Replacement Keys, Remote Locking, Blade Cutting, ID48 Programming etc

I have been supplied with one very tired battered key (8Z0 837 231D) with my new (to me) A2. The flip mechanism is very worn, it folds in half very easily when in the ignition. There is a lot of physical damage (you can see the battery inside) and the remote locking doesnt work...... so generally its fut!

I did purchase a new aftermarket key body off eBay hoping to transfer the PCB, ID48 chip and key blade but the item was junk and incorrectly designed for the transplant.

I would like to buy two new keys, one to replace the battered one and one for my wife. I have been told that I can use a slightly more modern key, which is nice for me as most of the XXX 837 231 type keys are quite aged and battered now!

Am I best off buying second hand genuine keys and rebuilding them with new blade and transponder? - if so what OEM Part No's
What is the best procedure for syncing the remote locking?
Is VagTacho the best tool for finding the immobiliser code and programming the new keys?

I have looked online and companies are happy to charge me £150 per key for this but this seems a bit much and I'm hoping its DIY-able and I'll learn some bits along the way.

This is not something I have delved into in the past, I do have an old copy of VagTacho and VCDS, any experiences or info would be very much appreciated.

TIA

Good afternoon,

Also have a look through this thread.

The eBay seller I linked is reliable. Only connection I have is being a happy customer.

In the last few months I’ve purchased from this seller:

1. New/refurbished 220K (newer style fob)
2. Empty cases to refurbish existing key fobs
3. Spare key blades

Everything I have purchased from him has programmed and worked perfectly.

Please do not pay someone £150 to do this for you. There are many members who can do this for you FOC. If you was somehow passing Coalville (J22/M1) I would do the programming for you but there should be someone a little closer.

Kind regards,

Tom

This Ebay seller will cut new blades from a picture and give you the key code

If you buy a blank key, you will find that nobody will cut if you. Their excuse is that the blade might break but the real reason is that they want to charge for their key. The blades supplied as above are brass but so are Vw's now (they used to be steel). Just get two cut blades, fit them to your blank keys and then get them paired.

Same seller I linked in the linked thread 1 post above.

I have had no issues with any of the items supplied by him.

Kind regards,

Tom

My CCM has the part number 8Z0959433AE, does anyone know if it will support the newer type of key?
Afternoon,

Yes I believe so and cannot see why it wouldn’t.

Regardless of the CCCU Revision, there are only 2 A2 key part numbers from my searching:

8Z0837231 (Q and other single letter CCCUs)
8Z0837231D (AF and other double letter CCCUs)

If your key fob ends in D which is working with the AE CCCU then the newer style key will work.

The 8E0837220K transmits the same frequency as the factory A2 ‘D’ key fob.

This is only my understanding though as I don’t recall working with an AE CCCU but it is of the same generation as the AF.

Hope that all makes sense.

Go for the 220K newer style key fob. If for some reason you cannot get it to work and it’s still in new/refurbished condition I’ll buy it from you and add it to Project 250 (I already have a spare blade to suit). I am confident that it’ll work though.

Kind regards,

Tom

My local locksmith in Acton happily cut my blank key for me a few weeks ago. 5 minutes in and out, and £7.50.

Hi Ian,

Hope all is well sir.

Again, no connection to this eBay seller but he cuts the key from a picture and is then delivered for £5 all in.

If there is no rush for a key this is certainly the frugal option.

Kind regards,

Tom

I got a good deal on a genuine refurbed remote with new blade and transponder chip, but cutting wasn't offered so I just wandered into the lockmith's and the job was done. Horses for courses I suppose!

Ive looked for the 8E0837220K key and the 8E0837220E
They look the same to me (besides the Part No,), whats the advantage of the newer key?

Evening,

No advantage at all, just aesthetics.

If you want to replace your worn key fob with another standard one, use the 'standard AF CCCU key fob' in the linked post earlier. If the listing has ended just send him a message and he will add another listing for you.

Kind regards,

Tom

Cant see em for a fiver all in?

I think he means the vendor charges an additional fiver to cut the key, this is on top of the sale price of the item. So its more like £55

Evening,

Please check the links in post #2 of the thread that I linked earlier on.

There is a link to the key blade itself which was £5 delivered.

Just checked the link myself and it looks like the price has gone up, unless I got a deal due to being a returning customer.

Kind regards,

Tom

So I’ve received my keys, obtained the SKC with VAG Commander and coded the keys using VCDS. Everything works ok but I have a flashing immobiliser lamp on the dash permanently.

Any ideas why and also how to get rid?

I've had a spare key case, with a cut key and an unprogrammed ID48 chip sitting in my desk drawer for, well must be 8 years ... must work out how to do that one day !

Andy,

If only you said about this whilst I was collecting the roof bars. I had (always do) my laptop and leads with me. This could have been solved whilst my boys were in your trampoline.

Maybe next time I’m your way.

Kind regards,

Tom

To be honest they've been in my desk for so long I'd forgotten about them until now.
Hope to see you soon ! :)
