Group buy / order: 0.65 / 0.643 5th for TDI

adrian

yes, will give it a thrash when i go to oxford on sunday. its only 125 miles each way, but at least it will get nice and hot over that distance - its having the new injector harness fitted today, and a new temp sender, so lets see if that improves things, i would be happy if i could get 50-55 at 80mph, dont like sitting at 70!!

John

Thanks Spike, im not sure where the obd port takes the reading from, but i guess the fact the temp rose steadily from cold to a peak of 82 at least indicates the thermostat is working as it should. so it looks like its just the temp sender.

that does not tell me why im gettign crap mpg though:confused: or is 54 at 70mph ok?

John

Hang on John - does your temp not get above 82 even on a "run"? In which case it's possible the stat isn't operating fully and this could lose you some mpgs. Maybe get it changed as well when you get the temp sender done, they're not expensive and it's an easy job on the TDi.

@dab_b

the temp was recorded using my kiwi wifi obd scanner thing, via my iphone, when the temp sender unit was working admit intermittantly, it was recording 90, but this just demonstrates the courseness of these gauges.

i will give it a scan on a long journey, to see what happens.

5th gear mod

I went over last week to have Mike fit the 0.659, a journey from my front door to his back gate of around 300 miles.

I have recently put the winter wheels on my car and previous mpg sees it around the 55/56 mpg mark. They are narrower tyres but I believe the softer compound drops 3-4 mpg.

I filled the car at a Shell station at Ellesmere Port the night before I returned with their ordinary diesel and drove the 5 miles to Costco on local roads. Then it was off to Holyhead where I kept the car on cruise control (previously fitted at Skipton Autos) around 63/64mph for the 82 miles. Then the 160 miles from Dublin to Coleraine around the 70mph mark for a total of 250.5 miles. DIS showed 60mpg. Since then it has only been local trips and the mpg has dropped to 59, still way above what I usually get.

As with cruise control, don't dither on this. Distance is no excuse!
Book an appointment with Mike and get the work done. He is, as has been posted on here many times, a decent chap and you always come away learning something new. This time I learnt to flick the lights on to get a quick read of the miles on the speedo, rather than turn the key. Makes sense when you think about it!

Mike also completed an oil change which I photographed and I hope that Ben will be able to use to produce another excellent How To... .

I also learnt that you can fit a new 27 inch imac in the back seat along with 4 packs of rubber garage flooring and a large rolling holdall!

For those in the market for replacing their rear window treatment Costco are currently selling a 4 pack of Aquapel for around £14. I bought 3 packs and have re-treated all the glass on the car using three applicators.

I'll keep the club updated over the next few months on the mpg (all logged in an iphone app).

Many thanks to Mike.

Cheers

Today it was my turn to have the 5th gear modification work completed by Mike, (in conjunction with one or two other bits of "fettling"), and it is fair to say that I am exceptionally pleased with the result.

My journey down the M1 to Mike's saw a return of approximately 49 mpg at a speed of 70-75 mph for the most part. With the gearing expertly installed I witnessed an instant gain of 53 mpg at 75-80 mph on my return home. For my remapped TDI, (whilst not spectacular), this is such a transformation in economy and will be more-so with a lighter right foot. I noted that the longer 5th gear offered almost 400 rpm improvement over the standard arrangement.

Standard:
70 mph @ 2600 rpm
75 mph @ 2800 rpm
80 mph @ 3000 rpm

New longer gearing
70 mph @ 2200 rpm
75 mph @ 2400 rpm
80 mph @ 2600 rpm

The new 5th gear can be selected at 40 mph on a level road without unduly distracting from throttle delivery; though acceleration is obviously not as brisk as with the standard arrangement. Where the gearing comes into its own is in making for a much more relaxed, refined and quieter cruise. The A2 almost feels more grown up and behaves impeccably on the motorway and fast A roads. Without a shadow this is a fantastic modification and is a fitting addition that befits any TDI (more-so a remapped model with increased torque and drivability).

I would also like to offer forward my sincere thanks to Mike for performing the modification with surgeon like precision and with a knowledge, passion and conviction befitting the gentleman that he is. Mike's knowledge, love for the A2 and that of the club and it's members is second to none and his unselfish attitude to the cause deserves recognition.

Thanks very much indeed Mike; despite the flu recovery making for a torrid time, today was a pleasure indeed.

Darren

Glad you like Darren - good to see you again, even if you were full of man-flu!

Did you manage to get that gearstick gaiter back on again??

