Check your front suspension arms people

Hello, I read this thread about the control arms not thinking it would affect my A2, but when it went in for recent MOT I asked garage to double check control arms for hidden corrosion just to be sure...... he managed to poke holes through with his fingers and it failed as to dangerous to drive, could have broke at any bump apparently. So glad I read this thread before my next trip from Scotland to Oxford that I do for work, potentially a life saver if the part failed on motorway. Cast iron replacements on order and also I will be doing a complete suspension refurb as per the thread on definitive suspension parts. Thanks for all the great advice here, its invaluable for non-A2 experts like me.

Pedants' corner: they're forged, not cast. :) You'd struggle to get the strength and toughness from a cast component. See below for extract from the Audi workshop manual.

I used a gear puller I had lying around to press the arm out the bush. Nothing too fancy needed, they aren’t really pressed in that stiffly.

I got the Polo tool to do the “Silent Block” for about £40 on eBay too, works a treat.

Rather than reading the entire thread, I hope you won’t mind me asking if anyone has replaced their pressed steel suspension arms (8Z0407153L on a post 2003 car) with pressed steel, what make did you opt for, and would you recommend?

Thank you, Andrew

I fitted forged ones from a 2001 petrol car onto my tdi 90 when I had it and gave it all a good dose of paint for future proofing.

I too replaced my pressed steel arms with forged ones ('54 plate TDi 90).
Pros: not susceptible to rust
Cons: when the ball joint wears out, you have to replace the whole arm instead of just the joint

Some people have replaced their pressed steel arms with new pressed steel arms, but have gone to town on rust-proofing precautions (e.g. powder coating them).

Interesting note: when my son went to buy new ball joints for the pressed steel arms on his '04-plate Seat Leon, he was sold whole new arms; the joints on their own weren't available.

Yer pays yer money etc etc

Hmm, that is the gist I get from the thread: people replacing with forged, hence my question. I know @Skipton01 said he would replaced pressed with pressed; I am wondering whether anyone had actually done it, and which manufacturer product they used.

I recently replaced the pressed arms on my brother lupo, they were £19 each made by a company called ABS must be a quality product!

Update:There appears to be two options on forged arms(other than left and right) I'm still checking though the arms below seem to match the TRW JTC1125 JTC1126 as opposed to the JTC1140 JTC1141. I'll update later once I have better info, sorry.
Just got a 'heads up' regarding QH forged arms on eBay, using code 'PURE20' I bought 2 pairs for £118.22.
Hard to imagine these are the same quality as the TRW/Lemforder units though forged at this price seems to good to pass up, maybe they're cast. ?

Sorry just to confirm...you bought 4 in total enough for 2 cars?

Nice one David. I'll buy these. Sorry to be dense but I'm assuming they are the same for each side?

Edit. When you plug the car type in it tells you it doesn't fit A2. Odd ?

Thanks david that's me ordered a pair up before the well goes dry. I completely plastered e dusting ones in bit hamber ub at the weekend but will have these ready to go in when I get suitably nervous. Might even enquire on powder coating...
