Boot Struts

Good idea, I ordered a set of struts from the audi a3 8 L. Supposedly same length compressed and same expansion rate as the a2, but with an extra force of 50N compared to the original 370N for the a2.

I will try to post a small video as well as a reference for potential buyers

Yep, we will see. I figure it is only 5kg of extra force. As mentioned by steve C there is een model with 8Z0 pn with the same 420N , in this thread.
If it were too strong, I will stick to the standard 370N. I will let you know, there due to arrive between 3rd and 5th february.

I ordered these.
Morning Duncan,

I’m quite interested to see the results of these A3 8L struts. I do hope they fit.

The factory fitted struts on OEM were fine before fitting the Votex style spoiler. With the added weight I have on 2 occasions now forgot to assist the boot lid fully up and have bumped my head.

I wander with the additional force that the 8L items provide gets my boot lid open with the additional weight I’ve added whilst not being to aggressive at the same time.

Whilst I’m happy to pay for new struts from @CreweAudi, I’m not sure they’ll be strong enough for my now non factory set up.

Looking forward to your comments next week.

Kind regards,

Tom

The thing to watch out for with tailgate struts is that most of the none OEM struts don’t have any damping on the last few cms.
They hold the tailgate open ok but there is a bang as it hits the “stops” at full opening.
the OEM struts seem to have some cushioning effect as it hits the stop.
So please do check this and see how your SGS ones are about this.

Afternoon Steve,

Any advice on which to go for with a Votex style spoiler.

I really don’t mind paying for an OEM set but just thought They might not be strong enough for the extra non factory weight.

Completely understand that aftermarket items may be a little too aggressive but guess the OEM 8L items might just work if they’re reported to be the same size.

Kind regards,

Tom

You could do worse than talk to SGS, they build custom units, Just tell them how much heavier your tailgate is, and they'll do the rest.
Is the Votex spoiler really that much heavier than the standard item, or are they additional?
Also, make sure the spoiler isn't full of water, that's worth a kg or two...

Out of interest, do Votex spoilers fill up too?.
Mac.

My original worn (OEM) struts were fine with the “Votex Style” spoiler. I also had the same experience with my wife’s car, it was fine. If you have weak struts already then they won’t be strong enough, but new OEM ones would be my recommendation.

Perfect Steve,

Just the answer I was looking for. If factory struts worked for them they’ll work for me. New OEM set to be ordered from @CreweAudi.

Kind regards,

Tom

I'll second that. And having had a very solid reproduction Votex spoiler in my hands (heavier than the real thing), there wouldn't be much of a weight difference between a spoiler full of water and a spoiler with Votex on the outside. I don't think it would be that great a percentage of the unsupported weight of the tailgate as a whole in either case though, which is what the struts have to deal with.

The weight difference between the original Votex spoiler and the reproduction is not huge. They are both hollow and foam filled.
there is some difference due to the materials used but that is not much at all.

The Votex spoiler is bonded onto the original spoiler and so it adds weight but they are reasonably light and if your struts are ok then they should take the small extra weight without problems.

Hi all,
I've noticed recently that my boot is getting a bit heavy and the struts don't seem to hold it all the way up any more. So, rather than getting another used pair, I am thinking I will invest in some new ones that may last longer. Does anyone have any recommendations? I've seen some that are a couple of millimetres too long and cause the tailgate to hit on the roof, and obviously, I do not want this from a new strut.
Thanks,

Adam

Bought a pair for £15 from EBay brand new. All good.

SGS are able to refurb your Original gas struts or uprate if you want
Hmm I specifically asked if they refurbish and they said no, they just regas the originals - hence why I didn’t explore any further as I was concerned with my seals being worn.

But when you lift the tailgate and let it go near the top of its travel, does it bang as it hits its upper limit? If not then you have a bargain

Steve B
My original struts (2004) did do the bang thing at the top. The replacements, from SGS do not. 18 months on, they still don't.
