Sorry to gloat but I thought I would let you all know about the paradise that I live in.

My 6 yr old walks to school and back, my car has had the keys in the ignition at home for years and house prices are 60% or less than English towns sure we have a 6 month winter 5 month spring and 1 month autumn, the temperature rarely gets above 18oc and our services are simple but adequate but that's the price you pay.

Our local paper has headlines this week about our population loss. It could be just 17,000 in the islands by 2016 down from 19,500 so I suppose we have some spare space for any enlightened immigrants.

Torquil,

That’s good news, so I have just proposed the Orkney Island’s for 20,000 Kurd asylum seekers. These of course are generally 20/30 year old men, so give them a couple of years and your population could increase by a very healthy 80,000.

I am of course presuming that your island has some top quality hotels, because lack of “en suite” facilities can be viewed as an extreme racist provision.

According to an article in the Mirror newspaper yesterday immigrants actually “subsidise” the indigenous Brits, so when the Kurd’s arrive don’t forget to ask them to have a whip round to get you a leather interior for your A2.

Anyway, don’t ever dare say that I never helped you.

Petrol/Diesel consumption should (logically) be quoted in amount used per distance travelled. Hence gallons per mile or litres per Km.
Unfortunately most people couldn't cope with decimal fractions of a gallon hence the reversal,I suppose, or did it come from furlongs per nosebag of straw?
The metric users amongst us are more correct in quoting L/100Km.
Sorry guys, but I'm a scientist so had units drummed into me at school and university!
