Heated Seats

Thanks for the picture :)
I think I still prefer to try to source a 2nd hand climate control unit with switches for the heated seats, and then sell my climate control unit without switches.
Here are the pictures of the aforementioned 2001 Audi A3 climate control unit :
Do you think it's the same as in the A2 ? To me it looks like....

There may be electrical differences that are not obvious, so one solution would be to remove the faceplate from the A3 unit and put it into the A2, as the buttons are in the right place.

You'll need a tiny T8 torx driver to do this and be careful.

Cheers,

Mike

Well, I bought a 2nd hand complete climate control unit with the rotary switches. I will first fit it, and in a few month, I will undertake the big part of the job (putting the heating elements in the seats).
Question : how do I remove this unit ?
First, the surround of the cubby hole, and then it just slides ?

It is easiest if you remove the radio and then push the climate panel from the back. As you have the replacement unit, you will be able to see the positioning of the 4 retaining clips.

Cheers,

Mike

Be careful because it has a nasty habit of coming out with the speed of a bullet once the clips let go :)

The older seat covers: They only have heater elements when ordered. The new cover version: There are always the heater elements in there. For the new version, they are sewed in the cover. The old version has them on the cushon.

Hi erstens,
Do you know what year the new seat covers started being fitted?
How can you tell if you have the elements without removing the cover?

Thanks,

Robbie

Other members may confirm this but I think I read original equipment (leather) seat covers either had the wires snipped off or did not have the element fitted unless heated seats were specified.

Cheers Spike

Correct Spike - you can only buy leather covers with the heater element pre-attached, so I assumed that the element would be there on Tank (even though I didn't spec heated seats at the time of ordering) and so I was just going to re-attach the wires.

But, from the factory, if heat wasn;t specc'ed, then covers came without elements.

So, if you already have leather, but no heat, you'll have to get elements from something like a TT as A2 elements are not available on their own.

So, if I was considering having a leather re-trim and wanted to have heating elements installed at the same time, would Audi not be able to sell them to me without me buying Audi leather with the elements attached?
I've been under the impression that a 3rd party re-trim would be cheaper than going down the Audi route, but when heating is taken into account, perhaps not?

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Tom

Well, dealerships can sell you the front leather covers, with heater elements included, but they're around £400 per seat (maybe even up to £500 each now).

So, that's £800-1000 just for fronts, then add on the rears and you're looking at around £1500 just in parts!

So, I'd get the TT Mk1 heater elements, which are available separately and fit without modification, and have the upholsterer slip 'em in when they're doing the re-trim.

Cheers,

Mike

Excellent; the TT elements will fit without modification. Thanks for clearing that up, Mike.

Mike,

Posts 24/25 suggest that the 2001 A3 climate control bezel with the heated front seat controls is the same as the A2 one. Can you confirm if you know this to be fact, as the post doesn’t elaborate if fbi had total success with this.

Cheers

Jeff

No, the buttons are the same, but the layout is different and you'll need to dismantle the A3 one.

Cheers,

mike

Hi,
Does anyone know the price of the heated elements that would fit ie the TT one's from the dealers or is there anywhere else to buy? If the car has leather seats from factory will there be any wiring already in or does this also have to be fitted aswell? I understand that the climate control fascia cover can just be swapped with that from a unit that has the heated seats as factory?

Thanks

Rob.

Depends on the age:
The old version has the heating elements seperately from the seat cover. The later version and the spare parts you can order have the heating already sewed to the covers!
So there is a small chance to have an A2 without seat heating but with the elements installes.
Only a small chance.

Don't suppose you know when they changed from the old to the new version? The car I would be fitting is an early 2003 with leather. Thanks Rob.

^^^ That's the kit I've got. There's info on the German site for connecting to the factory switches as well for an oem finish. Another job for the summer....

Ahh rite, that looks good. I'll have to try and find the thread about connecting them for an OEM finish as that would be good. I can't seem to find the pricing information the links to dealer information seem to be broken. Can you remember the price?

Cheers Rob.
