & where to send payment.

Yes please Paul. If there’s any illustration that could be provided of exactly where to cut and by how much that would be useful, just to make it DJ (idiot) proof - that would be awesome.

I will post a picture if I took one. Basically you just slice the lug off the back of the stem as per picture I posted above last piccy in post no 169
