Thanks Keith. I googled Krytox and the VW little bottle that came up is the same stuff my old neighbour put on his EOS roof. The VW bottle only states "special lubricant" with no mention of Krytox or DuPont...

Not surprised this stuff that @audifan pictured is coming up. Krytox and similar products are perfluoridated oils, used for the EPDM rubber seals on many convertibles where silicone would swell them and affect the water-tightness of the roof. My Volvo C70 uses it too. Volvo similarly have their own little bottle that's even more outrageously priced than DuPont's.

Hi Audifan,
Found this seller on the bay lastnight (no connection with seller)
(metrropolis) have a look on his site
Hope that helps.
Keith .

From the OSS parts listing, grease for the mechanism is G060751A2
It's a thick paste and does not seem very 'greasy' Only advantage may be that grit / dust does not mix with it as easily

For the seals, in the shop manual, Audi specify what seems to be Krytox grease rather than the liquid form used on the EOS roof.

Cheers Spike

Hi Keith

Found this thread on the treatment of VW EOS roof seals (Post 5) and it says GPL 205 is a paste version of the liquid so it should be perfect

I bought the official Audi stuff many years ago and it's a grey colour - possibly so it does not show on the black seals if over treated.
I would not recommend it. Even on a hot day its really difficult it work into the seals so GPL 205 may be the best option.

This is a link to the main distributor of Krytox.
The VW forum mentioned a minimum spend (was £30) so if the interest is there, a group buy may be something to consider

Multipurpose Lithium grease from tool station .cheap but exellent .opens better than a new brides nighty .

Should be used on the mechanical parts only NOT on the rubber seals
The seals is where the krytox comes into play. Krytox is a lubricant for rubber commonly used on all convertibles to keep the rubber seals supple, it is bloody expensive stuff anywhere and the main dealers then package it and add their markup so not unusual to get upwards for £50 to £70 for a small tube or bottle

There was a seller on eBay who sold it in liquid form I bought some about 8 years ago for the seals on my focus CC3. It’s great stuff
I’ve noticed his prices have gone from £22 when I bought mine to £48 now
However a little goes a long way. I still have some of the small bottle I bought 8 years ago left
Gummy pledge appears to do the same job and is much much cheaper. All of the focus cc guys rave about it and other convertible forums

I think the names converts into rubber care from memory

Where do you grease the OSS and what is the best method? Have searched the site and there seems to be conflicting opinions on how to apply lithium grease, spray it on? Brush it on? Also the original guide has lost its media:(. Can anyone help?

Ref post 4 of this thread, KP115 found an ebay seller for Krytox grease and oil who repackages it in small tubs.
This is a link to the GPL 205 g2 grease but there are other grades available so it could be worth asking which is best for the roof seals

Cheers Spike

PS as with all on-line sales you are never quite sure if the product is genuine but at the price it could be worth the slight risk

Perflouro's are so-called "forever chemicals" iirc?

When talking about OSS lubricants, do you mean for the cables, slides/trucks or the weather seals?

Hi Spike,
Just received an offer from the seller of 18% off after I put it in my watched list last week, so I've ordered the oil & the grease for our R line Tiguan panoramic roof & will report back.

Hi Keith

RE reading the link about treating EOS roof seals, for the Krytox to be most effective it's important to thoroughly clean them first - and recommend IMS solvent (industrial methylated spirit) for the job

This is an extract from the article -

Key considerations

- seal material needs to be squeaky clean before application of Krytox - free of body wax, silicone etc. We use IMS as a solvent for achieving this.
- application amounts need to be minimal - avoid temptation to overapply. Be cautious of contamination onto unwanted areas such as glass and paint (very difficult to remove!!)
- the applicator bottle is quite convenient, although I find fingers the best method to apply the product. Can work well into the seals, and get into the nooks and crannies which are guaranteed to be the source of noise. Krytox is a very safe and inert material (both to operator and substrate) - does not cause seal swell or cracking.

Cheers Spike
