Boot Struts

I am puzzled, a bit, about ordering the A3 stabilus. Will wait to see what our friend here will say and whether they fit or not. Thank you all guys for the information. You are a wild bunch, all of you!!
I want to also share a funny thing happened, while checking the AUDI originals mentioned here. While on AUDI, I saw that the handbrake button is sold for 5 EUROs. I have a long history with that part. I bought a 3Dprinted one from here that unfortunately never fitted. Then, I downloaded the part blueprints and printed one myself, that didn't work either, so you can imagine my excitement. But then, as I was ready to finish the checkout process, I show that shipping this part to Greece is 30 euros! What a lough!!
On another note I am waiting for the delivery of two new alloy caps and a dipstick (all originals), which have been ordered from Germany 5 weeks now. Still, they havent entered the Greek post system. Hopefully, I will receive them soon. Wish me luck guys.
Stavros.

The boot struts arrived today and were a breeze to fit.

@[email protected] Well done for finding a set that satisfy for not much money - I’ve already ordered my genuine set from Audi Tradition for several times the price of yours, I guess I shall have to somehow convince myself it was worth it for genuine originals that might (or might not!) last appreciably longer!

They probably will do fine. There is alot available in the aftermarket branch, but often quality is questionable. This was more or less a test, hence the similar measurements. I also need a second pair for my other A2, so I could buy the ones specifically for the A2 for comparison.

Perfect!!!!

But when you lift the tailgate and let it go near the top of its travel, does it bang as it hits its upper limit? If not then you have a bargain

Steve B

I wasn’t quite sure what you meant here. I went outside and opened the tailgate, raised it approximately half way, released it and it rose to the top of its travel. No bang. So I presume I did get a bargain!

Well in a plot twist: Audi Tradition failed to send Rick my order of the OE struts, so I’ve ordered a set that @[email protected] has!! Comes to about 30 quid. Winner if they work as well as his!

Morning all,

Out of curiosity (and price) I have now ordered the same A3 Boot Struts as Duncan @[email protected] and David @dj_efk. Time will tell if they are strong enough with the addition of the Votex style spoiler. If they're not up to the task then they will be fitted onto a neighbours A3 as his struts are shocking.

Kind regards,

Tom

My thoughts are with out weighing them A3 tailgate Steel/Glass, A2 tailgate aluminium/Glass. That should still make your tailgate lighter with the Vortex style spoiler so should be no issue. I could be proved wrong.

It's not as simple as comparing weights.
Leverage comes into it, when comparing one car (A2) with another (A3).
You need to consider distance between the tailgate hinge line to the strut fixings (both ends), and way that leverage changes as the tailgate moves through it's arc.
Unless the two cars are identical in arc and strut fixings, comparisons are flawed.
To get a quick weight check, a pair of bathroom scales, and a piece of wood, cut to support the tailgate horizontal with the other end on the scales.
More accurate measurements would need a heavy duty spring balance, on the tailgate strut fixing.
Mac.

Maybe, this will help to calculate or at least estimate the compatibility.

G = weight of the boot in kg

L = Distance from the centre gravity point to boot hinge in mm
Advice b = true armlength of the strut in mm, with the boot open.
13 = form factor of kg in N.
P = boot hinge distance approx. 2/3 L select if needed.
n = number of struts (Standard: n = 2)
D = effective leverage arm in mm when boot is open.

Based on the above, I lean towards the struts from VW Passat 3B5. You can choose between 470N and 500N.
I would like it to open on its own after engaging/ actuating the release button of the boot.

Look at the position of the strut, when the tailgate is just unlatched, and you'll see the strut will struggle to move the tailgate on it's own I think.
Mac.

I've done just that. You are probably right . But my curiosity might tick me over and try it anyway?.

Well, I must admit I was a bit worried about my recent purchase, but I'm even more happier than with the a3 8L boot struts.
These have the same dimensions but again with a little more push at 500N. Effortless opening and closing in Aluminium colour
