Information Problems already.

It was VAG's first attempt at a direct injection petrol engine and therefore features the inevitable teething troubles of a new system.

Not quite true Tom. The Lupo 1.4FSI was the first and was only sold in Germany and Austria. It was a petrol 5L version of the 3L with an automated gearbox. It even had titanium rear springs! It was VW's way of getting customer's to pay for vehicle development!

Ah, thanks RAB. I had heard of the 1.4FSI, but didn't know it pre-dated the 1.6FSI; I had always assumed they were developed in tandem and were effectively two sides of the same coin. In Lupo World, does the 1.4FSI cause as many headaches as the 1.6 does here?

Cheers,

Tom

I too stand by the FSI... plus with the new MOT regulations regards diesels and most diesels I’ve seen being above the 100k mark.. it only makes me wonder how many will survive the next 5 years ?
To be honest, I would’ve gone for a diesel as the wife’s is great fun to drive. But as you said with the anti diesel campaign gathering momentum, it put me right off.

I'm fortunate enough to have a well-running FSI, but mine isn't a daily driver.

As has been said, when running well they are a great pairing in the A2. Hopefully the fix will see you without further issue for a long while to come. Premium fuel is a must and I advocate an injector cleaner periodically too.

Best of luck and enjoy your new car.

You are going to love it! I had one for a short while but it had more issues than I could afford so went for a 1.4. As great as my little a2 ‘Henri’ is. I wish it had more power. I also found that putting injector cleaner in it made a massive difference. However I have seen others say it makes non. Glad you issue was as I thought and was just the CP.

Hi Tom,

The Lupo FSI (2000-2003) predated the A2 FSI by two years. I suspect that it's a lot rarer than the 3L (even) but I cannot find any figures on the number built. I shouldn't imagine it was any more reliable than the A2 FSI, plus it had potentially a nightmare of a transmission to boot! At the time, apart from the Lupo FSI, only Ferraris had titanium springs!

Correction! The Lupo FSI was the first production car to have titanium springs! A quick search of mobile.de today revealed 74 3Ls and 17 FSIs so the FSI is not as rare as I thought. For a crude estimate of the numbers, about 30,000 3L's were built.
