If there was a fault with a cylinder or an injector you would surely notice, how does the engine run because an injector would probably change the running of the engine for the worse

Chris

More likely the loom, a common part to replace on pd engines - I've done it to two of my Passats - £60-ish for the part as a guesstimate so not too bad:)

it runs fine - i have twice, notices a misfire, normally when i just drive it for a mile or 2, then stop the engine, then go again - ie school run type driving. but as i say that has only occured twice. and it managed 107bhp on the stealth rolling road, so it must be running on all 3!!

John

Oh well a misfire does indicate somethings not right but it was obviously on all 3 when on the rolling road! how are you finding your new fully specced car?

Chris

@John I was going to post earlier that perhaps there was a low level fault with your car but I lost connection and it didn't post!

Anyway, if you've got a misfire going on, I would bet money on it being the injector wiring harness (aka loom). I had this on mine last year and it's a reasonably straightforward job, certainly DIY if you fancy it. The parts are not massively pricey either.

You might find also that perhaps your thermostat and/ or temperature sender could be on the way out - do you find the car struggles to reach operating temperature as indicated on the gauge? Again I had this last year, it wouldn't hit 90 (although at the time I thought it was just because of the cold weather) but my economy was in the low 40s. I'm averaging just over 60mpg these days and that's with the odd bit of 70-80mph on the m-way and a reasonable dose of urban plugging.

@adrian

thanks, that sounds the problem, yes it does stuggle to get up to 90degC. it does eventually then drops back intermitantly. so as you say, it sounds like a duff thermostat? - i know its a easy job on a lot of cars - but where does it live on a A2:confused::confused: - would that make it more thirsty then? - i suppose its putting the choke back on is it - in only pre injection days?

with regards the harness is it a complete harness for the 3 cylinders, you say its a diy job - but is it with someone with a dodgy left hand:eek:

@adrian

hi, adrian

its going in to audi4u (my local indepandant), tommorw. FYI i just took it for a 30 mile round trip, down the motorway and back, at a indicated 70mpg, which is 2200rpm. i had my kiwi obd monitor plugged in via my iphone, using fuzzycar app.

the temp rose steadily from cold, to 82deg C. but the temp display on the car remained at zero - so the sender unit is knackered. it returned 54mpg according to the dis - the outside temp was 18deg c. and cos it was a return journey any effect of wind and hill would be negated.

i have asked them to change the wiring harness, and the temp sender and check the thermostat - but it looks like the thermostat is ok - mind you 82 is a bit low is'nt it?

John

As the main temp sender is not working correctly, I'm not sure where your OBD scanner is picking up the signal from. If its around the radiator then the coolant will be much colder than indicated by the main sender on the back of the cyl head

Cheers Spike

Thanks Spike, im not sure where the obd port takes the reading from, but i guess the fact the temp rose steadily from cold to a peak of 82 at least indicates the thermostat is working as it should. so it looks like its just the temp sender.

that does not tell me why im gettign crap mpg though:confused: or is 54 at 70mph ok?

John

I just came back from a 125 mile journey and used 1/4 of a tank and averaged 61.2 mpg but i was going at 60-80 mph and averaged 71 mph on the motorway but i guess 54 mpg is fine, it depends on so much hills, driver, temperature etc

Chris

@dab_b

where do you get the aero mods? and what are they?

and what tyres do you have - size too

what mpg do you get at a decent speed - not granny in a funeral procession;)

John

I tipped 62mpg on the last tank (brim to brim) and on that one I didn't go over 70mph and tried to stick to 60-65mph.

By comparison this summer I was in France though with a fully loaded car (4 passengers plus luggage), air-con on and driving at 80-85mph and I got 53mpg from a 1600mile round trip which I thought was pretty good given the load on the car!

I have 195/50/16 tyres which are Hankook Ventus Prime K105s - they were reviewed as being very good on rolling resistance (2nd only to the Michelin Energy Saver tyre in the group test) but at nothing like the cost! You can't get them now though.

I've also been experimenting with more conscious use of rolling and engine braking to provoke fuel cut-off mode (so basically reading the road ahead better and coming off throttle much earlier than I would before and just letting the car slow down under its own friction through the gears).

On our recent trip to Whitby, Tank averaged 62.6mpg which I'm happy with, bearing the weight in mind (no, not of the driver, but with all the options fitted).

It was a journey consisting of M62, M1, A64, A169, A171 and there was a bit of fun on the North York moors by Fylingdales(!), but speeds were around 70 up to York, then 60-ish from there to Whitby.

Tank has some of the aero kit, but not the central tunnel panel, as the exhaust won't allow. However, with 205-section tyres, I think this figure is pretty reasonable.

I've found that it is really hard to do the hyper-mile techniques like coasting and to be frank, in modern-day traffic, it can be dangerous too. With more effort, I'm sure I could get this up to 66-70mpg on narrower tyres.

Cheers,

Mike

I'm still keen on the idea of the 1.6FSI rear tailgate and a rear flat floor panel too, but the former is seemingly impossible to find to buy and the latter is seemingly impossible to find the time to do!

It is at the moment for me Dan - I do still want to get the floor panel sorted out though, it's really a matter of getting the time (and a big piece of ally!) to have a play.

Maybe in the new year - there's certainly no chance in 2010!!

Cheers

Thanks for all the replies Guys

i dont think mine is too far off the mark then 54mpg at 70 is not too bad, but the intermitant misfire might be dragging it down a little - so the injector harness is being changed today, so lets see - im off to john ratcliff hospital in oxford on sunday, so that will be a good run to test it - i will try and stick to 70 and see what we get.

Forgot about having the aero mods on mine :eek: and low rolling resistance tyres (Goodyear Efficient Grip which have had excellent reviews):eek::eek:

Since coming back from Germany my car is running better than ever and showing hardly any smoke on hard acceleration. Maybe your car simply needs a good 'hard' ;) drive ?!
