Information Changing from sport to pepperpot wheels 90bhp ATL

I also have a set with 2 new tyres and 2 good ones, these were powder coated black but are now silver and I could part with them to lower my wheel count

Edit - I’m not trying to complete with Steve and I’ll add to the market if I decide to sell them here.

Please don't mention 'wheel count' ????

Hi I put my pepperpots on mine today but no spacers I think they lift the car but I think I prefer the sport wheel on your car tbh

A mate of mine has found brand new centre caps for the pepperpots for about £120. He’s ordered me a set. Can give you info if needed

So after buckling a sport wheel I've decided to move to fabled pepperpots. Thought this maybe of interest to anyone wanting to do similar. I'll add photos of the car standard and with pepperpots on to show stance and wheel arches etc. I'm anticipating needing 15mm spacers max but maybe 10mm will be right. I've read on here 20mm caused some people rub.

Weights of wheels
Audi a3 15 inch Pepperpots on winter tyres:
185\60\15 Goodyear ultragrip 8
12.8kg
185\60\15 Bridgestone blizzak lm30 13.4kg
Bare pepperpot wheel
5.9kg

Current oem alloys:
205 40 17 sport 17 whee with tyre 18.6kg

So rough saving of 5kg per wheel. I'll update the post with all round non winter tyres as and when I fit them.

OK, so fitted the wheels in the rain, no spacers just straight swap and popped 32psi front and 30psi rear.

Below is the original set up vs pepperpots.

I would say they look okay but will look better with 10 or 15mm spacers to get the original loom, I'll try 15mm next month.

Drive comparisons.
Acceleration feels almost same, not worse, I adapted to it within a few minutes. So that's okay.
Steering felt lighter and slightly more nimble, let's say 10-15% improvement.
Bumps wise it's a large improvement of course, the ride is now like a good modern car, put it this way I'm not dodging any bumps. Infact the oem suspension I have (sport) feels better than before and more composed. A large improvement and I'm very happy with overall effect. Must be getting old!

Credit to @Cenick who sold me such a greatest of wheels, tha k you Steve, really is a nice chap!
Really glad to hear it feels more nimble and improves ride comfort - I'm looking to do similar by moving away from a set of 17's - Perhaps too early to tell, but have you noticed any difference in fuel economy?

The economy seems the same so far, the thing is im now on winter tyres and its been cold and wet since, so maybe thats a sign its slightly better. I reckon it will be 2mpg better at most. As an overal summary every aspect apart from the aesthetics (pre spacers) are postives ones. Im averaging 57.4mpg with a really well mixed driving route of motorway 50% country lane 25% and town 25% with a cold engine hill for a minute twice a day

Sounds good to me, always good if we can remove a bit of unsprung weight - which is my main goal

Personally, after running Pepperpots with 185/55 winter tires this season, I found them almost too light and floaty, especially on the motorway.
There's little lane stability(? - the opposite of "on rails") and the steering is too light for my taste.

While I suppose they're not a lot worse than my previous winter wheels (see post #9, the 15" OEM ones that are rare in the UK but everywhere in Germany) which were somewhat heavier, the pepperpots also don't much feel like an improvement.

Fuel economy-wise, I'm seeing barely any difference between summer 17s with budget 205s and Pepperpots with brand new Dunlop Winter Responses either. (the latter though might be part of the problem... - though reviewed favourably, they're neither economic nor quiet - they make a right racket, really - so I wouldnt put it past them to fall short in more areas)

Can't wait to swap back to 205 17s for the summer and may well look into different wheel&tyre options for next winter season.

(Mind that this is coming from someone who on a 1.4 was using wheels even heavier than the OEM S-Line/"RS4" wheels, possibly costing them a thousand-euro replacement steering rack ?)

I do like the painted centercaps on the Pepperpots in #1 though, they look a bit more "fresh" to me than the usual dark gray :)

Good to get different opinion, I agree with motorway drifting, road noise too but this is more down to the winter rubber. I think a fair comparison would be to judge them on summer or normal tyres really.

Yep looks there's a lot down to personal preference - I'm on budget 205x17's and ive just today realised how sensitive these cars are to tyre pressures. Turned out my fronts were a little low (only 25ish) - Just gone to 32 all round, as I'm often laden with a full boot, and its transformed the low-mid speed ride quality (always thought it was fine on the motorway) - to the point where I'm now considering keeping pepper pots for winter wheels, and looking for a set of really lightweight 17's for summer/aesthetics.

Bizarre as I thought a slightly softer tyre would help a little and in effect become a third damper. Appeared to have the opposite effect.

Interesting, I used to check mine a lot because of the bumps. Modern 17 from a seat or the audi a3 look good ? personally will keep mine for summer or when if I sell ever. Its just I do 15 miles a day of proper country lanes and it gets tiresome. Now I can have some fun and find the dirt and hang on!

Enjoying the pepperpots on ours too. Unfortunately each tyre on the wheels I bought seems to have a slow puncture, so will need to get that sorted.

Just to add from my POV - I did attempt to add 15mm hub centric spacers onto my pepperpots a couple of years back but one was ripped in half very quickly. I was told this was due to the wheel centre hub having to have an amount of overhang once the spacer was installed - i seem to remember 11mm being mentioned?

Not at all sure if this is true or not but thus far I've only got token 5mm spacers on the back at the moment.

Not quite sure I follow? The spacer or the wheel broke?

These are the standard forged alloys of 175/60/15, almost as comfortable as pepperpots I’d say.View attachment 91609
Funny thing is that this same wheel has been issued for the A3 8L of the era. Difference is the width of 6J (8L) instead of 5,5J (8Z). And the weight of 5,7kg (8L) instead of 6,5 ish kg (8Z) for the original A2 wheel. I have both so can assure they will fit. 👍

I too have a set of the 6" A3 wheel of that type. But I assumed the 6" would be the slightly heavier of the two, compared to the 5.5"?

I’ve got a couple of buckled 17” RS4 replicas on my 75bhp tdi sport and want to switch to something lighter and sturdier. What an absolute minefield!
Best I can gather from various threads is A1 or A3 alloys can fit, 5 x 100 (if you don’t want to get the drill out) ET 32 - 38 might be ok and then of course the tyres need to be certain sizes to avoid problems.
Pepperpots would be my choice if I could find any for sale in good nick for a decent price, but assumed they would bolt straight on without spacers, so watching your endeavors with great interest - good luck!
They do!

Suggestion: Geometry. Ask to have 1 degree toe in added, made a huge difference to my car.
