Help required please ! Failed to get to 200k club ?

Morning thanks for the heads up , the replacement of the chain and tensor was on my “to do list “ , looks like it’s moved upwards rather sooner ....

Timing belt drives cam and water pump.
Chain drives balancer shaft and oil pump.

I didn’t check the links above so this may already have been referenced:

Hi , I read this while sitting on the side of the M40,waiting for the big truck with the flashing lights
It’s very detailed , and informative, it’s also confirm that my current skills , and time availability would not be able to proved the required outcome , so the car is off to WOM for sump off and investigations works

I am waiting the findings before deciding what to do ,A get them to fix the engine , B , pull engine out off car and fix on a engine stand ,C obtain, 2nd ha d engine and swap over .D give up and have a little sob in the corner for a couple of days .....

So here the update

The photos show a sorry tail ....

What your looking at is a failed crankshaft....

This leading to the lack of oil pressure, and rattling noise ,oil pressure warning light and exit stage left .... how this failed to lob a Conrod out the side of block is wholly amazing

So new block ,while the engine is on the floor , do we add myp gear box , get rid of egr cooler , replace turbo , this is a big bill so rather keen to nail all the options while the car is at Wom ...

So A2 fans , your thoughts !!!!

Get a used engine rather than fix your broken one. My understanding is a Polo AMF will fit providing manifolds are swapped over.
A number of members have done this job so I’m sure advice based on experience will be posted soon.

Hi mine the ATL engine , 90 bhp , which runs a lower compression..... help !!!

oof. So what do you want to do? Replace the engine? ATLs are not common IIRC... you may have better luck asking over on the German forum. The 1.9 doesn't fit easily, though it has been done. But I suspect that a complete car will be cheaper than an engine swap.

Morning A2 world

Update on my ATL snapped crankshaft at 173K miles

"Basil " , is now fully striped and awaiting a brand new short engine , which comes with new oil pump , chain , sump , crank, conrods , big end shells etc , in short all the internal bits from the head gasket down , including all the required seals , gaskets etc to swap over the retained parts of the failed engine .

Having priced up a couple of 2nd hand engines , or refurbished offers , this rather large outlay , saves a massive amount in labour and removes a lot of risk , by using AUDI parts , given the total bill for the works , and a lack of low mileage engines , I felt this was the best way forward for "Basil" the down side is that I have had to promise the wife , "I will not buy any more cars for 5 years" please see terms and conditions for further information...……if in any doubt " don't buy any other cars end off"
I will also know fully the history of the engine , in full detail down to the last nut and bolt , and gain a 12 month on the bulk of the new bits fitted.

The rest oily bits .

The cylinder head is getting a refresh , the turbo while off the car is being reconditioned , along with new feed and return oil pipe lines , the DMF looks to be good, along with the friction plate .
EGR is getting blanked off , and mapped out , fully cleaned out
New water pump and cam belt , plus the tensor are being fitted back on . The a/c condenser is shot so that getting replaced while its off the car.

While the car is truly in a million bits , mostly on the floor at WOM autos , I am looking a gear box options, the MPY 6 speed appears to be the way forward , but comes at a cost , plus rather rare ….any thought or leads to tracking down a good MYP gear box ?

So the new block turns up next week , turbo around 2 weeks , the car should be back on the road for early Nov fingers crossed if I can track down a suitable gear box in the next 14 days

My journey to owning "Basil " my 90 TDI has been nearly 10 years in the making , with more than a couple of twists along the way , its therefore going to remain in my ownership for the next 10 years ,

I am looking forward to the car coming back , with a mostly brand spanking new engine , 6 speed gear box and working A/C

Further updated to follow !!

Sorry I misinterpreted an earlier post. ATLs are quite rare.
Is it possible to convert to AMF?

I am sure it is possible , but the costs involved, plus the risk out way the rewards , I always wanted a 90 bhp TDI , from late 2004 , and final achieved this goal in May , so regardless of cost , this car is getting rebuilt to the best of my , and WOM autos ability's . Thanks for the heads up , its has all formed part of the decision making process .

there are a couple of ATLs on Ebay - one very expensive in spain, then this one in Redcar

Hi Robin , I looked a more than a couple of ways forward here , but they all carry a rather large risk , IE what has happened to the engine , service history, driver abuse etc , so I have gone down the route of a brand new short engine via AUDI , the costs , was finely balanced on the new short engine route , but the rewards and lack of risk over the next 10 years for the car,far out way the £500.00ish cost saving via the 2nd hand route , again noting the crank shaft failing is looking to be a major killer of ATL engines , along with oil pump chains focuses the mind when paying a 3rd party for the works of installing a 2nd hand engine , I really don't fancy "fingers crossed " its all going to be OK when spending the sort of cash , that I could have used to by 2 fairly tidy 75 bhp TDIs

Tanks for the heads up !

Hi Robin

I looked at the engine , on ebay in spain , and it was on the table for shipping over , however spending £1500.00 on a unseen engine which turns up on a pallet from e bay was a little to high risk for this rebuild

regards Mark

No problem at all - I have no interest in any of the engines out there but hoped that something might be suitable. Apologies for delay in response - I was out of the country for 4 days.

I am very impressed that significant components of legacy model Audi engines are still available new - how did you source these? I've been looking at low-ish mileage refurbished MYP and related gearboxes online myself (there's one place just off the M5 in Birmingham that sounds possible) and they all seem to be around the £500 mark - but whether they'd be suitable is a different question.

Hi robin ,a sorry for the delay in replying , I have had my hands rather full with work projects , and arrangements for BASILS repairs , a 2nd hand MYP gear box has been optained and is being fitted by WOM , fingers crossed it works... I did try the reconditioned route , via the Birmingham compony , but it’s only available if you have a suitable gear box to start off with , hence lobbing my EBay purchased gear box into the car , suck it and see it ....
the short engine is still listed as a current stock part , so readily obtainable....

Sounds like a great project - will you have a build thread (assuming you have time!) - thanks again for your comments and thoughts.
