Changing from rear drums to discs.

Thanks again steve. I may well use it for a while as I love it too

I know I have said it before but that Avatar of yours is PERFECT, it would have looked great on the original sales brochures, absolutely stunning!!! (a little off topic, sorry)

Yes, but the one they have is £185 They sold me mine for £80 never been able to figure out why there is such a big difference!

There's a forum member of the same name. Might be worth a message to back up the offer.

Yes said he's a forum member, had a couple of bits off him (Manhattan$ beat me to the link)

The parts apparently are from "Hilary's" old car has the shell sitting in his garage.

Hi
i had the following response from Prestige.
It looks like he really has been thorough in his checks, he had quoted part numbers etc.

can anyone confirm if there really are two completely different axles based on age?
The comment he makes about there being a couple of parts necessary to fit this to my car seems incorrect because the brake pipes etc don't fit, it is not just the bushes.

I have seen later A2 rear axles and they don't look like this one. (I will have s quick look under the wife's 2004 TDI 90 and see if that is the same as every other rear disc axle it have seen.

There is however 2 different types of axle for the A2 which may well be the issue you are seeing. According to ETKA (Audi Parts Catalogue) the axle changed from Chassis number 8Z-3-000001 which means the axle from our car is the later style (Part number 8Z0500051AB). The earlier style axle fitted up to chassis 8Z-3-000001 is part number 8Z0500053B but the good news is this was dropped in 2008 and replaced with the later one. This is good news because the parts catalogue lists the pieces needed to fit the later axle to the earlier cars (I am assuming here that your car is an earlier one up to 2003?). It shows you needing 2 of 8Z0501541 which is a bonded rubber bush.

One small comment, they mention that the early one was dropped it 2008 (wow A 2008 A2 !!!!)

Before i I tell them they are wrong I would need to be sure and they do sound quite convincing and have obviously checked their facts.

Cheers

Sounds plausible - its possible that even though the Audi A2 wasn't produced after 2005, the parts were continually revised (for example, to address recalls, or consolidation reasons, or simply a slight redesign for improvement, or ease of fitting, or different materials, etc) meaning that if you went to Audi for a rear axle after 2008, you'd get a slightly revised part which needs slightly different bushes. I'd imagine the other parts should bolt onto it though?

ETA: the part number for the bushes they gave, is the same part number as for a 8Z0500053B rear axle - ie it was unchanged. So, now I think you need to go back to your mechanic, or look more closely at the parts you bought, since they should fit the 'newer' axle in theory.

Really you need to get old and new side-by-side to compare the locations of the fittings etc

What's the part number stamped on the actual axle you have?

We know this is still wrong - visually it seems the part you have is for an A3.

That is the problem.

The parts don't fit. As I say even the ABS sensors, brake pipes and the disc back plates don't fit.

These were ordered from Audi and so are the right ones for a disc rear axle.

OK I think the confusion/explanation offered by 3 slight variations on the Audi A2 rear axle and their part numbers, is a bit of a red herring. Essentially, they've (it seems) sent out something that isn't an Audi A2 axle - you really need to get the part number off it, or a side-by-side close comparison with eg an A3 axle (or whatever it is) to show that its not an A2 axle.

I have decided to drop the issue about which axle Prestige sent. It is now almost immaterial.
Whatever happens next I need a matching FSI axle like the one I have placed an offer on.

Perhaps we we can establish the real facts about rear axles for the benefit of anyone who is thinking of doing the conversion. That is important, but my main priority at the moment is to find the right axle and start again.

Thanks to everyone for their input. It does show how some things are not quite as simple as it would seem (if you end up with the later axle for example)

Maybe the " was dropped in 2008" was a typo and should re 2003 as later it says "(I am assuming here that your car is an earlier one up to 2003?). "

Just a thought
