Group buy / order: 0.65 / 0.643 5th for TDI

Depends when you want them. If Robin can bring them back to the UK, then it's peanuts. If you want / need them sooner, it'll be probably €10 or so. Depends on the weight.

don't know. For the 12 sets it shouldn't be too difficult.... he says. I have to think it through. PP might be the best way, though I'd have to check my limits.

Bret

I'm still definitely in at that price, although if we can bring them back without shipping cost that would be even better :)

This is definitely a 2010 project for me.

price just suggested by Rosenkranz is €120+VAT + shipping. That's around £107+VAT@19% + shipping.

Thoughts on this price? It's around a 10% discount.

Where will these kits be coming from Bretti? UK VAT will rise to 17.5% on 1st January, so it'll probably be cheaper to pay tax at source - shouldn't be a problem as it's all staying inside the EU.

A little more discount wouldn't go amiss - 10% is pretty much nothing on an order that will be well in excess of €1000!!

Cheers,

Mike

This would be part of an order going in from the German side, too. There's a big Gearbox meet going on in München in Feb and several sets will be installed at that point, if I've understood correctly.

Which also means there should be some good guidance on exactly how to do this, too.

Mike even with the hike in Vat on Jan 1, the UK still has one of the lowest VAT rates in Europe (for the moment!), so the correct way to do it is to import the goods to the UK, so you pay no VAT to the exporter but pay Vat when it arrives in the UK - only a saving of 1.5% but still a saving.

I have to say i am tempted as we will be using the car for long distance travel but has anyone done any accurate projections on fuel savings?? I am afraid my maths is not up to it.

Well in 5th you're looking at around a 15% reduction in cruising RPM for any given speed.
Let's say that translates into a 5-10% improvement in fuel economy, then it will take a while for it to become "economically justifiable", but you also need to factor in the reduction in noise and vibration levels that will come with a lower engine RPM on the motorway.

For me it's about the combination of those two things and worth paying for. If I can get a smoother quieter drive on the motorway whilst hiking my average fuel economy over the 50MPG mark I'll be happy.

I am similar to Dan with my reasons, except i am hoping combined with some Aero bits to lift consumption to +60mpg.... about 60% of driving is motorway so hopefully is 'do-able'.

Thanks for the replies. So far, the higher revs when cruising at 70/80 are not a problem (maybe the onset of old age and defective hearing). However I haven't really gone on what I would call a long trip yet, so I am undecided. However a long trip is imminent (see seperate post), so if you can wait until Jan 3rd before ordering I may well be interested.

I was looking into this yesterday, for the 1.6fsi at least, the max you could probably comfortably go is 0.74 any higher than this and you would experience to much of a drop out from changing from 4th to 5th.

Not really sure/understand how this all properly works/translates but the 1.6fsi has a 'gsk' gearbox which is essentially a polo one and if you look at vag 5th gear cogs and ratios this is I think the highest they have within the vag range, therefore probably more of a viable option if considering?!?

This would save on revs and increase fuel economy.

Not 100% sure on the 1.4 petrol version, but would imagine maybe look at what options Vag have on the gear box selection already within their range???

With this new gearset, what would the lowest speed you can comfortably chug along in in 5th? With the current gears, 35mph is doable in 5th if you're not needing to accelerate at all.

Any further developments or news on this mod?
Humpy is on 70k miles and iv'e decided to replace the gearbox oil and wanted to carry out this mod beforhand.

I will be back in touch with the company at teh beginning of next week. Right now we're on 15 sets, I think, and I want some accurate information about the return of old parts.

Bret

Hi - I'm definatly interested in this buy - am I correct in understanding the price to be around £120 after import/VAT and after returning the old cogs?

I'm still in. If we're up to 15 or so any chance that price might come down further?
