Doors Automatically shut!!!!

There is only one microswitch in each door. The signal from each microswitch finds its way to the CCCU, which then triggers the appropriate interior lights to come on, the cluster to display the 'door open' symbol, the B-pillar buttons to become active (only if the driver's door is open), etc. The signal from the switches is also used for the alarm and auto-lock, as these features are governed by the CCCU as well.

And since the switch gives the door open/close signal, it can affect the lights as well. I have proved that when one of my door switch died. Easiest is to plug a diagnostic cable, the fault code will say which door 'won't de-safe'. It is a switch enclosed inside the one-piece door lock mechanism, it has some mechanical linkage to generate a signal and I suspect some dirt has made it stuck. There is no harm in trying some WD40 and work the switch. My other car had the same problem and all i needed was WD40 to loose the dirt (not that I could actually see the dirt nor where that switch was)

What surprises me reading this is that the fire brigade came out to assist, very surprised at that.

Hope you took out breakdown cover after your experience?

I too have had problems caused by the auto lock feature when I didn't realise how it worked. Now I know about it, it's not a problem as long as I remember not to put the keys anywhere except the ignition!

The thing is, you shouldn't have to understand it at all! Audi put a lot of thought into these features to make sure that the car is safe, but without causing inconvenience to the owner. If your experience is that there's a genuine risk that your car will lock its own keys inside, it's because the car has a fault.

The fire brigade had no involvement in my wife's recent discovery of the auto-lock feature. Brittania Rescue solved the problem very quickly.

So, there is only one switch per door. All the other functions (see above) controlled by these switches work perfectly. So how did the keys get locked in the car

Yep. Same for the other doors too.

Hmmm, strange. It might be worth trying the auto-relock again to see if it is still happening (i.e., unlock the car with the remote, open the drivers door then shut it again, and wait. If it relocks after a minute then the problem still exists). If the microswitch is OK but the door relocks then the CCU is possibly suspect? Unless anyone has any more ideas?

If it does not auto-relock then perhaps it was an intermittent problem caused by dirt on the microswitch contact as humps suggests.

Spot on, Mike. My thoughts precisely.

Nothing to do with this but a good story none the less, when Ford first released the Focus with the keyless entry one of our inspectors was at ford for the release and they was banging on about not being able to lock the keys in the car as it would recognise the key still in the car and not lock. So this inspector throught lets see so got the keys put them in the boot pressed lock and then shut the boot guess what happened ??????????? oh yes the cars lights flashed and the doors locked its the typical promo mistake OOP's forgot to program that feature up and test it before letting people loose on it LOL

Back on subject i'm with the others and probably an intermittent fault, my rear passenger door is playing up it locks and unlocks perfect but the interior light doesn't work when door is opened so there for if i unlock the car open that door it will lock itself if another door isnt opened. Just had a thought try opening one door at a time and then press lock while the door is open to see if it locks, all passenger doors will lock but not arm untill closed but the drivers one should not lock of that door is open
