Noise when turning wheel

Was the juddering noticeable from under the wheel arch or from the top of the mount when the bonnet is removed?

I just grabbed the spring with both hands when the car was on the ground and tried to twist it. The good side was smooth and springy, the bad side was grinding and juddering. I could tell even with that small amount of movement.

Yes sounds like the top mounts have seized exactly what happened to mine, just replaced x2 what a pig of a job......passenger side not too bad, drivers side a nightmare only because you cant get in anywhere, any how all done now.Drivers side when i removed fell to bits in my hand ball bearings everywhere..lol.

Just done both mine yesterday as had the same noise. And yes it is a pig of a job.Mine also fell apart in my hand bearings everywhere.I got a pair of genuine ones from audi £29 trade.

Ohhh so may choices.......Audi OEM, Weitec, Monroe - last time I looked the latter was £400 just for the shocks! Still a posh suspension upgrade might add value (or at least halt depreciation) of the vehicle.
They've defo both gone though - just did the maual spring rotation check - judder city......

I bought bilstein B4s and febi tops. So basically OEM equivalents. I nearly added Spax springs but decided I'd save that for my next A2 ;)

I think a large number of people look to upgrade the suspension when it comes to replacement - there are better components now than the Audi OEM. Reams of threads about various different suspension set-ups that have been tried over the years - it's been a 10year + project of owners and members of this forum to "fix" the A2's ride!

Personally, I have Koni FSD dampers and Weitec springs. Others have Monroe Reflex dampers. Others have Spidan springs...

Could you possibly paste me links to any comparison pages? Stealth have quoted me for a straight fix, and for the Koni/Weitec upgrade (the latter of which I still am not 100% sure what improvements the £800 cost will yield). I was also hoping for a midway between the two option.......a mate of mine suggested Coilover suspension might be an option.....these seem cost effective but also lower the car, and I'm not sure I want to do that, or whether coilover will improve the ride at all. Cheers

Post- Statement: I've found the Schnelletrecker posts

Did you notice an improvement to normal conditions? A local VAG specialist told me he would always put OE equivalents on, simply because they're much better OE parts than they were 12 years ago...

Compared to the soft and squishy things that were what was left of the original parts (135000 miles) they are a heck of a lot better.

Edit: I suppose I should be a bit more specific. Compared to the original, the ride is not noticeably worse (in harshness) than the original setup, but better for handling.

I got them from SpringLoaded in Devon. That was the cheapest place I could find at something like £38 each for the shocks. The tops were around £28 I think.

Hmmm I'm, ruddy confused as to which setup to go for, I've only had my A2 for 11 months so have no idea what they were like as new.
The Koni/Weitec combo lowers the car and I don't want to do that (I'm 46 and have no desire to 'pimp my ride') - and the Bilsteins seems too 'cheap' to be true (for want of a better word)
You didn't say whether you changed the front springs while you were there, so I assume you didn't. Still I don't intent to get it done till the end of March so I still have 4 weeks agonising time.............
