MPG Comparison/Observations

My last full tank gave 59.5mpg (59.1 DIS) using 'normal' BP diesel and without any additives and currently i am showing 59 on DIS on Total diesel.

But you have those smaller wheels and that fancy fifth gear! Mind you even on my 17's my DIS is showing 59.1 with only one quarter of the tank left, so maybe that 5th gear at sub 70 speeds is beginning to show some mpg benefits.

For the last 6 years, I've consistently got no more than 28mpg from my 1.6 FSI.

Recently installed a high flow air filter, now I'm getting 34-38 mpg!!! It's amazing. By far the biggest benefit, apart from the beefy new engine sound, and slightly sprightlier drive...

:)

Since replacing my temp sender and thermostat, I've got 53MPG out of the three tanks of Diesel - have put Millers in each time as usual. That's been a higher than usual amount of motorway driving, but even so I'm pleased to be back in the 50+ bracket.

mine seems to be settling to @ 59-59.5 mpg now using any of the major fuel brands. Will try and get the aero mods and exhuast done this next week or so and see what further improvement is seen.

Adrian that's good going - what were you getting before the 5th gear mod?
I've still yet to fit the sub-frame spoiler, must get to that - couldn't get a decent enough centre mounting for it to be secure.

With my recent Bradford commuting, Tank has seen record returns of 56.6mpg (DIS indicated) which is very respectable, as I've not spared the beans and I'm still on 215 tyres!

Speaking of which, I'll put feelers out here, but would anyone be interested in swapping their 16" SE wheels for a set of 17" S3 anthracite wheels?

Cheers

Mike

Its the sub-frame spoiler everyone seems to struggle with! I was as low as 49mpg in the worst of the winter weather and generally low 50's. however some of my improvment is also due to tyre/wheel changes

Get out there and fit your bits! The wheel arch spoilers are simple enough, and the tunnel cover is easy. The subframe spoiler is a pig though.

I'm not in the A2 daily yet, still in a Polo 1.4 8v and got 56mpg from the last tank :D
That's the daily trundle to work and a couple of m-way trips.
I do drive it gently but keeping up with traffic ok, it just lopes along nice and effortlessly.
I hope the A2 gets somewhere close driven in the same way but I fear it won't:(

For work I've been a driving a new Polo 1.4 dsg for a couple of days; around town work 40mpg, motorway 50mpg. 70mph @ 2600rpm! Oh to have that engine/box combo in the Audi...

57.4mpg from the last tank and that's with wide tyres too!!

Hoping for 60 before long and that's without sparing the beans!!

Cheers,

Mike

That's impressive Mike - do you feel that you're getting a big gain from your ultra 5th gear? Maybe you should try some low rolling resistance tyres next?

Yes, the gear is making a difference, but then I've gone for the tallest one available.

I fully intend to make tyres the next area to concentrate on - I would like to swap to 16" ones, but need to find someone who wants to swap to 17" first!

Cheers,

Mike

PS It's not a swap with the 6-arm silver 17" TT ones I have one at the moment

I would just like to add that my latest result over 2 weeks of commuting 30 miles each way gave a DIS reading of 75.1, worked out at 73.0mpg!

Thats still with 17 sport tyres too.

Sweet.

I was really trying! I managed that by never using more than about 60% throttle when accelerating, and crusing at between 2000 and 2200 rpm - a few mph more than the HGVs... about 60mph. I did creep up to higher speeds before big hills on the A1 and let the speed drop whilst going uphill.

There is more to come with under-body aero, low resistance tyres and warmer weather - half of those days it was 6 degrees when I left for work! This week I wasn't trying too hard and I'm on 66.6pmg, with much more round town driving.

Inverness-Aberdeen + Back again.

Milage on trip is 250 miles and so far 64 mpg

I just remembered why I bought it again:D

Economy still amazes me from my 110,000 miler. Last tankful got me 64mpg!

Overall average from my 1.4 benz so far is 46.6 with a worst of 43 and a best of 49. Happy with that but can't help thinking about aero/suspension/tyre tweaks...never happy!
