Hello everyone!
I've researched the various threads on this subject but am still a little confused.
I was only supplied with one key on the purchase of my A2 and am now looking to get a spare sorted out.
My first question is as follows:
The part number on my key is 8Z0 837 231 and it communicates with the car at a frequency of 433.92 MHz. While looking on eBay for a possible candidates, I've found examples that match the nine digits as listed above, but some of them also have an additional suffix by way of a single letter, i.e. D. Is this letter of any significance? And where might I find the corresponding suffix on my existing key?
Secondly, I'm at a loss about the programming of a second key. Will these instructions that I purchased (for 99p - worth a punt, I thought) from eBay work? OR will I need to get the key programmed at an Audi dealer or local auto locksmith? (I'm assuming that the blade can be cut at any reputable locksmiths?):
Remote Control Programming (1997 ON)
1. Using your original key Switch Ignition ON but do not start engine
and leave the key in the ignition.
2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second key.
If you only have one key put the drivers window down shut the door and
lock it using the button on the inside of the door.
3. Using the remote control press the Unlock button once, and the horn
will sound once.
4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate the
coding procedure. The remote control will now be programmed.
NOTE : When performing programming on additional remotes the procedure
is the same, except you press the unlock button 2, 3 or 4 times for the
different remote.
For example : If programming 2 remotes press the unlock button twice
with a 1 second interval between each press, repeat for 3 and 4 remotes.
5. Switch Ignition OFF.
6. Remove key from ignition and check for operation.
7. The coding procedure can be repeated up to 4 times for additional
remotes.
8. The ignition must be switched OFF between programming each remote
control.
Remote Control Erasing (1997 ON)
1. Using your original key Switch Ignition ON but do not start engine
and leave the key in the ignition.
2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second key.
If you only have one key put the drivers window down shut the door and
lock it using the button on the inside of the door.
3. Press the remote control unlock button 5 times in 1 second intervals.
A short horn will sound.
4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate memory
erase.
5. Switch ignition OFF, all remotes are now erased.
I'm obviously keen to get this right - I don't want to end up with an A2 I can't start...that would be awful!
I will be very grateful, as always , of any advice any of you can offer.
I'm looking forward to the time when I've garnered enough A2 experience to be able to help somebody myself!
Hope that you're all well.
Kind regards,
Michael Davenport.
