Service cost!!

My 1.6 FSI sport went to Audi (Walton) for it second service today, the first one since I have owned it. The basic charge for the service was initialy £350, this then jumper to £420 as they recomended that a 40K service was carried out(car has 25K on the clock)!

So far they have found that an oxygen sensor needs replacing (£287.90), they also recommend that the brake fluid is changed (£90.00) and they also that the fuel filter is changed (£69.30).

Just to top it all off they also said that three of the wheels are buckled, I knew one was bent but not three!!

I know I will have to take the hit for the service and the sensor but do I really need to have the fuel filter and brake fluid changed?

Also can someone point me in the right direction for a source of replica alloys?

You are right the differnce between the cost is the fuel filter. Just got it back and the total charge was £430 for a 40K service and a new wiper blade.

I am going to get a quote from a local independant garage for the sensor and see what they come back with before booking it in with Audi.

Unfortunatly the car is just under a year out of warranty!!

Hi Redders
Buckled Sport wheels seems to be a common problem. If there is no evidence of them being 'potholed', I would ask for a goodwill contribution for their replacement.

Cheers Spike

I'm surprised at the fuel filter replacement on the petrol engine, based on the info in the Service Schedule.
My service book published 14.04.2002 (see inside back cover) states that fuel filter replacement is only required on TDI engines @ 40 000 miles when used in severe conditions.

Get a trusted non-franchised mechanic to change the brake fluid and halve the cost. It's not beyond any garage used to modern cars.

We only have the dealer do the routine service and stamp the book...

Thats the plan I am speaking to Wheelbase in Hersham to try and get a quote for the oxygen sensor, exhaust gas recirculation valve and the brake fluid. The cost from Audi would be £563.76 I will let you know what Wheelbase come back with.

Just enquiring about first service for my A2 and have latest costs (east anglia)

Kings Lynn Audi = £229.03 incl.

Bury St Edmunds Audi = £244.26 incl.

will add when recieve others!

Is there anything in an A2 that makes it vital to take it to audi or a specialist for servicing or could any mechanic service it?

Interesting numbers being bandied around here. £90 (plus vat presumably) for brake fluid being changed? Hmmm. £99 + vat for labour?

So, since DOT 4 or DOT 5 brake fluid costs around £4 per litre (even through retail outlets like motor factors - and you dont necessarily need all of the litre), they are billing you for nearly an hours labour for this job.

Think about this. Your car is on the ramp being serviced, with the wheels already off (???).
How long does it take for someone to fill up the reservoir on their pressure bleeding rig (usually the excuse for why this costs so much is that you need to pressure bleed cars with ABS - not always necessary in my experience), connect it to the brake master cylinder & pressurise the brake system. They then have to go to each brake caliper, open the bleed nipple & bleed off the old fluid & close the nipples again when they've finished - maybe 15 minutes in total if you do each wheel twice.
I have maintained my own cars & those of some friends since starting driving in 1981 & have carried out the process of replacing brake fluid on racing karts, 23 different road cars (from mundane to exotic & high tech) & competition vehicles from rallying Skodas & Ladas, through to Historic Lotus racing cars, including my own collection of classic sportscars.
The process is invariably the same on any vehicle & if done correctly, rarely results in any trouble.
This is an easy job for any mechanically minded person to accomplish with fairly basic tools, so I suggest you shop around.
The point I am trying to make?? Sound like your all being screwed to me!!

Yes you are really being conned - my brother in law is an experienced vw mechanic working in a vw dealership and we carrried out the above job in no more than 15 minutes using the above method ie. on a high lift ramp and using pressure bleeder . Easy job using the above equipment so shows how the dealers are ripping people off.

Update!

Had the extra work that Audi highlighted during the service carried out by Wheelbase in Hersham, Surrey.

They carried out a brake fluid service (£69.97), replaced the split EGR pipe (£151.41) and changed a heater activation sensor (£206.86) which was causing the NOX fault. Total cost of £428.24 compared with the quote of £563.76 from Audi!!!

What with the new replica alloys (£300), one tyre (£80), swapping of original tyres (£40) and the 2nd service (£420) this has been a very expensive month!!!

Just had a quote from my nearest Audi dealership for first service, £270:eek:
So......asked if he could price match Audi Kings Lynns price of £229....(silence on the other end of the phone for a while!) Yes we can do that for you Sir:)

How can £40 spondulies just evapourate in so little time?

So, lesson to be learned, what you don't ask for you don't get!

I agree its pricey but its not just labour, they have to make some contribution to the high lift ramp and the pressure bleeder. Oh yeh and the rest of it goes on nice steel and glass show rooms that people only visit once every three years to have some arse licking oik try and sell them a new A3 with extra money off because HQ have stopped making the car you actually want to buy and that was a step forward (esp 1.2L) rather than another cloned golf!

Had my A2 since Feb this year, I asked when the next service was due as I did not want to buy it and then fork out £400 for a service soon after, salesman said when its close to the service they do it before I would collect it.However, have only done about 2000 mile since then and now its saying the 42000 mile service is due after another 600 mile, which after my trip to Birmingham this week will be very close. Been trying to get in touch with him but he's not returning my calls.I'm tempted to get my brother-in-law to service it, but my years warrenty is only valid if Audi do the service  Catch 22

Think I may have to pay as the cars been in the dealership more than enough, and could be cheaper in the long run.

The price seems excessive. Brake fluid can be tested to see if it has aborbed water. I no longer have my A2 as I sold it to my father in law so it is still in the family. When I last had it serviced depite being 3 years old the brake fluid was not changed as Audi confirmed that it was fine!

I now have a Touareg (don't ask me why - mid life crisis) and have just phoned around main dealers for an inspection service - prices vary from £245 - £353. Fortunatley the cheapest garage is the nearest!

It pays to ring around but do some of the prep work beforehand. i.e change the brake pads yourself if you know that they are likley to need it in the next 20-30k as the service will take future mileage consumables into account.

I still say that the A2 is the best car I have ever owned and the longest (4 years).

Just a follow-up, spoke to the stealership today, they said if it needs servicing within 4,000 miles of me buying the car it should have been serviced.
Can you believe it.......it will be 600 mile over :( when the dash says its due, Typical.....so, how much for a service at 43000 miles ????

Did you buy the car from the dealership that you went to regarding the service or was it a private sale. In any case there should be a service record

Just had invite to minor counties cricket match from my dealer, Buffet Lunch, Hospitality tent all day strawbs and cream afternoon!!!!! Hopefully I shall receive three tickets which will go towards offsetting costs of my first service;)
I always said Robinsons Audi were the best....
