I think that if you are topping up oil (½ltr) at 8-10000 miles then the duration isn't that important, its not as if you are not changing it at all.

I share John's concerns and will probably do an oil change at 12 months regardless of VSI indicator. I would rather waste some of the oil's potential performance than have an engine problem.

Topping up the oil is not the same as changing it, when you change it you drain all the impurities out, when you top up all you do is re-dilute them.

By the way John - Halfords in Erdington have the oil - £35 for 4 litres.

Why are NEARLY all the A2s in Lichfield are silver ? ? ?

Again, showing my naivety, how do you do an oil change on the A2?

Do you really want to know ? Easy answer is probably visit the dealer!!

Will probably be:
Warm up engine - oil drains faster.
Remove bonnet
Remove under engine tray
Remove filler cap
remove drain plug and collect old oil
Remove oil filter and replace with new filter
Re-fit drain plug - may require new plug or seal
Fill with oil
Replace under engine tray after cheking for leaks
Replace filler cap
replace bonnet
start engine
dispose of used oil responsibly

Not having looked too closely any of these may have a number of sub-steps!

Just a little thought I had the other day (my head still hurts)

If you keep your car for say 2-3 years but you dont do enough miles for it to need its first service (roughly 30,000 miles) Can you tell the new would be owner it has a full service history? even though it hasn't had any.

I see there seem to be I misunderstanding. Services are 30000 miles (Approx) or 2 years.
Therefore that period of 2-3 years it should of had at least 1 service

Then it would be seviced as per recommended manufactures instructions....

My 1.4 petrol is currently showing 12.5k and the display is showing 6700 miles before service.Engine still performing ok but brakes beginning to shows signs of wear.Bit worried having read Stuart`s mail regarding his service but I will wait and see.Might get a local guy to check the brakes prior to it going to Audi to check out the brakes.
1.4 engine is performing better and better the more miles it does.
I will keep informed about what happens at the service, probably due in about 3 months time....

Question
do you think audi would design an engine to foul up after using long life oil to the specified time limits between servicing what does anyone think!!
i had previously a vw polo and used mobil one fully synthetic oil serviced every 5000 miles do you think i should be doing the same with the audi ??
But the only thing in doing that is the cost and defeating the object of having long service intervals.
When purchasing the car this was one of the things that attrached me to the car Audi when asked said the engine and oil has been specially design to run like this
So should i get the oil changed every 10000 miles or not!! this then basically makes the audi like any other car is that what we want to do!!

Personely I intend to stick to the recommended 2 years or when it tells me, at this rate the miles will be up before the time...

It was one of the reasons for changing...

If the oil isn't up to the job Audi and Castrol will certainly have left themselves open to a lot of free engine repairs! I also intend on letting the car tell me when it needs a service, which should be in about 14 month time I guess. As the A2 isn't the only Audi to have VSI, they must be happy with the technology involved with VSI.

Andrew - 2003 1.4 TDI Silver Climate

22000 miles with 8,000 left on service indicator, about 50 miles per day including 10 miles in slow traffic. Topped up oil every 5,000 mile or so.

These modern Synthetic oils do more than extend service intervals.
On all the vehicles I've ever owned I have always changed engine oil before recommended mileages- up to now using mineral type oils.
The advent of these superb Synthetic oils has changed things somewhat. The biggest advantage is the performance and durability , compared to the "old" stuff. With the advent of modern high revving, performance engines, mostly with overhead camshaft designs, synthetic oils are a must, and take a lot of punishment.
But the way I see it doesn't matter a monkeys what type of oil is poured in from new, ( and how do you know what the quality of the "new" oil is that Audi have put in your car at manufacturing stage?- some makers use blended re-constituted oils ) it degrades due to the "running in" process and needs changing. Personally I'd prefer my new engine to come with ordinary ( good quality ) mineral oil, to allow the engine to run in quicker, change it after a few thousand miles, then use synthetic.
I think a lot of this "extended" service issue has come about due to environmental concerns, read, Authorities not liking people changing their own oils and sticking it down drains etc. Which is fair comment.
I shall change the original oil and then monitor the colour of the new oil as the miles clock up, and see how it goes. Eventually I shall have to get a dealer to "officially" service the car - at highly inflated prices, to get the book stamped.
The thing is that I'm one of those people who like the engineering aspect of my vehicles and see servicing as interesting-- it takes all sorts!!!
I fully appreciate that most owners don't want the bother of messing about under the car- life's too short!!

At the risk of boring everybody to death, I've managed to do an oil and filter change. Not the nicest of jobs mind, and although the air was a bit blue at times, I'm glad I've done it. The oil I drained out, approx 4.5 Litres ( that's with dipstick reading 3 quarters full ) was filthy black. When I bought the filter I was told that there are 2 different filters for the Tdi- mine's the later type. Halfords have Castrol SLX on offer at the moment for £27.99 for 4 Liters. The mileometer reading was 8883 miles.

Hello everyone
i have just got the phone with the technical advisor of CASTROL OILS UK
and defined the oil that the Audi A2 uses which i hope you are all using which is (CASTROL SLX LONGLIFE 2 0W-30)
Elspeth Barley the technical advisor says the oil is designed to go black this is the capture agent which stops all by-products of burning diesel/unleaded fuel wearing the internals of all components in the engine, THE BLACKNESS of the oil does not depict the wear of the oil just the ammount of carbon it is holding away from the workings of the engine this even though black does not effect the lubricating qualities of the oil or cause any wear. The oil has been tested upto 150,000 miles without a change nothing has been found to be wrong with the engine or oil this test is continuing to be carried out and CASTROL are monitoring the results.
The reason why Audi and VW state 30,000 miles or 2 years is because the public in their opinion would not accept the oil life to last that long so have had to vastly reduce the life of the oil in the engine to 2 years.
But rest asured the oil has been test in diesel cars without being changed until above and beyond 150,000 between service intervals

Conclusion:~ the oil is highly engineered and refined for the A2/Audi/vw/seat/skoda models and the 2 years or 30,000 miles service interval is well within the capabilitese of the oil.

If you want you can get in touch with CATROL TECHNICAL UK on

TEL:~ 01793 452222

or you can write to

CASTROL UK LTD

Hope this puts minds at rest since all the talks of engine problems and wear of the engine in later life slightly worried me so i thought i would help out and get the low down of the oil for everyone in the a2 club who wanted to know.

Kind Regards

Andrew Simmons Audi A2 1.4 TDI SE Cobalt Blue.
