Is the MPG really 65.7 combined on the tdi?!

I think my mpg may be taking a hit due to the topography 'round 'ere?! My 24 mile round trip to work is all dual carriageway, but its all up hill and down dale. On the flatter bits doing a steady 80mph the DIS reads a pleasing 55-60mpg. As soon as I hit a climb I have to step on the gas a bit more to maintain 80mph, and the DIS reads about 25-30mpg! Average this out and I get my 45-50mpg over a tank.

A recent trip to Penzance, about 300 miles there and back, saw an average 57mpg. I was pleased with this, especially as the sun was shining, the OpenSky was open, and I was enjoying myself and often found the speedo to read 90mph. Ahhhhhh.....

Hey, we all wanna be glad that we dont drive what one of my buddies has just got. A Jaguar XK8 3.5 V8. The thing is just lush, but the granniest motorway driving still only yields 11mpg! Still, if you can afford the £48k price tag, who cares? Other than Mother Nature that is...

Correction on what I 'calculated' earlier on. So if a gallon is 4.55 liters, then my fuel consumption lies around 51 mpg.

Hey, I'm a granny too, now! Sort of...
Good thing I don't have a DIS...

But, looking at this from a different perspective: what do all these figures mean? We can hardly call them facts, because, as it turns out, everbody comes up with different figures, depending on driving style and type of traffic/road. The only thing I know for sure, is that the factory figure is, well, slightly optimistic... What do we gain by knowing that? Does it make any real difference in the cost of the car, in total? When comparing petrol to diesel: yes. But when comparing diesels you gain a really small percentage, translating into pennies of savings, compared to the total cost of ownership...

Just my 0.02

Cheers,
Edo

Be afraid, be very afraid !!!!! Driving an A2 makes you old !!!!!!!!

What does it matter - you're getting damn good mpg even if you only manage 45mpg. If you wanted to save some money, then why did you buy such an expensive small car??

P.S. I quite like the thing really

I am the Fifth Column. I am no longer an A2 owner. The A3 TDI DSG is awesome - yoof influence - I do wear a baseball cap but NOT backwards.

My TDi 75hp with heavy glass roof, aircon and alloy wheels improved its fuel consumption until it had covered 8000 miles. Careful records and driving much the same all the time show my consumption is worse in winter (engine warms up very slowly) and summer (aircon is on.) Economical changeups are at 15, 25, 35, 45mph.

As you can see from the other contributions members agree that different cars get different consumption: whuy gets 67mpg and I get 60mpg with "granny driving" in similar cars. My best ever for a whole tank is 72mpg. To find your absolute best figures remove your partner, wardrobes and sacks of cement from your A2, drive at a steady 52mph in top gear (use cruise control if you have it) on a flat, straight, deserted road with a smooth tarmac surface, with the engine fully warmed up, on a very hot day with no wind, with the air-con switched to economy. Under these special conditions my car's DIS reading moves back and forth between 95mpg and 112mpg.

Oh, and for maximum economy you should be driving in Luxembourg or Spain where the diesel is so much cheaper that it makes you weep...

Just re-visited the forum after a couple of months away.

MY 1.4 tdi (75bhp) has now done 160000 miles. It has the Superchip upgrade to 108 bhp (more like 95 bhp in reality!) To be honest it is hammered all the time and the fuel consumption (no DIS, so calculated) has gone up from 50.1 mpg at 7000 miles to 53.8 at 16000 miles. I've recently done a couple of consecutive tankfuls driving as a 'granny' and managed to get around 63mpg [29]
To be honest, the difference in fuel consumption between 'normal driving' and 'spirited driving' is insignificant - so why spare the horses? [8D][6]

If it's economy with a big E you want then it's very hard to beat the 1.2 TDI - I've managed 103mpg on a commute from work (over 28 miles in rush hour)

Average 83 mpg in summer and around 79 mpg in winter - and that's not hanging about!

Almost same torque as my old MR2 Mk1

Cheers

it was a personal 'like', however now its starting to look like a loaf of bread, you can forget it - ;)

chivers, what are your tyres like? I've got the standard 175/60 15", if yours are 185 that
may account for some of the mpg difference. The heavy glass roof is another factor, and when I say 'granny' driving, it's 60mph on the motorways. I don't do that anymore, I'm up to 75 now.

Well it's nice to here from somebody who is going to drive their A2 not like these guys who do 6K/Year.
I have a 2-year-old 1.4 TDI SE with 60K on the clock and regularly do 700-mile round trips to France (6 of the last 7 weeks).
@ UK speeds expect 55 to 65mpg, my PB is 72mpg between Derby and the Channel tunnel.
For French speeds expect 50 to 58mpg (130+ KPH).
Obviously we don’t drive at 80 or over in the UK.

Mine has now done 14K over 13 months. It is a bit heavier than some due to added extras in the boot.

It was chipped up from 300mls and is driven quite hard. As I have kept all my fuel receipts I have been able to do pump to pump assessments.

Once again, I drive my baby hard, and the air con is always on, but I averaged 61mpg over the last year which I think is amazing.

My chipped up version reads 112bhp on a rolling road [11 months ago] and has seen the wrong side of speedo a few times but it is shy about burning fuel. What can I say.

The chipping I believe has added not distracted to better fuel consumption. I would say that with the added weight [approx 110kg] plus heavy driving, if this was removed I could easily see high 60's mpg.

Werner

You are right. I have 185x16 tyres, including a full-size spare wheel. These wheels/tyres are heavier than I expected, and the width obviously contributes to the drag.

My car was bought in Kortrijk in Belgium so drives very sensibly(!) and evenly at 105kmh on the autoroutes and motorways.

Maybe I should put in some lightweight components, change the engine to a smaller aluminium unit with an auto gearbox, put on narrow tyres, take off the glass roof and the air conditioning, then I can get ecoangel's consumption...
