My A2 is going to be off the road for a very long time.

And thank your lucky stars you weren't under it when it rolled off the ramps!

Be safe and take your time with the next seal!

Simon.

I was in it rolling around on the hand brake rebuilding the interior.
Too late though to get it back on.

Agree, fibre glass so it can be repaired
Cheers Paul and Steve, yes done that sort of thing years ago when cars were repaired with fibreglass. Problem is the door is covered in my greasy fingerprints. I think my Mrs has seen an opportunity for a new one. I would also need to paint the whole thing.
I feel a new thread, A2 tried to escape, garage door repair.

Yay! How was the drive? Rewarding for all your extreme efforts?

I had a backlog of towing duties for it to do. Made several tip trips and collected a new fence. So I have been ambling around at 50 mph with a trailer behind me. :(

Bloody car 4 months off the road and still no end in sight.

I'm still stuck waiting on a pair of front sub frame consoles, both written off due to press damage and threads stripping out.

I think basically everything on my car is seized. Wrote off my Sealey seal puller on Monday removing the second drive flange seal, it pulled the first one easily. Second seal resisted a side hammer. It resisted a bearing puller. I set fire to the seal and it still resisted a slide hammer. I got a bigger bearing puller out:

Unbelievable, I needed that to get a seal out

I feel your pain Phil. Have you thought about asking A2Steve about some secondhand consoles? Where has the press damage come from - was it pushing the rear bush out? I planned to change my bushes but they looked in good nick so left them alone.

A beam type puller is usually more robust than the odd-leg type - let me know if you want some help.
Simon.

Hi Simon. I did ask about used consoles but the car being broken had to be moveable so it could be disposed of. The threads were shot in both of my consoles, one with 3/4 of the bolt still in there.
Yes I was pressing the rear bushes, wasn’t 100% about how it was supported, got 5T on and it bent nicely. Bush didn’t budge a jot.
Beam puller was defeated nicely by the seal so went for the 3 leg.
Kind of you to offer help thank you. I think though the only thing I haven’t got is a 4 post car lift.
Even when I have the sub frame and drive shafts back on I still have an oil leak up the back of the engine to fix. It’s going to be a while yet.

Seal shouldn't be in there that tight - are you sure you are pulling on the right part and not the case internal shoulder?

You need to be careful using a press for the bushes also to make sure the load only goes through bush mounting boss - i.e. you are reacting the load close to the bush and not putting load through the whole console. Manual shows a self reacting setup for this very reason.

Yes, cut the rubber away so I could get under the steel lip. It really was in that tight. Any way couldn’t swing a hammer under the car on stands to drift the new seal square. Not happy with the new seal. I’ll see how easy that comes out. It’s going to take two to fit a seal. One outside the car with a length of wood and a hammer and one under controlling the mandrill.
Yes needed that jig for my press but as one console was dead and the other requiring some accurate helicoiling I decided to see if I could manage without.

Seal shouldn't be in there that tight.

It appears to have been crimped into a steel sleeve hence the difficulty getting the old one out without a big puller. Also needed force to get the new one in. Slightly distorted it. Now waiting on a new one. Now I understand the problem I’ll get it next time.

Pulled the new seal out and had a good look at what I'm dealing with. I think the original seal had been pressed too deep and the crimps are actually depth stops. Not at all intended to grip the seal.

I pressed the new seal to the same depth as the original which required more force than normally required and I slightly distorted the seal. New one on its way and will be pressed to the stops only.

Yep depth stops, job is a doddle when you work to them.

Even more progress:

Spooky - was literally about to PM you to see how you were getting on!

Looks like home stretch ;-)

Simon.

Fingers crossed, back to sensible motoring in the next week or so. A2 has been off the road for nearly 5 months.

Got some bits to find in my garage and waiting on a CV boot crimping tool. Just an oil leak then to investigate and cure.

This has made me happy:

The little aluminium trim, it's about 12 months since I removed it and can't find it anywhere. Big thank you to Snydersmuncher93 for posting one over .

Never seen my A2 as an off-roader but that’s what he is again today. Failed his MOT with a broken rear spring, I checked them last week. Guess after never failing a single MOT I should have been more vigilant for, unlucky for some, MOT 13.
Rules have changed too, it’s failed so it’s grounded.
Get the spanners out again Ward.

Rear springs are easily changed, but it will lead to new spring mounts, bump stops, even new shocks!

What was the reason for using the cast front control arms?

Ian
