Starter motor re-grease

I ended up taking it all apart greasing the other spline and now I can't put this back in

There maybe a trick to hold the brushes in place, e.g. Some small holes in the end through which you can insert pins to hold the brushes in a retracted position whilst you fit the rotor. Maybe drill some 1mm holes in the 4 correct places? If not, I wonder if you can hold the brushes in place temporarily with elastic bands, hold the lot under the tap to make it wet, then bung it in the freezer for a few hours. That should freeze the brushes in a retracted position, then you can quickly take the elastic bands off and put it all back together before the the ice melts and the brushes ping back out.
If you're worried about putting the starter back together wet, you can put it in the oven at 80degC for half an hour before the mechanical end goes on. Matt

.

I put fishing line around them to hold them in and then snip the line and pull it out.

You have to do that when they are half way on or you don't have the space to remove the line.

tried hammer without stripping down to much of engine bay so limited space it has been soaked in wd40 around flange for weeks now and I'm using it still so the loosen bolt and jag trick sounds a great idea localised heat I don't think would work as both allu parts to split thanks guys will give that a go the morra

Mark, this is really odd, and apologies in advance for what may seem like a stupid question, but I just have to ask: you have actually taken the bolts out, haven't you? On my car I had to take 2 nuts off, which hold a metal strut on the top and the earth wire lug on the bottom. These nuts fit male threads which are part of the (larger thread) bolts that hold the starter flange to the bell housing. After removing those nuts, you have to take out the 2 long bolts (about 5" from memory). Again, apologies if i have stated the bleedin' obvious.

So you know your way round a spanner then mark lol
Mine virtually fell out, maybe it's been changed before I don't know but I ain't complaining.... Only frustrated about the bushes not going back in as easily as they came out!

Craig, Steve and I must have been typing at the same time and his solution sounds a lot simpler than mine. Hey Mark, respect n hope you get it out. Matt

thanks biggdogg I had a wee laugh at your comments I will get it out , as its my daily driver i built it back up, but will try again wen i can , I'm certain its corrosion build up as vehicle had lay about unused for two year before i acquired it, and i have had to change a lot of perishables on car

Would this broken censor stop the starter from working?

I would imagine so as that looks like your ignition switch feed wire connection which energises the solenoid and throws out the gear to turn engine over

Hi,

If you use a set of jump leads and a small live wire you can bench test the starter.

It will dance about a bit on the floor but at least then you will know it is working.

All sorted now at last, i used Steve B's solution & it worked a treat. I had to hold them in place 1 at a time with a small G clamp then tied them up to keep it in place, what a PITA it was
It wasnt turning over due to one of the bushes falling out of it's seating position so i had to take the top off AGAIN & re-sit it in place, but this time i made sure it was moving freely before i fitted to car :D
I then supper glued the plug i broke, fitted starter back on car & it turned over 1st time with no squeal..... hallebloodylujah
