So after buckling a sport wheel I've decided to move to fabled pepperpots. Thought this maybe of interest to anyone wanting to do similar. I'll add photos of the car standard and with pepperpots on to show stance and wheel arches etc. I'm anticipating needing 15mm spacers max but maybe 10mm will be right. I've read on here 20mm caused some people rub.

Weights of wheels
Audi a3 15 inch Pepperpots on winter tyres:
185\60\15 Goodyear ultragrip 8
12.8kg
185\60\15 Bridgestone blizzak lm30 13.4kg
Bare pepperpot wheel
5.9kg

Current oem alloys:
205 40 17 sport 17 whee with tyre 18.6kg

So rough saving of 5kg per wheel. I'll update the post with all round non winter tyres as and when I fit them.

OK, so fitted the wheels in the rain, no spacers just straight swap and popped 32psi front and 30psi rear.

I would say they look okay but will look better with 10 or 15mm spacers to get the original loom, I'll try 15mm next month.

Drive comparisons.
Acceleration feels almost same, not worse, I adapted to it within a few minutes. So that's okay.
Steering felt lighter and slightly more nimble, let's say 10-15% improvement.
Bumps wise it's a large improvement of course, the ride is now like a good modern car, put it this way I'm not dodging any bumps. Infact the oem suspension I have (sport) feels better than before and more composed. A large improvement and I'm very happy with overall effect. Must be getting old!

I’ve got a couple of buckled 17” RS4 replicas on my 75bhp tdi sport and want to switch to something lighter and sturdier. What an absolute minefield!
Best I can gather from various threads is A1 or A3 alloys can fit, 5 x 100 (if you don’t want to get the drill out) ET 32 - 38 might be ok and then of course the tyres need to be certain sizes to avoid problems.
Pepperpots would be my choice if I could find any for sale in good nick for a decent price, but assumed they would bolt straight on without spacers, so watching your endeavors with great interest - good luck!

You'll need to fit a hubcentric spacer or there will be issues with wobble and to be frank they would be dangerous. Hubcentric spacers start at 15mm as far as i'm aware.
 
Whats the benefit to fitting spacers to pepperpots?
To move the wheels outwards to appear more beefy and sporty and help car look more like the original set up in my case. Otherwise no real advantage other than a slight track width increase for handling, marginal though.

10mm hubcentric spacers are available.

Using 15mm spacers on ET38 rims, would change the offset to ET23.

I wouldn't use an offset less than ET28, as going outside the range of offsets that the front steering is designed for creates problems such as dragging the front tyres sideways when turning the steering wheel, bump steer, etc.

185/60R15 tyres on 6Jx15 ET38 rims fills the wheel arches in a very similar way to the standard 175/60R15 tyres on 5.5Jx15 ET34 rims. There's even a standard option of 175/60R15 tyres fitted to 6Jx15 ET37 rims, if your car has build code C3Q.

195/55R15 is a slightly wider alternative that could also be used on pepperpots...and the gearing would stay completely standard.

Indeed you are right


I’d still personally stick with the 15mm as the offset of the pepperpots is far too low for a 6j wheel in mind mind, but each to their own.
 
I’ve used these several times and they suited me. No problems with steering or tyre wear. Plus they are made in the UK.

As included in the kit above as posted by @Cenick the VITAL parts to use are the longer wheel bolts with any spacers. Without them you are in serious trouble....

Either of the two designs of genuine A2 15" alloys are obviously a standard bolt on fitment (one, the more common is 5.5" wide the other rarer 6 spoke design is 6" which is also referred to as 5.5 or 6j) and the Pepperpots which were originally fit to the mk1 A3 are also a straight bolt on no problem fit too and the mention of spacers is only for aesthetic reasons to fill the arches more, also achieved by fitting larger profile tyres which improves the comfort factor further.

Also just to mention, the A2 17" Sport wheels were also shared with the same mk1 A3 with the exact same part number, the only difference being on the A3 they wore larger 225/45 17 tyres which offered the wheels greater protection from kerbs and potholes over the 205/40 size which was reduced to enable them to fit without rubbing on the A2 ?

HI Rob, I guess any 15 inch alloy with a bolt pattern of 5 x 100 (PCD) will fit. The offset is important (ET) the pepperpots are the same ET of 38 as the 17 inch alloys, so fit stright on. THere is an SE alloy like Cennicks post which also fit right on. I only asked around spacers to push the wheel out a bit to fill the arches. You can adjust ET by adding spacers to a point which opens up more after market alloys or indeed VAG group alloys . See the thread on 'definitive alloys' here

Just to add, Cenicks photo above at post #13 is of the original standard fit A2 15" alloy which was also fit to the end of model runout Special Edition models and is the narrower 5.5"wide design i was referring to. The other 15" 6 spoke alloy was a no cost option to the standard 16" 6 spoke alloys on the higher specced SE (Special Equipment) model.

Slightly confusing I know and something that could have been easily avoided by Audi calling the Special Edition anything else?
