How do you remove the open sky blinds?

I have the blind in the winter when it's cold and remove it for the summer. However, I will be adding 95% removal film to the inside as it's too bright for my offspring.

For me it's just the opposite. I have it removed but I may consider refitting it in the summer if the sunrays are too aggressive (I also have a baby).
I did already experience last summer without blind and it was OK.
But now I have to look at fixing my OpenSky as it doesn't open 100% anymore. Fortunately it closes fully although the "anchors" don't engage fully.

I took the blind out from my open sky the other day. So far I'm really happy with the result. If it comes to the summer and the sun starts to aggravate me then I'll just put it back in. I needed to take it out to lubricate all of the seals anyway :) The clips weren't too bad to remove, I got the hang of it by the time I got to the last couple :D

Cheers Rob.

I did this recently too - as you say you quickly learn how much tug you need to give :) I really like the extra lightness you get. If it gets too dazzling in the summer I may apply some tint film to see if that does the trick as I'm not keen on re-installing the blind unless absolutely necessary!

Can these blinds be removed without opening the sunroof?

Mine does not want to open and I don't dare force it so I have disconnected the switch so no-one else does either.

Thanks

Nigel

I would guess it may not be possible without opening the roof, as the front section can only easily be removed from above. But maybe one of the guys who have done it will know better.

Last summer I removed the front section, but may go for the full monte this year.

I don't think it would be possible without having the roof open. The blind has to pop up out of the clips (clips stay in the headlining) and therefore you would not be able to push the blind up enough in order for it to come out of the clips.
Your doing the right thing not wanting to force the roof open. You may well be able to have it easily repaired without any long lasting damage but forcing it could ruin the mechanism.

Cheers Rob.

Dan - ours came out, but soon went back in as we spend a fair amount of time under the sun in Italy. I struggled to get the clips back on and then realised that it is not necessary to clip it in as it will just rest in place with no vibrations still slides effectively and looks no different. So if we do get a summer in the UK this year just pop it back in - easy peasy:)

@Pugilese - useful info thanks - do you mean that you didn't clip back the bigger frame that contains the fixed rear screen?

Just this minute come back in from following your guidance and my Open Sky blind was out in less than 10mins!

Thanks to all for discussing methods in this thread.

Bye for now.

Funny that I've just this week put mine back in! I was finding that even in the English summer the car just gets too hot and the aircon has to work a lot harder. Doesn't look as nice though and certainly the view up out from the back is not as panoramic...

I carefully cut away the cross-frame that is between the front and rear sections. I then refitted the simple frame rectangle (it looks so much better .... not "raw" and unfinished!) Then, it is a very simple matter to re-position the front sliding section! It is literally a minutes work! Also, you can do that all-important lubrication at the very back of the roof, any time you want! I hope this helps! .... David

Does that mean that you can use the sliding mesh either in front, back, or any position in between?

Just did mine to see what its like and much lighter and easy to do but as DJ 190 mentions without the frame it does look unfinished/raw so I'm considering the frame in with the mesh blinds out. I did fit just the front screen in on its own fine but the lack of trim lets it down.

Given that we've got blue sky today, I've just done mine. A great improvement. Hopefully I will now need to buy a sun hat ;-)

Having only recently purchased an A2 I have started with the less expensive modifications.

I can only echo Rookies recommendation to just do it!

Such a difference in less than 10 minutes.

Thanks to Skipton and TallPaul for the advice, it's great to see this thread retained after it was opened 9 years ago.

When you have removed the roof blinds the edges of the roof trim can look a bit bare.

Some people remove the rear mesh, then cut the centre bar out and smooth it out nicely, then refit the (now) rectangular trim.

This tidies it up very nicely while retaining all of the extra light you have without the blinds.

Hi Alexm,

All you need is a flat-bladed screwdriver and patience!

Firstly, open the roof with the blind closed and push in the little black clips which hold the sliding part in the grooves. Start off with the front two, then pull the sliding part forwards and do the back two. Then remove the sliding part of the screen.

I want to deep clean the sliding blind which is rather dirty and would prefer to do this removed from the car. I've not overly analysed the clips, can anyone confirm if this is as easy as it sounds in practice and if refitting is as straightforward?

the sliding blind can be very easily removed with the roof open fully, it slides on spring fingers, simply push these towards the centre of the car with a couple of thin screwdrivers, you will need to push both spring fingers at the same time, then lift then corner upwards, repeat at the other corner same side, then lift out the sliding section.
Cheers,
Paul
