New Owner in Norfolk

strange. Why would someone want to remove it; or maybe it was forgotten on the assembly line. Did you check the other faces of that compartment:

I believe you will need a Audi/VW dealer or an independent that has access to Audi/VW database.
in at least one of my A2s (I think the one that came with the spare wheel frame) the sticker is on the wall of the compartment to the left of the battery - but cannot be read entirely with the battery in situ - could yours be over there too?

Nope, battery box is clean, potentially it was lost during a swap if the adhesive had failed as the battery was not long ago replaced supposedly

So 300 odd miles later, I have come to a few conclusions.
That undertray was designed by lucifer himself (to make matters worse the last owner hasn't replaced the missing/knackered fixings he has used self tapping screws that are a PITA to get lined up again) I will be correcting this... I need proper fixings!
The rumble/grumble of the 3 cylinder diesel is actually quite a nice sound at certain parts of the rev range (first time in over a decade of solely diesel cars I can say this!) which is a massive win for my ears.
I will be avoiding the local unbridged fords given the location of the air filter!
The double din hackery from the previous owner is bypassing the rear speakers so a harness is on the way to correct this, I am going to make a decent job of a standard cage instead of cark-eyed mess that he had done

Have to say that I am rather taken with my little cheapy runaround motor, still plenty of kinks to iron out like two fobs that only work occasionally but read 3V on the batteries.... but shes a nice little thing to potter about in and surprisingly torquey
