Cruise Control

People have said it's just a case of remove the steering wheel and replace the stalk.

I'm dubious about DIY removal of the steering wheel due to the air bag. What are other peoples opinion on this?

Last week my turningsignals didn't work. They had to replace the emergence switch in the centre, because that's also the relais for the turningsignals, the one that switches them off and on.
And they had to replace the lever itself.
I also have the three spoke sports steering wheel (and I love it) and the leather on it was slightly danaged, but the dealer was kind enough to order a new steering wheel.

So basically they had to remove the entire wheel, the lever and the center emergency switch.

removal of the steering wheel itself is easy. There are screws on the back that will release the front plate. Below the front plate are the screws that will release the steeringwheel. The cables to the wheel can be detached. Once the wheel is removed the lever can be slid out and changed.
I saw them to this and with the ease they did it I don't think that there was any risk in the airbag going off. But maybe we can find a manual somehwere on the internet ??

For the CruiseControl to work you will need the diagnostic module to tell the car the CruiseControl is connected. Something like:

SET CRUISECONTROL=1 :)

So Stuart: are you going to order a stalk from Martyn and be the first guinea pig?

This sounds soooo easy....I can see our social day turning into a 'I'll fit your X if you fit my Y....'

Anyone for a 'group upgrade session' on the day where we can all help fit stuff and we bring our tools?

Hi!

I´d like to get the cruise control (GRA) fitted but my Audi dealer said it was forbidden as to some bad accidents that have occured.

I read in one posting here that it is only the lever that needs to be changed.
The dealers eletrician told me that my Petrol 1.4 2001 had NO cables connected so far and that there a some cables needed from the lever to the main computer.

I like that one. It's absolute bollocks...

The CC resets itself when the contact is turned off. So there's no danger in the car accelerating uncontrollably.

@ Dennis

... i expected that...this dealer fitted a cruise control in my Passat 3B and it worked perfectly... i think they just dont want people to fit that afterwards...

I like a straight talker. :)

I would think so to and if it really is as easy as fitting a new stalk and setting the diagnostics to CRUISECONTROL=1 or whatever then they'd want to keep it a deep dark little secret...

(a little bit off topic...:)

Just reminds me of the story I read on the net some time ago: A guy in the U.S. sued a motor home manufacturer... he bought a new motorhome, went on the highway, set the cruise control for 65 miles, then went back to make himself a cup of coffee....:) The motorhome went of the road and crashed. The guy sued the manufacturer because it doesn´t say in the manual that you can´t leave the driver´s seat when cruise control is on... and got 1.5 million $ and a new motorhome out of it... might be true or not, but funny nontheless....

Bye, Frido.

I don't have time now to search, but go to www.urbanlegends.com to see if it is true or not...

Or try www.snopes.com

As a matter of fact my cc is fitted afterwards. All accessories that are factory fitted are taxed heavily (as are our cars). So the factory fitted cc would cost about 700 Euro's. The dealer immediatly offered to retro fit it do avoid the taxes. There would be a small increase for the working time but now the price was about 350 Euro's.
