Bespoke Audi A2 Armrest Bracket and Trim (A6 C5) Group Order

Paul, I'm at no.16 on the list and I'll say yes please to you finishing and painting the plastics for £20 when you get to my order - black is fine

Tom @2work, I think we need another column on the spreadsheets :)

Let me know when & where to send payment.

Yes @2work another column is in order for finishing in black only

I think I'm last on the list but I would like the bracket and plastic surrounds please, I'm happy to fill and paint myself as I quite enjoy it.

I will post a picture if I took one. Basically you just slice the lug off the back of the stem as per picture I posted above last piccy in post no 169

Now it's clear - thanks Paul.

What about fixings for the armrest itself to bolt it to the car - looking at that pic, I think new ones will be needed, is that correct?

Hi all,
The wait is over as I have now finalised the design and costings for the 3D printed plastics
The prototype was posted on this threada few weeks ago, and I have not finished, painted and fitted the complete arm rest, bracket and plastics to my own A2
I have incorporated the suggestions from Graham with respect to sawing a little metal from the stem of the C5 armrest and adding a hole for the mounting bolt a little further back, the plastics have also had to be altered to accomodate this, but it does provide better access to the hand brake lever when the arm rest is in the down position
All brackets in batch one will have the extra hole and if you choose to order the plastics then this hole should be used as well as removing the surplus alloy from the Audi stem (2 min job with a hacksaw)

The plastics come in three sections, a couple of reasons for this -
(1) is allows some wiggle room to allow for minor differences in the centre tunnel plastic position in relation to the arm rest bracket and thus the final position of the arm rest
(2) it makes printing the parts feasable

The total print time is 4 hours, which coupled with the plastic filament cost unfortunatly means that the plastics will work out at £35 a set
Ex printer they have the usual 3D printer layer lines, but 20 mins with a DA sander and some car body stopper and they are ready to paint the colour of your choice. I used plasidip spray as it is very near to the soul black soft touch and as a similiar feel to the soft touch
I am NOT providing the plastics finished ready to fit, they will need sanding and painting to your choosen colour. You could choose to simply spray them and leave the layer lines visable.

Paul. Can the revised plastic geometry be used without having to cut off the rear lug of the armrest? i.e. Not sliding the armrest backward. I am concerned that cutting off that part of the bracket may not just weaken it but make it less stable on your fabricated bracket. If it can then I am in for set of plastic trim (un-finished). I am No14 on the first list
Thanks for all your hard work. It is appreciated.

Geoff

I can print you a set of the mk1 plastics that work with the arm rest in the forward hole without the need to trim the stem
Same price
Just make it known on the PayPal else I will forget

Evening everyone,

Apologies for not getting back to you all sooner, busy busy here right now.

I have just updated the list at Post #2 which has bumped @HPmuirt and @KozMo onto the order list.

All fields have been populated at best guess from whats contained within the thread so far.

If you remember back to the beginning, my goal was to be in a position to offer you an affordable armrest solution. At the forefront of my mind it would have to obliterate the price of the A1 Armrest that Duncan revealed along with being much cheaper than the Sydmeko Armrest. I feel that the costs revealed have risen far too high for me to say that the project is finished. I'm quite surprised no one has jumped in and said they might as well go for the Sydmeko Armrest as its probably cheaper once you add the cost of the A6 armrest to the bracket and painted trim.

I wanted a high quality, low cost item that looked OEM which would be the absolute obvious choice to go for. I won't give up though!

The A1 (A2) bracket that has been redesigned by Paul and produced by Cut-Tec is fantastic for under £7 each delivered. Paying £20 for it to be assembled, welded and painted is great but feel that a second run that may well end up increasing to £35 to assemble, weld and paint which is just too steep to be considered a success and other alternatives need to be considered.

The 3D Printed trim that has been produced so far has been deemed acceptable by some of you but it's still not what I had in mind for this project. Paul has done a great job here but for me it looks to lack the elegance that I had in mind and doesn't marry up to the armrest itself as I had hoped. I know nothing is impossible so will continue to peek down different avenues to find a another solution which can provide the OEM styling I desire for myself and those of you who can wait a little longer. If you cannot wait then Paul already has an interim answer.

As I don't see this project as finished yet I was going to lock this thread until I had things finalised, but I'm very aware that we have prematurely released pictures that has wetted your appetite and you cannot wait any longer. Paul will therefore take over there list (@depronman I'll email out to you shortly Sir) for the initial order and deal with your questions and enquiries. He will also explain the payment process but I'm guessing most of you will already have his details from previous purchases. No payment or address request PMs will come from me as this interim solution is Paul's and Pauls alone.