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks Mike and likewise good to see yourself and Ange.

The gaiter was secured before we went for the drive into town buddy; let's just say that I wouldn't make for an F1 pit crew member though eh? ;)

Thanks very much again.

Darren

I'm due for the 5th gear replacement at 10am tomorrow morning. If I wasn't already looking forward to the change, then I certainly am now after the last couple of posts. Mike's also fitting cruise, so my motorway mpg should certainly go up a few knotches.
Despite being relatively new here, from everything I've seen, I can only reiterate Darren's words. I'm sure a lot of us spend less time than members of other car clubs dreaming about all the things we'd like to have upgraded on our cars or perhaps worrying about all the things that could go wrong and the associated costs ...because this club's got Mike.

Awww, stop it - I'm blushing!!

If I can help out members to get their little A2s to be as good as they can be and maximise efficiency too, then brilliant - I'll keep on supporting you all as long as you want me to.

I'm not planning on leaving A2 ownership behind anytime soon, and as my personal mods are now drastically slowing down, it gives everyone else a chance to catch up!

This voluntary work is getting a bit hard to fit in at the moment, with my day job taking up too much of my time as some of you might have found when trying to book a slot, but I'll be here after Corrie has had its celebrations I'm sure!

See you in the morning Tom - mind the fence on your way down the back!!

Cheers,

Mike

I've just returned from Skipton Autos with cruise control and a longer 5th gear. The drive back on the motorway was effortless. The car coasts along at 70 with much reduced noise. It's excellent!
Mike also realligned my gears - which makes the changes significantly smoother - and also filled my gearbox with bluemotion oil, which can only help the mpgs!

I learnt so much today, too. Mike is seemingly happy for one to look over his shoulder and constantly ask questions!

A massive thank you.

Tom

Ah, you had the same done as me when i saw mike, the drive back is so much nicer!! the cruise is great, i use it all the time now when my right foot gets a little tired! the gearing is also great and someone who i was driving with asked me why i was going so slow on the motorway when i was doing 90!!!! it fooled them

Chris

Tom, you're very welcome and yes, I do like members to take an active interest in their little cars - the more you know, the more interesting ownership can be.

@Chris - you were doing 90 on a private road I take it???!!! ;)

Cheers,

Mike

Well at this point i would like to say that i was on a private test track and that a trained professional was driving the vehicle but that was not the case!! the car is so quiet it is easy to slip up to these speeds but the scangauge only showed 86mph so it wasnt that bad!!! i am sure you can understand mike with your near 130hp TDI!

Chris

Oh, absolutely! It's easy to think you're going much slower than you are because the engine noise almost isn't there.

Yes, I'm not having a go Chris - just that it's sometimes best not to openly admit to that sort of speed on the UK roads - you never know who's listening, in these Big Brother times we live!!

I agree, until you get used to the new, quieter ride with the taller 5th gear, you can easily find yourself doing more than you thought you were.

Cheers,

Mike

hi Everybody
i m from belgium, just own my 2nd A2 Tdi90 '05 my 1st one was 90 '04 too but this one has opensky... (open only on high but not on rear) but love this car

i read a lot of pages of this thread and like this mod of 5th gear i m also ready to sell mine to 75ower but found the kit a little expensive (over 200)
and want to thanks all the contributor like skipton and other for all this great job

Are the 0.659 upgrades still being done?

I've always wished my TDi 75 (Stealth Remap) had a sixth gear to avoid that awful 3000+ rpm drone at motorway speeds. Then I happened to see this thread and I think I've found exactly what I've been looking for.

Are these upgrades to the 0.659 module still happening as the thread seemed to tail off in late 2010? If they are, how much are we talking for:
a. The parts for the job so my friendly local VAG mechanic can do it
b. The Skipton service to fit the parts that so many people have been so pleased with?

I've already sent Skipton a PM about this the other day but I haven't had a reply as yet so I thought I'd ask here in the mean time to get some idea on the current cost/availability.

Cheers for your time
Dave

It is worth getting done as you said just the thing for those long motorway journeys:D

I think there is at least one member who has his local vag specialist fit it for him.
Mike skipton will be able to help you out. He gets a awful lot of pm's so bear with him, I am sure he will get back to you. He has his day job and will be looking after Angie after doing a Roony.

Cheers

David

Cheers for the replies. How much did the 0.659 gear "kit" cost then? I think I'll get my local garage to fit them to save Skipton doing it as he seems to have his hands full at the moment ;)

Cheers
Dave
