Selector noise insulation (?) repair.

As the owner of a TDI75, you're perhaps better off converting your existing gearbox to 6-speed rather than fitting a 6-speed MYP gearbox. As such, a replaced shift tower bearing would be carried across to the 6-speed 'box, thus not wasting your efforts/money/time.

I didn’t realise that was a possibility (still very much a novice with A2 mechanics), so it’s good to know fixing the current problem wouldn’t be a waste.

It's worth noting, though, that the payback time for any 6-speed 'box is loooong. At the time I had my gearbox converted, I calculated that I'd have to do 120,000 miles in 6th gear before I broke even. Of course, there are many reasons to do it besides saving money, but unless you're doing lots of motorway miles, it's unquestionably just an expensive luxury.

Yeah...I can’t say it was something I was planning on doing before I qualified and have an actual salary, which is still 2 years away!

I am hoping the car will last me a very long time (i.e. to the end of its life...*sob*) and I do think the driving experience would be improved by a 6th gear, so I would get some of my value for money that way.

Personally, I find the longer 5th is a down-grade in terms of the vehicle's 'driveability'. On a winding A-road (or in a 50mph speed limit on the motorway) I found managing the larger gap between 4th and 5th really tiresome. When doing longer cross-country routes

I do a lot of motorway miles, but I also spend a fair amount of time climbing the hilly terrains of Yorkshire and Lancashire, so I think a long 5th would just do my head in.

Thanks for all the help and advice.

Your existing gearbox is of the 02J design. 02J gearboxes are used in VW Transporter vans as well as many VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda passenger vehicles. Although their internal gear ratios are chosen specifically for the vehicle in which they'll be fitted, the basic design is the same. There's a company who make 6-speed conversion kits of 02J gearboxes. My A2 uses its original gearbox, but has been converted to 6-speed. Have a read of this thread. It's nowhere near as well explained as the TDI120 thread, but will give you an idea of the process...

In which case, I can only encourage you to get the bearing replaced. If the 6-speed conversion is at least 2 years away, you don't want to be fighting with your gearbox for all that time.

Great to hear. As long as you're willing to keep on top of the inevitable issues that'll arise as the car gets older, there's no reason it shouldn't last for decades. Mine is 18 years old and has done 232k miles at the time of writing, but it drives like it's 2 years old. Unlike other cars, I don't have to worry that the car will start falling apart around the mechanicals.

Yeah, it'd do your head in. :p

Cheers,

Tom