Group Order 2 is now on hold whilst I take this venture in a different direction.

I hope you all understand my concerns and that both Graham and I will get there with a solution that ticks more boxes than it currently does.

Kind regards,

Tom

Same for me too, as the armrest bracket is fitted!

Hi Tom, if I could explain how I see this from my point of view it may help:

So my understanding is that the Sydmeko item is £150. Compared with the ~£65 all-in this solution as it stands today will cost me, that is why for me it’s not in the same league - I assume others may agree with the logic here.

What Paul has come up with is good enough for me for now, even as an interim. If then a further refinement that you come up with in due course improves on this and significantly moves the game forward again (i.e. looks even more as if it’s not a modification at all and was fitted to the car from new even more so than Paul’s trim proposition), I could be tempted to “upgrade”.

I am happy to wait for the final product, i believe it's taken quite some time already so it won't hurt waiting a bit longer. If in the end it doesn't change then fair enough but I understand where Tom is coming from, he's got a vision and wants to achieve it and I can only respect that.

Morning David,

I fully understand your thoughts and totally accept your want/decision to proceed with what’s already on offer. You obviously got the armrest for a very good price like me but some have paid around £50 which has the costs rising to almost that if the Sydmeko armrest.

I’m certainly not here to get in the way of any sales of what has been produced so far as it’s ok for an interim finish.

All I’m pointing out is that we have collaboratively tried to get it to the look way both Graham and I had in mind but it’s not quite got there yet.

As with any project, you must constantly check that the item ticks the boxes on the scrap bit of paper at the very beginning of proceedings. We should have challenged the product before it’s revealed but didn’t have the chance unfortunately. If it doesn’t meet what you expected then you revise, take a step back and try to come up with different options to move forward. As the A2 hasn’t had an armrest for some 20 years a few more weeks should matter in my eyes.

It does seem that the project is at a crossroads where I think it’s best to pause and reevaluate before choosing then next road to take.

I’d hate to see you out of pocket if you chose to upgrade further down the line.

Kind regards,

Tom

Paul. Thanks. If possible I would like to confirm whether having the mount in the forward position works for me, if not I would revert to your modified position. i.e commit now to the bracket with two holes, install, evaluate the position and then decide which plastic trim version to order!
is this acceptable to you?
Geoff

I will need to unbox it all as packaged it up this morning
Could I suggest that you take as I have packaged and try it.
I had this exact configuration in my A2 for two weeks and found it to be great.
I only moved the hole rearwards because Graham and Tom requested it
If you want to try the reward position it is a simple matter of drilling the hole (I did this with the bracket fitted in the car) if you prefer the reward position then commit to sawing the lug of the arm rest stem then return the plastics to me and I will exchange for a different set

The plastics in the box at the moment are sanded and filled ready to paint so the prep work pre painting as already been done, this was because I prepared these plastics for my own car pre the moving the hold rearwards and the redesign of the plastics

Let me know either way

Paul

Unfortunately unforeseen family issues has prevented me from progressing the sheet plastic trim again. Here is the current prototype.

The corners / overlaps are still work in progress.

Evening Graham,

Great work so far Sir. I fully appreciate that some will think it looks rather prototypical but this is obviously not the finished item. The work to have this ready soonest is ongoing in the background.

For everyone else out there…. Once adhered at the corners and made to fit perfectly into the existing base of the A6 armrest it will look splendid. It will also follow the rebated lines that flow downwards on the armrest base which will be the access door to remove the armrest or adjust the handbrake cable tension.

It is a work in progress but this is certainly what I’ll be waiting for. Once painted it will be brilliant.

The current thought is to email you a set of templates to make the trim item yourself for the DIYer but there should also be an option to have it made and sent to you ready to go. Not sure about paint yet though.

All options are being considered to perfect this.

Kind regards,

Tom

I have started to issue PM to members on the list in order of first interest (there are the odd exceptions for logistical reasons)
The remaining brackets will be welded up and painted over the next week or so and any printed plastics will be produced as quickly as I can print them.
You will also need 2off either M5 or M6 nuts, bolts and washers about 25mm long. Personally I openeded the holes up to 6.2mm because this suited the bolts that I had to hand, but the brackets are drilled to take M5 bolts
You will also need one M8 nut, bolt and washer about 40mm long

cheers,
Paul
