Not the … End of the road

This is sad news. Are you sure about the crank? I’m not sure how a garage could diagnose a DMF and not notice the back of the engine was not connected to the front. I’d ask a few more questions. Timing chain could have snapped for example and wrapped itself around the crank.

For others with DMF failures, will a standard AMF clutch and flywheel do the job? Plenty at breakers.

I fitted a AMF clutch and flywheel to my 90 and it’s been absolutely fine over the last 7K miles, it’s lovely and light, quiet and vibration free.
I fitted it after hearing things about failing DMF’s damaging engines.

Now THAT is good info. Did you have to change the flywheel?

Yes, to a AMF or BHC flywheel with the cut out to maintain the balance, along with a LUK AMF clutch kit, the 8mm engine-gearbox spacer is removed. I believe @Menno has done the same.
It’s a cheap solution if you have mechanical sympathy and don’t boot it too much at low rpm. I’ve heard it could damage the ‘box, if that occurs it’ll be a good excuse for a 6speed.
I aim to run this for the long term and I’ll report any problems, but it’s been fine so far.

Update: WOM are buying the car from me with a view to fixing it / keeping another A2 on the road
Andy @Clackers decided on Saturday morning that the car was too good to break. Andy contacted Rob @chumsofmanutd; we have spoken; …fast forward; Rob collecting the car tomorrow

Local garage DMF failed diagnosis was on the ramp, with the engine tray off, there was play on the clutch/DMF (big screwdriver in gap between engine and gearbox)
Local garage haven’t opened the engine: with gearbox and clutch/DMF removed there is play at the crankshaft … which has been diagnosed as broken crankshaft

I have asked for first dibs buying it back when fixed

A couple of weeks ago my car made an unpleasant noise whilst accelerating from a traffic light on a 40mph dual carriageway in Manchester
ATL, something like 205,000 miles, original lots of things …
Had it recovered back to Ynys Môn/Anglesey. Local garage diagnosed failed DMF
Fair enough: the average life of a ATL DMF seems to be in the low 100,000+ miles
No DMF in the UK. Ordered one (LUK) from Italy at a scary price; paid the VAT/duty, it arrived with the garage on Monday this week
Garage managed to get my car on his ramp today. WhatsApp followed by phonecall mid afternoon: can you come by?
Got there an hour later; end of play today. Car on ramp: driveshafts off; gearbox off; clutch/DMF off; probably lots of other things off (I am not a mechanic). Engine supported…
Diagnosis: crankshaft broken!

I met @Clackers last year (or 2021) after I had parked my car in Deganwy, and came back to it to find a note along the lines: “If you want to sell this car …”

Contacted Andy this evening: I think my car is beyond salvage. The garage rightly needs their ramp back tomorrow morning

Andy is going to try to help me recycle my car back into the A2 community. Like @timmus, who bought his A2 around the same time, my car has been perfect for me. In recent years I have spent plenty to keep it on the road: better the devil you know; plus no depreciation

I won’t be buying another A2. Having to import a part from Italy (post Brexit) just to try to keep it on the road means the A2 is no longer a viable project for me

Purchased via this forum Oct-2009, 2 owners 40,000 miles
Oh Andrew so sorry to hear this .. wish you luck which ever way you go..Paul

I was sorry to read all this.
And now Im concerned that this is a breakdown possibility I had not known about.
Is it certain that the below par DMF caused this or could it have been the timing chain ?
I guess they were both overdue ?
My DMF has only done 100k but I have given it a hard time with extra low revs and welly at times and has not felt that good for at least 15k under load (feels harsh) but quiet otherwise. My Crankshaft has done 290k .
Hope you find a decent replacement or WOM fix it for you.

Excuse me! Why do you presume my car was badly maintained?
WOM changed the timing chain in 2020; the DMF never gave a problem, and was wrongly diagnosed when the crankshaft had broken (on the ramp, screwdriver between engine and gearbox there was play: garage presumed DMF Once DMF was ordered and gearbox removed, it was obvious the point of failure was the crankshaft)

Not at all.
I like to think my car is reasonably well maintained but had the original chain to 290k. for eg.
As some have given up at nearer 100k (bad) luck has something to do with it and I was hoping there was a
reason for a crankshaft to break.
What we do now is if the chain does go for whatever reason, the crankshaft will too.
